The Moody Blues requires a full orchestra as their backup in concert. The five members of the band can play 35 different instruments. Meaning that in a recording studio, they can layer the effect of a full orchestra all by themselves. This is one of the most musically talented groups you will ever hear. And yes, you are listening to a masterpiece.

Before the 90s, they usually had concerts without an orchestra. And before Mike Pinder and his mellotron left in the late 70s, they used his mellotron to duplicate an orchestra in live and in studio recordings.

I saw them twice in concert in the 1980's with no orchestra and no Mike Pinder, Patrick Moraz had replaced him by then. Both concerts were awesome but Stevie Ray Vaughn opened for them the first time I saw them.

I wish they required an orchestra in concert. That's what I had hoped for when I went to see them. But, no orchestra, sadly. They were good. Just not the same though without the orchestra or the other instrument that imitates an orchestra.

Chase, I don't want to come across like some old codger (I'm 68), but you have not even scraped the surface of what incredible music lies before you. There is a t-shirt out there that says, "I may be old, but we had the best music" - and we did. It's like an alien invasion that possessed the souls of young singers and musicians and song writers, for about twenty years, to gift this planet with the most memorable music Earth has ever known. The Moody Blues; Pink Floyd; Led Zeppelin; Emerson, Lake and Palmer; The Alan Parsons Project; Supertramp; The Doors; Janis Joplin; Jimi Hendrix; Heart; The Grateful Dead; The Animals; Three Dog Night; Bachman Turner Overdrive; Eric Clapton; Procol Harem; Steely Dan; The Doobie Brothers; Dire Straits; Santana; Joe Cocker; Bob Segar; America; Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young; Rory Gallagher; Queen; Chicago (the Terry Kath years); Kansas; Uriah Heap; Joe Walsh; The Eagles; Jethro Tull; Aerosmith; The Who; The Rolling Stones; Deep Purple; Grand Funk Railroad; Journey; Talking Heads; Van Halen; RUSH; The Allman Brothers Band; Electric Light Orchestra; David Bowie; YES..... It's almost a supernatural thing that happened that suddenly so much music burst out onto the scene. You have enough music available here on KZbin alone to blow your mind and your eardrums for years to come. If you are willing, get ready for the ride of your life.

I like this list of artists you have here, saves me the trouble and time to type them all myself. LOL ♥Not sure if you missed any of my favs, or added some I never heard of. I will be 75 next month and have lots of different types of music. I would also add a bunch from the 60's. Only type of vocals that I am not a fan of is opera, the singers that sing opera is not something I like. LOL I think it hurts my ears or something, or gets on my nerves. Although if just the music/instrumentals I am sure the sound would be more pleasing.

It wasn't a choir, it was an orchestra -- a full orchestra. The entire album this song was on was orchestral. My favorite Moody Blues album, period. I think it came out in 1967. This performance was was decades later.

On the album the "orchestra" were multiple tracks of the mellotron dubbed over multiple times. The mellotron used actual recordings of instruments and would play them when a key was pressed on a keyboard. Very interesting early type of mechanical synthesizer. There were some real instruments used also when you hear solos or other orchestral instruments.

At the 4:53 mark, that instrument is a flute. At the 7:37 mark, "what kind of sound is that?" That is the classical string instruments: Violin, Cello, Bass. Cello is pronounced chello. At the 7:45 mark, that is a brass section of horns and trumpets, etc. The person waving his hands toward the orchestra is called a Conductor. He conducts (leads) the orchestra.

Great reaction son! I loved the look on your face when the orchestra kicked in. The singer Justin Haywood wrote this song shortly after joining the Moody Blues at 19 yrs old. This song was released in '67. I have a love/hate relationship with this song. I love the song because it brings back some great memories but then I hate thus song because it reminds me that I've got way more years behind me than I have in front of me. @Crownd1_ EXACTLY how I feel!! I to have way more years behind me now, and the song also brings back wonderful memories when I was a student at Kent State University. I was 20 in 1967 when this came out. My friends and I sat silently on the carpet, leaning against big cushions on the wall, with lava lamps and candles burning and listened to the ENTIRE "DAYS OF FUTURE PASSED" album when it came out, which had "Nights in White Satin" included. Not ONE of us said a single word through the entire album. It was an experience I will NEVER forget.

