They probably referred to Deathstroke as Slade because that's what he was called in the 2003 cartoon for censorship reasons. I'm guessing they probably could have gotten away with using his code name today , but Slade is arguably more recognizable for those who grew up that show. Incidentally, the 2003 incarnation Slade (Deathstroke) was a legitimately intimidating antagonist voiced by Ron Perlman, and he was probably one of the best things about that show.

What they really should of done is at least say the Deathstroke name once but then have Wilson The Terminator say "but since everyone was already comparing me to Deadpool I go by Slade" since yeah they have a whole joke about saying his name that though not terribly funny does feel like a good mock at how dramatic his name was said in the 2003 series. Since yeah if they're making Deadpool jokes that felt like one to make. Like you couldn't say or really even show Death in the 2003 show but that is not the case for 2003. Certainly not the case for this movie. Hell one of the best jokes is them running over the bear singing that 80's montage song killing him and going "... I think his dad's a cop! Run!" and just taking off. So if they can make those jokes they could of at least said the name once.

culwin what are you basing this on? I think that’s exactly what it is. You can’t have a kids show with a character named Deathstroke. Just like you couldn’t have someone named Rape-stroke. Many kids shows have a ban on death, whether it happening or sometimes even mentioning it. Spider-Man the animated series had a ban on the word death and that target demo was older.

It's also just a better villain name in general. "Deathstroke" trends a little bit too close to middle school edgy territory IMO, while "Slade" is a relatively normal name that's still really intimidating in the right context and is easily exclaimed by Robin.
@BigK13372
@BigK13372 6 жыл бұрын
ToastyMozart Problem with that logic: this is the DC universe. There have been plenty of villains with names that are poor attempts at being edgy. This includes: - Bane - Deadshot - KGBeast - Killer Frost - Doomsday - Darkseid - Genocide - Vandal Savage - Captain Nazi - Black Adam - H’el - Major Force - Black Hand - Fatal Five - Nightshade - Killer Croc - Lockdown - Hush - Black Mask - A lot of post 70s Batman villains really - Doctor Death (okay nevermind even the Golden Age Batman villains have edgy names) - ETC

ToastyMozart Since they couldn't use Deathstroke, it's rather fortunate that his real name works pretty well as a replacement.

The Deathstroke/Slade thing is a relic of the original Teen Titans show which was back when yes, they felt the need to censor all use of words hinting at death on all kids shows even if they were action shows and it was extremely awkward. They apparently have lightened up if they are referencing Deadpool, but they just use Slade for familiarity/consistency.

I just assumed that since the director character was named Jade Wilson, people who knew Slade's last name was Wilson would soon guess that Slade and Jade would be either brother and sister or be the same, so Jade would be the bad guy.

From what I've seen of the Teen Titans Go series, it totally goes for the "everybody's wacky, comedically selfish, and committing shennigans sort of vibe" that's aimed toward younger kids. While I don't mind that kind of vibe, and have even embraced it at times (Hello Captain Underpants!), it just doesn't feel right for these particular characters, especially after one has seen the original animated Teen Titans show. That one is more the vibe of Batman: The Animated Series or Justice League and has a nice balance of action, drama, and humor.
@PaceBreaker
@PaceBreaker 6 жыл бұрын
Going off that, it's like Batman: The Brave and the Bold following The Batman. The previous series stumbled in its first season but found its footing and while it isn't TAS it's pretty good in its own right. Brave and the Bold came along and was more goofy (like the 60s Adam West series) and it upset a lot of fans though I'm sure the sentiments have since changed.

PaceBreaker Productions Good point (I actually preferred Brave and the Bold over The Batman). I'll admit when I first watched an episode of Teen Titans Go, I was shocked by how different the characters acted from the 2003 version so I was put off a bit. I wouldn't mind trying the series again as well as the movie, especially based off Brad and Dave's review. I may be happily surprised but we'll see. Either way I'm satisfied enough with the 2003 series but I don't have the vicious hatred for TT:Go that others do.

