Hi Olivia, I love your explanation of Bourdieu’s theory of capital. I’m doing a PhD in which I use Bourdieu’s concepts. You described “capital” very eloquently. Thanks!

Hi Olivia and Nicola, I'm close to the end of my master's in social sciences. Through the last five years, I have tried several times to understand Bourdieu, but with no luck - until now! It is so much clearer now. Thank you for your time and efforts in doing this video. It is a great help - and I can see that many others benefited from it as well.

Thank you for the great explanations. It was very interesting to me that you included examples of Iranian culture and society, especially ones found in Tehran. It wasn't that accurate at times though. As someone who is from Tehran and lived there for 20 years, I can assure you that crying, especially for men, has never been valued. Under patriarchal traditions, men are supposed to be "tough" and in no way emotional.

Thank you for making this theory very accessible, but I have few comments: atrocities were committed from basically one side (because France invaded Algeria in 1830)... France killed over 8 million Algerian Citizens (from 1830 to 1962) & only 23k French soldiers died in that battle! Also, the war was from 1954 to 1962!

The amount of labor does not necessarily mean more value. You can work 12hs a day making meat (growing cows) in a vegan society. And that labor and meet has value 0. CERO. C---E---R---O nada
@OliviaKon6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the input! However this video is not about economic capital, but social/cultural capital. Taking from your example, if someone grows cows in a vegan society, the labour from doing so has more value than zero. For example, cow waste is great fertiliser which can be used to improve the growth of vegetables in this vegan community. Hope this helps :)
@un4decopas6 жыл бұрын

Hi. Thanks for your vivid explanation. Just one thing. Do not talk about a country and its people unless you are 100 percent sure, especially when you mention something which is negative. The young religious people or as you called them "moral police" in Tehran, Iran do not have any social prestige at all. Most of them are just pretending to enjoy the benefits of the power and they are hated by the majority.
@shidehkeshavarz80333 жыл бұрын
What she is trying to explain, is that these people inside their own circle follow a series of rules, ocasionally called as "signalling" in evolutionary theories, which helps individuals merge in a group, hence build a capital alongside other members of the said group. Not all the groups with social capital have an overlap, and not all are accepted by the others. A subculture only needs to be validated by its own members, no one else, and that is capital anyway.

I’m quite thankful for your thorough and detailed explanation of Bourdieu but the analogy of Iran, Tehran was far from the truth . The Basiji you described are a minority related to police and have nothing to do with the people and culture. They have their own mindset and ideology which are not accepted by the people at all.