"Nights In White Satin" is their most famous song. Moody Blues are one of my favorite groups from the 60's-80's. Love their mix of rock with classical music. Lots of great songs such as "Go Now", "Tuesday Afternoon", "The Story In Your Eyes", "Question", "Ride My See-Saw", "I'm Just a Singer (In a Rock and Roll Band)", "Gemini Dream", "The Voice" etc. All of their music is great! Many of their records are concept albums & meant to be listened to all at once.

Yes that was a full professional orchestra, people who have made their profession and their lives all about music. (I play trombone in community bands and swing bands, Not a professional, 60 years now...started in 7th grade. Band is something you can do all your life. One year at Homecoming my University and Alumni bands put 650 musicians on the field at halftime. Hear trombones at 7:47 and again at 8:50 if you like). I loved your reaction and your literally jaw dropping response. If I could I'd give you ten likes. You can't imagine how rewarding it is to see a new generation discover this incredible music. I think this performance is from the 80s or later though Moody Blues were popular from the 60s and 70s. By the way "White Satin" is a reference to bed sheets. Since you enjoyed the flute let me throw out something that I promise will astonish you. You have never seen anything remotely like this... The band is called "Jethro Tull" and a live performance of "Thick as a Brick". Now that song actually took up both sides of a vinyl LP (45 minutes in 1972 in its full form) but they later cut it down to about 13 minutes for concerts. The lead singer has an amazing voice and he plays the guitar and the flute ...often while standing on one leg. Don't bother with what the lyrics mean, just enjoy an AMAZING visual and audio trip. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nnLXYpVoZrhsbc0 And if you'd like to see another rock/orchestral piece, you should check out the band Procul Harum perform "Whiter Shade of Pale" live in Denmark. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaWZm6x7e8poja8si=r1b4287KRyPlRV7v (The Moody Blues are part of a genre called Progressive Rock, an instrumental intensive approach to music; it requires great mastery of instruments, composing and arranging music; while you will see Tull is completely different they are also "Prog Rock")

It is frightening that a first-world teenager with an interest in music literally can have no idea what the hell an orchestra, a flute or even a trombone is (let alone tuba, euphonium or french horns!) When you see how lively his interest is, you know the education system where he is has let him and his peers down very, very badly.

"Nights In White Satin" is from the album "Days of Future Passed" (1967). The Moodies are a prog rock group big in the 1960s-70s. Days was one of the first "concept" rock albums. Days fuses rock and symphonic, so the orchestra accompaniment is on the album too. The Moodies only used an orchestra for this album as far as I know. The album follows through a typical day starting with "Dawn Is A Feeling" and ending with Nights. Another great song from the album is "Tuesday Afternoon". The album is a unique experience. Check it out. They've made a lot of other great music too.

The band collaborated with the Danish National Symphony and Choir on an arrangement of A Whiter Shade of Pale during an outdoor concert in 2006, nearly 40 years later. That rendition is jaw-dropping as well! The lead singer's voice is astounding but we sadly lost the very talented Gary Brooker recently.

Check out "Watching and Waiting" (which can make you cry) and "Gypsy" (both from an early album - "To our Children's Children's Children". THe Moody blues were ahead of their time with the use of full production orchestral backing at a time when the music industry was pumping out bands that just played drums, guitar and bass. So much sophistication from a time that wasn't. I think without Moody Blues, Queen would never have been as great as they followed in their footsteps with Bohemian Rhapsody!

If you listen to the album version of this song they use an instrument called a mellotron to give the orchestral sections more strength and depth. The mellotron was an early type of synthesizer that used recordings of live instruments that were stored on sections of tape inside the keyboard cabinet. When the musician would push a key these sections of tape would be pulled across a player capstan to "play" the selected instrument. So depending on what instruments were loaded in the cabinet they could simulate someone playing violins, cellos, whatever. Many of their performances though use live orchestras of course. The mellotron shows up on a lot of their albums in the backing instrumentation.