Lots of things in this movie are dark. And that's why it's so freakin funny. _ESPECIALLY_ the time travel bit, that sequence had me in stitches, specifically when they shove the Waynes back into that alley. I'm 31 years old and I love TTG. I pretty much missed out on the older series, so I think I was able to approach TTG from a more neutral perspective and the way it satirizes superheroes and kid's shows in general is quite effective and clever. I also love how they constantly troll their hardcore haters. That being said, I understand why people might prefer the old series and get annoyed at how frequently CN plays TTG. Still, none of that actually makes it a bad show nor does it somehow sully the quality of the original series.
@VeeArcadiaTVD

As someone who grew up with the original 2003 Teen Titans series and has a pretty neutral stance on TTG as a whole (not my thing a lot of the time, but it HAS produced quite a few good jokes that I've seen and I think the hate for it is completely silly), I thought this movie was a lot of damn fun! It produced a lot of genuine laughs from me and overall was a fun comedic take on the superhero genre as a whole. I dug it pretty nicely, would recommend a matinee for it as well, if nothing else.

That whole thing about Death Stroke being called Slade goes back to the original Teen Titans series. In that series, Slade was the main villain for Robin but the censors didn’t want to call him Death Stroke. Whether or not they couldn’t do that for this movie is beyond me but I feel like it was done on purpose as a call back to the original.
@robbywilliamson4152
@robbywilliamson4152 6 жыл бұрын
Aside from the fact that Cartoon Network never stops airing it, another reason why a lot of people hate Teen Titans Go is because they are fans of the older, higher quality Teen Titans cartoon from 2003. That show did a very good job with the team dynamic and character development, and it could be effectively humorous or serious when it needed to be. TTG has same team lineup and voice actors, and the characters are chibi-fied, one dimensional versions of their 2003 counterparts. I haven't watched enough of TTG to pass judgment on it as a whole, and the movie seem like it might be decent, but for many, it just comes off as insulting to the older cartoon.

Robby Williamson "but for many, it just comes off as insulting to the older cartoon." Probably because of the multiple (at least 5, I think) episodes where TTG responds to criticism in ways akin to trolling. "The Return of Slade" and "Finally A Lesson" come immediately to mind.

Same honestly. I strongly dislike the show (mainly because it's showrunners admitted they didn't watch the original and have been incredibly disrespectful to critics), and I had no intention of seeing this movie because of that. But I'm not of the "burn it to the ground" mindset either. Kids like it, and they have a right to.

The loathing for the show is a combination of factors; It's completely consumed Cartoon Network, it took a show that was well rounded and entertaining for the whole family and turned it into slapstick aimed firmly at children, massively reducing the audience for it when the original show was a well-loved series that never got a proper conclusion, and they've repeatedly attacked their critics on the show, which is never a good time for anyone.

None of those are the main factors for the loathing, though. The question is why people don't just not watch Cartoon Network if it's so bad. It's 2018, there are more options for entertainment than you can possibly fit into 24 hours a day. Most people I know don't even have cable.

Guy Shafor That's not entirely accurate. When Go was announced, Cartoon Network very much tried to sell it as a Teen Titans revival and used the fact that Go has the same voice cast as a selling point for the 2003 show's fanbase. They didn't even mention that it had a different title in the original announcement, if I recall correctly. That's why so many people were so angry about it. Cartoon Network openly mislead everyone in an attempt to build hype.

That's the thing. Zack Snyder clearly did read The Dark Returns. The problem is that he has ONLY read TDKR and a few other really famous comics that everyone has read or knows about. Teen Titans Go had dozens and dozens of references to super obscure characters and events that would never appear in a Snyder movie. There is no way Zack knows who Detective Chimp is, or Zatara, or Red Tornado, or Firestorm, or Animal Man. He's just read a few Frank Miller comics and therefore portrays Superman as an unrelatable, unlikeable asshole.

10:21 Ehhhhhh... I think the issue is that there was a considerably better adaptation of the Teen Titans more than a decade ago, with more or less the same cast as this one, that was more intelligent and mature. Yes, multiple adaptations and different takes on a character can exist, but when they're on the same network and use mostly the same cast, it draws some unkind comparisons.

Problem is that it seems that the fandom can't let it go, they cannot accept there's a different adaptation of Teen Titans, which it doesn't make sense since things like this has been done for a long time, they took it way to personal and blame it for the end of the 2003 show, which is false, also, and this is for my personal point of view, I don't think they even are talking about Teen Titans,, but Justice league and JL Unlimited, Teen Titans was always the funny one, even with the serious episodes, the bulk was with the jokes and the anime style they had.

