I think he is just craving actual serious movies that don't pussyfoot around with jokes. Look at a movie like The Matrix. There's subtle humor, but it isn't used to totally uproot the movie. Like, if you want to kill someone in your movie, don't kill them and then say a joke after. Kill them and mean it.

Your point about the Turtles not being taught martial arts is a critical point I feel. My kids, myself included wanted to learn martial arts, in part, because of the Turtles. One of the core fundamentals a martial arts class teaches is respect and restraint. This was a point that Master Splinter continued to drive home throughout his teachings, because while disciplined, they were still teenagers and learning is a lifetime experience.

I personally find the fact that they learned their martial arts/Ninjitsu from Splinter, there father essentially, far more relatable and engaging because it's like a family legacy being passed down to them (like a joke, a culture, a journal, a history, etc.). Something that even when he's gone, they'll always have and can never take away from, it also just happens to be something that's really fuckin awesome. And even if you don't relate to it, the fact that Splinter is their 'found family father' makes someone who doesn't have that kind of legacy or family really want it. Especially with the way he's played in the 1990 film.

Yes it's cool that they did appeal to our generation through the music and dialogue, but it's not cool to race swap characters and change the origins of characters to be less impactful, especially because they could've created new characters to represent our generation. For example, they could've made a new young black character an intern for April. That way, you don't take away something from the past to create something new.

I was always more into the "ninja" side of TMNT, so the origin story and lore of how they became ninjas was always very important to me. I absolutely HATED that they supposedly learned it from a book in the 2014 film, so this news of them learning it from TV has really put me off. The 1990 film is still the only one that has got the balance between dark, gritty, mystical and heartfelt fun right.

I agree about that 1990 film. I've read a good amount of the original comics, seen that first live action triology, the 2003 cartoon, the 2012 cartoon, the 2007 animated movie TMNT. And I tend to appreciate the versions that have dark and gritty elements like those early comics did. I could tell this movie was going to be a comedy before I saw this review, but this video just confirms it. I'll still probably see it, but I long for a Turtles movie or even better a series in the mold of an Invincible on Amazon Prime, or a JLU on Cartoon Network back in the day. The basic is missing big time, how shredder is not the main villain beats me, the main villain kinda reminds me of Charlize Theron I’m fast and furious. Not to mention that everyone is ugly. Art style is off at times, even the music choices with that chase song, forgot the name, but had a weird intake and depressing. Another “acceptance” plot that just never quite gets it. For me the best iteration of the turtles will always be the IDW comic series(the first 100 issues) It did the absolute best job of blending the humor of the 80s cartoon with the gritty lore and storytelling of the original mirage comics. Was hoping to get more of that with this movie but since a sequel has already been green-lit maybe they will course correct in the future.

@@Z3ROMyth It definitely did take a downturn. Two words: Mutant Town. Sophie Campbell took over and ran the story into the ground. It might be about to turn around with Armageddon Game (I'm not holding my breath. The whole "Rat King wants to start something, but now back to your regularly scheduled other things" plot line has been dangled in front of everybody from the start without going anywhere), but there have been 30+ issues over multiple years of characters brooding about their circumstances as mutants stuck in a walled-off ghetto, while also having almost no action, no intrigue, and a lot less of the turtles *in their own comic* . Instead, we get lots of Jennika. Who likes her? Or more to the point: what character traits does she even have for people to latch onto in the first place? She's a walking blank slate that exists only to be a human foot soldier grunt turned into a fifth turtle. Then there's Shredder being brought back as a good guy at Splinter's expense. All without earning that return, in that way, in any way whatsoever. Splinter just abruptly decides he's tired of life and Shredder should have another shot, Shredder is suddenly a great guy because something something Zen garden dimension something something romance with a previously-pure evil fox spirit (who is also somehow pure good now. She just wanted Shredder's love. No really).

The issue with a lot of these companies that have taken inspiration from the visuals of the Spiderverse movies is that these companies fail to see why the visual style the Spiderverse movies use works. The visuals in the Spiderverse movies aren't awesome just because they look cool they're awesome because contribute to the storytelling, tone, emotional impact and the overall ways the movies are presented. However besides a few specific outliers most movies with visuals inspired by the Spiderverse movies genuinely seem like the main thing they learned from them is that a more stylized artstyle looks cool which is super unfortunate. Edit: I'm not saying this movie is like that since I haven't seen it but many movies that take inspiration from the Spiderverse movie visuals are like this.