I got to see them in the mid 90s; probably around the time this was recorded, and they were amazing! I've been a huge fan for many years; so getting to see them was an all-time high, but I also got a seat in the first row. I was directly in front of bassist John Lodge; talk about emotional, I can not describe the way I felt during or after the event. The album version is longer; with a poem raff aloud at the end of the song. During this concert; however, the poem was read at the beginning of the show before the bands came in stage. You really need to listen to the full version

The original recording of this particular song was on their album Days Of Future Passed (1967) and was recorded with the London Festival Orchestra. This song was their biggest hit, it was from the album Days of Future Passed in 1967 which featured an orchestra doing interludes and codas and stuff as a way to demonstrate stereo sound. Starting in the 90s the Moodies sometimes hired local orchestras on their tours to give the full effect. They were an incredible live act up until a few years ago. This concert i think is from 2000. LISTEN UP!! The album is called, “Days of Future Past.” It tells a story of just one 24 hour day. It start out in the morning, lunchtime, afternoon, evening and “knight”. If you are a fan of The X-Men, do you remember they have one of the films called “X-Men: Days of Future Past”? It’s the one that introduces Evan Peters as Peter/Quicksilver. This album is where they got the name. It was groovy watching a young person experiencing real, complete music for the first time! There were no synth’s or electronics in any part of this, except the microphones. I got chills going up and down my leg and my hair watching you react to a masterpiece. This already has gone down in history as one of the best albums of all time… EVER!! Listen to the album, not the live performance. Get your drank on, lay back and let it take you. Other groups like this you may like is The Alan Parson’s Project and the grand daddy of them all, Pink Floyd. Man, Pink Floyd makes me feel stoned without taking a thing, it such a trip! They have many albums. Start of with “Dark Side of the Moon”. **You can listen to their complete albums here on KZbin. While it’s playing it has some, how do I put it… just turn down the lights and stare at the screen while you enjoy. It will make you feel like you are sinking into your chair and the f’n universe! It’s far out, man! But don’t forget to listen to the whole album of Days of Future Past. And come back at us and let us know what you think, feel. I’ll see you on the dark side of the moon…

It was a full professional orchestra. That was in 91. Nights is the climax of the album Days Of Future Past. from 67. Justin the lead singer was 19 and wrote the song in one day. The Moody Blues used a mellotron which gave them an orchestral feel. At the time the company producing the album had hired an orchestra for a different project. It fell through. Someone got the idea why not. While a risky chance they decided to go with it. Huge success. There was a single studio single release of Nights with out an orchestra. Justin's girl friend then had just left him. As a parting gift she gave him a set of white satin sheets. But you need to listen to the full album.. It is a true experience..

Back in the day the band didn't usually have an orchestra. Mike Pinder (keyboards) played a mellotron which had a very orchestral sound. As others have said, this track did feature on a concept album (Days of Future Past, 1967) with orchestral interludes and backing on the songs. The album was a journey through a day, with Nights in White Satin as the last but one piece. This performance was in 2000. Mike Pindar hadn't played with the band after 1980 or thereabouts. Ray Thomas (flute solo) and drummer Graeme Edge have since sadly passed away

Each of these groups have huge bodies of work spanning decades so it’s almost impossible to pick a best. I will recommend a song from each. I also recommend that you listen to the studio version first and go back for the live versions later. Yes, “I See All Good People” Styx, “Come Sail Away” ELO, “Turn To Stone” Kansas, “Carry On Wayward Son” Asia, “Only Time Will Tell” Jethro Tull, “Songs From The Wood” Alan Parsons Project, “Silence And I” Most of these are their most recognized songs but are also easily accessible for a new listener. Check them out if you like.

It's not a cover: The original was published on an album in the late 1960s. It's one of most phenomenal songs from the period. Every song on the album ("Days of Future Passed") is like this one. About the album: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Days_of_Future_Passed

Before the 90s, they usually had concerts without an orchestra. And before Mike Pinder and his mellotron left in the late 70s, they used his mellotron to duplicate an orchestra in live and studio recordings. In the 90s they started using local orchestras in the towns and cities they toured in as backup. This one was the World Festival Orchestra in the Royal Albert Hall, in London. But they did use the London Festival Orchestra off and on, along with Mike Pinder's mellotron in the Days of Future Passed album which this song came from- their first major album.

This is the definition of symphonic rock. You need to listen (privately) to the whole album (Days of the Future Past) straight through. It is amazing and transcends time.

If you listen to the original and this one you will hear almost a stereo effect because they are virtually the same! Justin is a musical Einstein, and the other band members are exceptional musically!