I was around in 2003 and the original Teen Titans show was not some towering pop culture phenomenon that there could possibly be THIS many people who legit care.

I feel like alot of people hate Teen Titans Go! because it's not what they WANT it to be (A continuation of the more serious, darker 2000s series that was aimed at older kids, something Go! was never intended to be in the first place) as opposed to what it actually IS (A more comedic, light-hearted and all-around "cartoony" series aimed at younger kids) and I think that's pretty unfair. If you judge it on it's own merits and just don't find it entertaining/funny, that's totally fine! My gripes are with people who mainly just refuse to let the old show, as great as it was, go already.

I never was into the whole "It's for children, it doesn't have to be that good" excuse, because it implies it's okay for kid's shows and kid's films to be low quality as long as it's young kids watching it. We have shows made for kids like Adventure Time and Steven Universe and they're spectacular, with great visuals and well-developed characters, should that be dumbed down just because it's for kids? Also, I do acknowledge that TTG is not made for me, but I still don't think it's a very good kid's show. Everyone goes on about how it's made for kids, but then why is it that they don't just make up their own original villains for the Titans to fight like they do in Powerpuff Girls? And if they want to use DC villains anyway, why not use them for clever humor instead of having a bunch of generic plots like "fortune cookies control their lives" and "they enter video game parodies"?

Glad to hear it was at least decent from the way I understand it, basically since the newer show had been in decline (even with it’s young audience.) That if the movie made good box office results then they were actually going to continue the original series. honestly I loved the original growing up. I’m more worried because even if they bring it back, it’s not going to be the same tone. yeah samurai jack managed to pull it off, but that’s like asking to bring back Batman the animated series, They wouldn’t know how to handle the dramatic tone of the abusive relationship of Harley and the joker. Which is the main problem with the series, originally it had a good balance of serious and goofy shit (so much where they hinted to you wether it was gonna be a serious or goofy episode by having the theme in English for more dramatic episodes and Japanese for more comedic episodes) and when they rebooted the series the thing is that they decided to make it more comedic that dramatic because they probably thought that would be more appealing with younger audiences which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

I’m not sure if it’s actually true or not but there’s articles going around saying if this movie does well in the box office they’re going to bring the original Teen Titans cartoon back onto air. So like maybe try to see this film with a few others to see if that goal can be reached and if the articles are telling the truth.

Dare I ask, but why in the hell would there be a midnight screening of 'Teen Titans'? Isn't it essentially a kids' show? I ask this as a fan of all sorts of animated shows, shorts, and features, but 'Teen Titans' though humorous (apparently, but it doesn't suit me) wouldn't compel me to see a feature of it let alone one being screened at midnight. ;)

I'm probably the millionth person that said this in this comment section, but they never called him Death Stroke in the Teen Titan cartoons for some reason. They always called him Slade. Not sure why, I guess that's just what the people working on the show wanted to call him.

I'm not planning on seeing it if it comes on on TV or it's available on Netflix, fine. I could've sworn that the issue fans of the original series had was that the new show is a sharp 180 from the old one, falling into Cartoon Network's decision to go the Michael Bay route with cartoons - appealing to the lowest common denominator despite other kids media not treating their audience like drooling idiots who are easily distracted by moving colors and sounds, bursting into hysterics over fart jokes or something every 2 minutes. (See also new Powerpuff Girls - twerking talking Panda and twerking Blossom and Bubbles).

Just wanted to pop in and say, based on your review, I decided to let my kids see this movie in the theater (on $5 Tuesday, fortunately). My boys are 12 and under, and already like the tv show, so I figured it wouldn't bee too much of a waste of money. Thankfully it was a hit with them AND I didn't feel like poking my eyes out by the end of it! It did drag a little bit towards the middle for me, but it held the kid's attention well enough that I really can't complain. Thank you for the review!

