On Feb. 14, 2018, a gunman killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. In the aftermath, led first by students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, teenagers around the country initiated an unprecedented wave of youth activism for gun control. Teenage voices from all sides of the issue weighed in, and in the months that followed, they helped reinvigorate one of the nation's longest-raging debates.
Beginning in March 2018, NPR sought out more than 15 teenagers from nine states and Washington, D.C., to document their relationship with guns. Everyone featured in the resulting film was 17 years old in 2018.
Most of these teens were seniors in high school. As they approached their graduations, they spoke from a variety of diverse backgrounds and perspectives - from sport shooters in the Midwest to a student planning to join the military in the Southwest; from a teenager in Washington, D.C., who lost his twin brother to gun violence to a young woman in Montana who followed the example of the teens from Parkland.
What emerged was a portrait of the budding political consciousness of the next generation of American voters, and a fresh look at America's complex relationship with guns from the teenagers who have grown up with them.

Welcome to Iowa, where we enjoy one of the lowest gun crime rates in the nation. Our gun homicide rate is lower than Canada, Australia, and the UK. Yet we have no so-called "assault weapon" ban, no magazine capacity restrictions, and we are a shall issue state, which means anyone of age is entitled to a carry permit after passing a background check. We also have "stand your ground" and legalized suppressors. It's not about guns. It's about inner city gang crime (which Iowa doesn't have). Want to stop gun crime? Lower your unemployment rate, reduce poverty, and eliminate gangs.

You definitely do not have a lower gun homicide rate than the UK.
@jonvanwyk2026
@jonvanwyk2026 5 жыл бұрын
@@cardiffpicker1 Yes. We do. You have to account for the definition of "homicide" between the USA and the UK. In the USA, "gun homicide" is defined as any homicide where death was caused by a firearm as determined by the coroner. In the UK, it is only classified as a "gun homicide" if it leads to a *conviction* of a gun homicide in the court system (or any homicide for that matter). This is why the UK has a grossly underrepresented homicide rate (gun or otherwise), as unsolved homicides do not count against their tally. Apples to Oranges unless the two countries you are comparing use the same definitions and variables.

Statistically, states with more guns will have more rates of gun violence. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3828709/ I live in Iowa too and god bless that we don’t have high rates of gun violence but Iowa is the exception, not the rule. You’re right that unemployment rates, poverty, and gang violence are a contributing factor. Don’t you still think at least a little bit that we should take a hard look at our policies and maybe work a little better at background checks overall or at least mandatory minimum training with firearms before someone can get a permit? For the mandatory minimum training, I believe it’s necessary because of how easy it is in some states to let ANYONE, whether they know gun safety or not , to get a gun. That needs to change so there’s better informed gun owners overall (and should they need to, they would know how to properly handle their gun in crisis situations as part of their training for their permit). For the background check, maybe it could’ve stopped some of the mass shootings we’ve seen in the past few years. It’s possible Nikolas Cruz would’ve had the guns taken away so he wouldn’t have been able to commit the shooting. That’s just one example. Even though I personally don’t like guns and have never used them, I believe people should be allowed to have them. I’m a car enthusiast that knows one of my favorite past times is terrible for the environment. I wouldn’t want that taken away so I understand why gun advocates are up in arms. This conversation is too complex though to just say “oh well fix the schools or give people jobs and take them out of poverty”. Those are solutions but you also need to take guns into that as well. That’s something that needs to be improved upon. America can do better.

This is really interesting to me! This is exactly the kind of thinking that I don't understand. I want understand better. I don't get why people think gun control = taking away guns. Actually after talking to some folks here I kinda get it. People feel the need to have assault weapons and such. And they feel that trying to get rid of them is an infringement on their rights. I guess I don't get that. Why do we need assault weapons? Hunters don't need them. It's complete overkill for self defense. So why? Recreation? Are we really going to put children's lives at stake over that? And how is having background checks taking away guns? People who own guns tell me that gun safety is important. So isn't keeping guns out of the hands of dangerous individuals part of that? Nobody is saying you can't have guns. We just want common sense. I admit there are some who think that way (getting rid of guns) but they are in the minority and that's a unrealistic view point.
@DJ8017