It looks like this performance is from the late 1990s. This song was originally released on their 1968 album "Days of Future Past" which was a concept album with orchestration and poetic recitings woven throughout the album with their songs. It's really amazing to listen to all the way through. Another album you might find interesting is "Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds" a musical adaptation of the H.G.Wells science fiction novel as a Rock Opera, featuring the lead singer of The Moody Blues, Justin Hayward. It's really spectacular with some incredible music and poignant narration by the late Sir Richard Burton.

This was written in the mid 60s by Justin Haywood when he was only 19 years old. This concert was, I think, in the 2000s. Justin is singing. All of their albums were what was called concept albums. Meaning based on one subject and were meant to be listened to in one sitting.

The Moody Blues released an album called Days of Future Passed. On this album, they collaborated with the London Symphony Orchestra. It's a great theme album. Each song is about a different patt of the day. The other big hit from this album is Tuesday Afternoon.

This song is from their 1967 album "Days Of Future Passed." The Moody Blues were the first rock band to record with a symphony orchestra and recorded the album with Peter Knight and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. They were also the first rock band to have an instrument called a Mellatron in the band, which had tapes and could play back sounds of other instruments. The 1967 album "Days Of Future Passed" along with the Beatles "Sargeant Peppers" and the Beach Boys "Pet Sounds" is considered one of the three most influential rock albums released.

London Festival Orchestra. I get them mixed up, too: The London Festival Orchestra (LFO) was established in the 1950s as the 'house orchestra' for Decca Records. In 1980 it was incorporated as an independent performing orchestra under Ross Pople. At least in the world of pop music, the orchestra is best known for providing accompaniment to the Moody Blues for their landmark 1967 album Days of Future Passed.

"Dats Of Future Past" is an entire album created by The Moody Blues and it was to be a mixture of rock music and classical music. The album is about an entire day. The album is wonderful to listen from start to finish. Night in White Satin was the song that made the album popular. For more information do a search for the album title.

I saw them at the Circle Star theatre in San Carlos (San Francisco Peninsula) and it was a great concert, but it was the band and on the backside (circular stage revolved ) three ladies, doing the back-up singing. They did not need an orchestra, but they are so much better with.

The live performance is more personal but the album has a message. This is the last song for night. The album takes you from birth through death, morning through day and night, through the days of the week, and the seasons as time passes. On the album there is a poem that ends "Cold hearted orb that rules the night, removes the colors from our sight, red is gray and yellow white, but we decide which is right and which is an illusion." You should also check out "Question" and "Ride My See Saw".

Yes The moody Blues sound is exactly like this. This particular performance is nearly identical to the original 1967 recording, from their first album 'Days Of Future Passed'. Released by the label DERAM, The Moody Blues were the first band on Deram's label to make an album to show off the quality of stereo music. At first Deram wanted The Moodies to make an album based on the classical composer Mendelssohn's work. The Moodies objected, and chose to use their own original music for the album. Which till this day album 'Days of Future Passed', is revered, studied, and many other bands have been influenced by their music..

I watched that whole concert on a television special, I believe it was called "Moody Blues, 20 Years Later", I think I remember it being called that because it was 20 years after their album "Days Of Future Past". The concert was incredible, it was like going back in time, they didn't miss a beat. They have lots to explore, go for it!

Nice reaction Chase to one of the original prog bands. The fact that you're willing to listen to something new is a sign of a mature mind. So you probably love a prog band called YES and a song called Roundabout off the Fragile album. Enjoy the musical journey you just began. Mine began 65 yrs ago. 🙏🎶

A great band, very successful but underated!, they never played the fame game!, they have sold around 80 million albums!, they formed in & around Birmingham England,Justin Hayward the lead singer comes from Swindon England & is still performing as a solo artist as is John Lodge the bass guitarist who in particular is carrying on with the Moody's backlog!.

It is a real shame that popular music today is quite often not made with real instruments. I think music reactions are so important for young people to keep great music alive. So our musical culture is not lost with our youth.

You need to hear the studio cut from 1967 album Days of Future Past. This here is like 40 years later. That's Ray Thomas on flute. Also, LEGEND OF A MIND, from the 1968 album In Search of The Lost Chord was composed by Ray. Only one of three groups then that had a flute in Rock music - Jethro Tull and The Marshall Tucker Band are the other two.
when you have plan B 😂