In a way I respect the overall message of the movie to both the classic’s fans and the kids who enjoy TTGO. But still I feel insulted when these characters that I grew up with in the original are shoving their asses into the camera, making silly faces, singing baby songs and making stupid faces. I still had a few laughs from the movie, and there were two episodes that I think were alright (robin’s driving test, and the one episode where raven secretly plays with MLP when everyone else is gone. Before it’s stopped be a cute 1 time thing) Even the final fight with slade, was pretty good. And before that was a reveal twist that surprised me. (I thought jade Wilson was obviously slade’s daughter because comics and original show stuff. Clear they are conspiring, but no. It was a disguise. ) The post credits scene actually made me excited.

Its a cycle. " Every comic is someones first". That translates to media. Lets use ninja turtles. First, the comic. It was loved. it was odd. it was dark, violent, intriguing. Full of drama and twists.. Then this..fucking cartoon comes along and makes my heroes look like a fucking joke.. Ugh.. Now lets take the cartoon... Alot of creative stories, awesome characters.. Man that intro, fucking awesome. stuff childhoods are made of. Then this..grotesque movie comes out..you can see their human bits inside the mouths... It makes things so..dark.. My childhood feels violated... Fast forward to 2012, we had a good run on WB TMNT was cool, but the 2012 turtles ( IMO) was superior, and is actually the definitive series to date. And its finished, so everything is viewable. With creative idea's, unique takes on the character, making april actually more then a supprt/plotpoint/D.I.D./Annoying side character. Sure casey jones got stiffed into just being a Kevin levin clone. But eh. still a good watch. BUT YO WHEN THAT SHIT WAS ANNOUNCED ITS LIKE THE WORLD WENT ON A WITCH HUNT. "HOW DARE YOU DORKIFY DONATELLA! WHY IS MIKEY A HIPPIE?! RAPH IS TOO MEAN! THIS SHOW IS DEAD ON ARRIVAL" Now..take all that into account..some of you grew up with titans.. The comic, the show, something.. Its possible ( and highly likely) you also grew up with..batman beyond.. Now you can lie to yourself. To me. to the world.. all day every day.. That youre crying for the return of teen titans.. But youre really asking for batman beyond. Tell me im false, it wont change my claim. Teen titans was.. A joke. An anime Joke. I reccomend bennet the sage he does a review of the teen titans show ( aswell as swat kats.. I loved that show but he had valid as fuck points ) Nerds... Youre fickle. Youre blind. ( coming from me thats saying something, even with glasses i cant see 10 feetahead of me) and well.. you need to let yourself grow up. And lets face it... " It's time to grow up, there's no toys R Us kids" Like a child, you have to let your fandom grow. And yes.. it will make mistakes.. Maybe get an ugly tattoo.. But honey.. lean close and listen.. ITs a business. It will come back, did it make money? it will come back. FUCKING UNFRIENDED GOT A SEQUEL. Your thing will change. But it will also remain the same because..your thing is out there. purchasable ( or downloadable, fucking pirates ) And its untouched.. So you can grow with your fandom. Have patience when it stumbles..( according to your opinions), And look forward to when it shines again.. Or you can be a brat. A whiny brat that gives your fandom a sickly light that makes others either not want to aproach it or even achknowledge its existence.. ( im looking at you LoL players ) Man I ranted alot about this.....At.. 3 AM.. But hey.. It is what it is..

I went with some friends and their families so there were about five kids and seven adults in our big group and we all really enjoyed this movie. It had jokes for the kids and for the adults. So it's kinda perfect for all ages. Hands down, the line that made me laugh the hardest was the one at the end. I won't spoil it, but it had me and my friends laughing so hard we actually teared up. Just because of how unexpected it was. Edit: Oop nevermind. Dave said the line. I don't blame him. That is a fantastic closing line.

Nice to see a bit of impartiality from the Midnight Screenings team. TTG! gets such an unbelievable amount of hate, and while it's by no means a masterpiece, it's a genuinely funny show clearly made by people having a blast; it may be crass and broad, but there's nothing cynical about it. It also has a lot of fun taking the piss out of DC, who have been so appallingly self-serious for the past several years that I'm inclined to find any effort in that direction positively admirable.

I'm well aware of the legal trials and travails over the years, but I think Dave makes a good point, the history of the character dating back to the 30's and Fawcett Comics is named Captain Marvel, and that will never change. Since the name predates Marvel Comics I honestly have no idea how they got the rights in the end, I think DC just gave up, or they got something else in return. If you want to know more about the British side of things, look up Miracleman sometime. Those are great comics.