Why do we need assault weapons? The term "Assault weapons" is defined by the BATFE as fully automatic weapons and they ALREADY BANNED in most states. When politicians point at the AR-15s, and mislabel them as "Assault weapons", they are talking about SEMI-Auto weapons. Banning "SEMI-auto weapons, would ban 90% of all guns on the market, yet you idiots say "Nobody is saying you can't have guns." YES YOU ARE!!!! "We just want common sense." NO!!! You don't know what common sense is, because you know NOTHING about guns!! The AR-15 is the most popular sporting rifle in America. There are over 180 Million of them in the hands of responsible American people. According to the FBI Crime statistics, nearly 4 times more people are stabbed to death than killed with rifles. (Now this is ALL rifles, not just the AR-15) www.breitbart.com/politics/2018/09/26/fbi-nearly-four-times-people-stabbed-death-killed-rifles-2017/ There are only around 250 crimes committed with all rifles per year. Most crimes are committed with knives or hands, fists, feet ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2014/crime-in-the-u.s.-2014/tables/expanded-homicide-data/expanded_homicide_data_table_8_murder_victims_by_weapon_2010-2014.xls Let me ask you something Steve... @frank franklin I have talked with a few conservatives. I know everyone is an individual and has varying opinions within a group. A lot of SJW's do attack free speech, but I don't think that the majority of liberals are SJW's. As for the 2nd amendment I don't think stricter gun laws would violate the 2nd amendment, only a total ban would which none of the Democratic leaders have called for. I'm not sure about the 4th though.
@badcat6767
@badcat6767 4 жыл бұрын
@frank franklin I am against assault weapon bans because they don't kill that many people, and far more are killed with handguns. It's just the mass shootings get more media attention than individual homicides, causing people to oppose assault rifles more than handguns. The CDC's statistic of 3 million instances of a gun used in self defense is impossibly high, because if it actually were that high the number of gun injuries would be much greater than the actual number of gun injuries. People have speculated this is because gun owners exaggerate or lie when being surveyed.

Meanwhile, kids and faculty have been getting slaughtered without opposition for thirty minutes. Police VERY rarely stop violent crimes. They take statements and make reports after the crime has been committed. You know who stops violent crimes? Responsibly armed citizens-because they are the ones present when they crime initiates. "Want to stop gun crime? Lower your unemployment rate, reduce poverty, and eliminate gangs." this from Jon Van Wyk. Yes. Also lets focus on mental health and getting professional help for people that need help. Not only for patients who are a danger to the public and family, but for people who may want to self harm. I also feel that rejuvenating the school systems in our country would go a long way to reducing gun violence of all kinds. Better education and more school programs like music, art, sports, and sciences, will lead to better jobs and happier people. We need to address the root cause of gun violence which is the person behind the weapon. This is a human problem. Not a gun problem.

Will these people be capable of identifying a situation under pressure and not making a deadly mistake? Do they care enough to risk their own skin as a third party? I know "it's complicated" "at the end of the day" NPR but let's apply some logic here. The war on drugs hasn't worked out so well and the war on terrorism must be a sham considering the illegal immigrant situation. How could I possibly assume gun control would be beneficial? Especially living in a constitutional carry border state where the crime rate keeps dropping. The only logic I see in gun prohibition (considering lessons from the past) is increasing crime, murder, suffering and empowering gangs and governments.

The FBI does a background check on the spot before the purchase proceeds. they have your face, ss#, your address, ID, your entire history. So yeah maybe learn the facts first kid. Also over 80% of gun crimes are committed with an illegal firearm AKA they got it through the black market. Also firearm related deaths have been going down since the late 80's.

Taking the tools away from law abiding citizens who would only use them to protect others is something that will only hurt us more. When you think about it, a criminal only needs a weapon to intimidate and murder, while those who protect need accurate tools to do their job. I’m a teen in the UK and from someone who has never had to have a lockdown in school because of a shooter I can’t understand how you can say guns are okay and help prevent violent attacks as the “good people” will save us. Yes, people will find a way to cause harm, but by taking away one of the means it becomes harder for people to create terror. If someone came into a school in the Uk with a knife, which I have never experienced they can’t kill 17 people in one go, they get caught before they can hurt that many people. And if someone brought a knife to concert they can’t kill 58 people and injure 413 like they did in Las Vegas. I get it’s your “second amendment right” but bloody hell open your eyes and realise that by putting in some reforms (you don’t have to ban guns, even though that would be best) to be able to prevent mass shootings... just a thought
@ReubenSahlstrom
@ReubenSahlstrom 4 жыл бұрын
@@jenniferduncan6356 First off, thank you for your input, it was presented in a respectful manner. Now, I am not sure you understand why we have a second amendment. It's not there so we can just have fun, and it is a dangerous thing to have. Freedom is dangerous. "Being nescessary to the security of a free state," is the reason. Our founding fathers wanted us to have the second amendment to protect ourselves from tyrannical government, as well as domestic threats. They understood why it was so important because they just finished tearing away from Britains unreasonable control. I am not going to argue that guns are less powerful than knifes, (because who would bring a knife to a gun fight) but I will agree that there are always those who will take advantage of their freedom and misuse it. The people who go out and commit these mass murders are purely evil. It's a heart issue, not a gun issue. I hope that your government (which operates with NO constitution) never becomes tyrannical because as you pointed out knifes ARE less effective than a gun.