Words cannot express how much I actually appreciate this review! I am a die-hard TMNT fan and I remember reading articles saying that Seth Rogen and the people in writing it were going to make a darker grittier movie like the first live action... Then the trailer came out... I was still going to keep an open mind on it, but kind of knowing that the movie is a comedy definitely kinda kills it. I also had to kind of chuckle when Seth Rogen set in an interview that they wanted to focus on the teenager in TMNT, but I felt they went way too young. Even the live action they didn't feel like adults, they were 17 to 18-year-old turtles. It made sense that they felt young, but adult-ish. Was really hoping that this movie would still be solid, think it might just need to wait. The only real upsetting part is that if it flops, Nickelodeon is probably going to take it as "oh no one wants the Ninja Turtles" vs the reality

@LAGator-qu7tc
@LAGator-qu7tc Жыл бұрын
I always seen it as bond that goes beyond human and animal. Splinter's love for his owner was beyond anything and you could say his owner placed marital arts related things to make his environment mimic his masters. With the ooze being so close to him I say he gained some form of radiation from taking in the turtles without actually touching it since he was there for their birth. That's just me trying to make it work

Naaa it wasn’t Awesome and I’m surprised I found myself sayin that . Cuz ima HUGE TMNT fan… from the O.G trilogy. And the 2012 reboot. Rise of TMNT is trash. The Series before the 2012 version was mid.. This movie fits along that. SuperFly was cool and they way the intro all those other mutants were cool. But the turtles had no personality they just seem like kids running around who just automatically became good at Martial Arts. And Splinter origin story was something out of Oliver an company. A normal rat roaming the streets 🤦🏾‍♂️

Being a nerd, I relate most to Donnie, but Raph is my favorite turtle. My family didn't watch a lot of TV when I was a kid, so I didn't really get into TMNT until college when I started reading the IDW series and watching the 2012 show, both of which are fantastic. It's been a while since I read the comics, but I've recently been rewatching the show, and it still holds up.

The 20th Century Fox segment just killed me! Also, I find it funny how the closest and most faithful movie adaptations was the 1990 film as it combines both the 80s cartoon and the earlier IDW comic series. As for everything else, it's a tie between the 2003 and 2012 cartoon series.

OMG his depression arc is just stunning writing. And acting. The way he screeches "I did. The best. I COULD! There was NOTHING MORE, _I COULD HAVE DONE!"_ it's like Leo, baby, HONEY that's what everyone has been trying to tell you! So seeing him finally realize that and get closure on something he didn't even need is just gut wrenching. I'm more mixed on his attitude in the 07 movie, because it just didn't FEEL like Leo, but I kinda get it at the same time. After being away for so long, he felt pretty desperate to slide back into that leadership role, but things change over time, and he needed to see that too. It's why his fight with Raph is actually one of the better ones cause at least there the reasoning makes sense. Kinda.

@@TheRibottoStudios Yeah, I like the way it's written. I feel it's compelling to see the hero going through depression. That being said, I didn't like it because it didn't feel like Leo and abandoning his brothers always rubbed me the wrong way. That fight with Raph is amazing btw!

I think with this movie it was definitely trying to be its own thing in so many ways. Its remixing the old ninja turtles for a modern generation of kids and teenagers and adds their own ideas into the mix. The biggest being their origin story and how thry interact with the world. I think with this iteration of the group they are going to focus less on the ninja and more on the turtles themselves. Its certainly not a bad thing its just different. With the announcement of a TMNT Ronin game Im glad we are getting a world where these characters get a happy ending or living a good life.

This era will be looked back at as a Dark Ages of pop culture, an age where we stopped creating and time stood still as we rehashed and reheated the same things over and over, often weaker and by less talented people each iteration. We've done it for so long the actors brought back are now elderly and we're talking about deepfaking them to keep reusing even after death. We've got to let things go, not just endlessly consume the same tired things on repeat that are an empty shell of what they were. We'll always have the originals. It's time for culture to move forward.

This was a double thumbs up. Such an excellent use of the franchise. The whole argument of how they learned their skills and how it was lazy because, they only watched videos is addressed a few times. The most obvious was when they retrieved April’s scooter. Lets not forget all the subtle references to their natural abilities. Like the way they enter their first meeting with April. This movie was awesome fun and I’m definitely gonna watch it again.