Reuben Sahlstrom I’m glad you found it respectful as I genuinely want to have a conversation on guns with americans because from my point of view I don’t understand it, and, let’s be honest, probably never will. From what I have read of your constitution, I understand that your “right” is to protect yourself against British militias, and right now these militias don’t exist and I don’t see why that wouldn’t lead you to update your 2nd amendment, at least to make it harder to obtain guns or get rid of the hand guns and the semi-automatic weapons that you can buy and only allow people to buy hunting rifles. As I’m sure you’re well aware that when the 2nd amendment was written guns did not have the same capabilities as they do now. To me it just isn’t a heart issue or a people issue, IT IS A GUN ISSUE because the over arching thing here is guns, they aren’t peace keeping machines they weapons of war used to take lives not save them, that is the whole essence of a gun. I would also like say that we don’t have a written constitution but in a way we have an unwritten one and the Magna Carta as well. I also could never see Britain become tyrannical as we have one of the best democracies in the world (yes we have a fair share of crap leaders) but I will give Britain this in times of crisis like right now the government is helping business and people to get through giving money to them to try and stop them closing so when we get through the coronavirus we have jobs unlike your ‘democracy’ which is seeing some of the highest rates of unemployment in modern times... you don’t see Boris telling people to inject themselves with bleach ...

Bad parenting is part of the issues as well how many American children are raised by single parents who can't care for them because they are too busy attempting too support themselves and the child. How many children have both parents but neither are around to check on the mental well being of that child. Study history, there's a valid reason why We The People MUST own firearms, it's our civic duty to maintain a check on our govt. “I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery.” - Thomas Jefferson, letter to James Madison, January 30, 1787 “The laws that forbid the carrying of arms are laws of such a nature. They disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes…. Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man.” - Thomas Jefferson, Commonplace Book (quoting 18th century criminologist Cesare Beccaria), 1774-1776 “The Constitution of most of our states (and of the United States) assert that all power is inherent in the people; that they may exercise it by themselves; that it is their right and duty to be at all times armed.” - Thomas Jefferson, letter to to John Cartwright, 5 June 1824 “They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.” - Benjamin Franklin, Historical Review of Pennsylvania, 1759 “To disarm the people…[i]s the most effectual way to enslave them.” - George Mason, referencing advice given to the British Parliament by Pennsylvania governor Sir William Keith, The Debates in the Several State Conventions on the Adooption of the Federal Constitution, June 14, 1788 “Before a standing army can rule, the people must be disarmed, as they are in almost every country in Europe. The supreme power in America cannot enforce unjust laws by the sword; because the whole body of the people are armed, and constitute a force superior to any band of regular troops.” - Noah Webster, An Examination of the Leading Principles of the Federal Constitution, October 10, 1787

She sees me buy ammunition and shooting material all the time we head to Wal-Mart or my favorite local gun store, but to date, she has not seen my gun, held my gun, or even know where my gun is stored, since she is a minor. Now she likes to watch videos of guys open carrying and interacting with police. She likes to get mad at the officers who arrest law-abiding (albeit a bit cringy) citizens because she recognizes that gun-ownership and displays of such are not wrong nor evil. She'll even call me down and ask me to watch pro-2nd amendment videos with her. She recognizes that guns are tools, and like any other tool, they can be abused by those who seek to do evil. I even think she's inclined to purchase her own when she becomes of age in our state (California), so hopefully, I'll be there with her. All it takes is to show them why their position is wrong, based on facts. I think this generation is more receptive to arguments based on logic and reasoning than my own cohort. Someone in the comments before mine said that teenagers can't be trusted to eat Tide Pods. Sorry to break it to you, but more adults have died eating Tide Pods than teenagers. If you want your sister to be safe, show her the gun. Teach her how it works. Teacher how to handle it safely. Teach her about the law. Teach her to defend herself and the family. Make sure she knows how to be a responsible gun owner, then when she turns 18, buy her one for herself so she'll be able to fight back if someone tries to turn her into a rape victim. When each of my kids turned 5 I bought them a Red Ryder BB Gun. All of the rules of gun safety apply equally to BB Guns as they do to firearms, but the stakes are much lower with a BB Gun. No one dies when they get shot with a BB Gun. They don't even penetrate walls or break the skin. I spent the next 5 years with each of them teaching them to be safe and to be expert marksmen. Then I started teaching them on firearms, which was pretty much exactly the same except louder. We added hearing protection to the activity but it was otherwise the same. Today they're adults and I'd trust either of them with my life. They are safe responsible adults because I taught them about gun safety their whole lives. If you want your family to be safe, TEACH THEM about firearms. Don't shield them from them and keep them ignorant. Ignorance is always dangerous. Don't be dangerous with your family. Be safe. Be educated. Educate them.

The will to kill is human, not machine. Not sure what I think of this video. But I know that it’s a people issue and not a gun issue, because people commit the actions and assaults. A gun can sit for hundreds of years and no nothing but rust, it takes a person to commit an evil action or assault. The only thing more laws and restrictions will do is prevent you from being on equal footing with someone with evil in their heart and a will to kill.

@Berit Bakk-Hansen It's called history genius maybe you should pay attention when you read it, and hear about it from your professors. Go watch "They Shall Not Grow Old" when you have a chance or read "Blood Done Sign My Name" those people know what hardship is. As a 24 year old at least I'm cognisant of the fact that I have had it easy compared to my ancestors. I don't have to worry about a draft, I don't have to worry about Russia bombing... Oh wait nevermind Russia wasn't abiding by the treaty they signed with us that cause America to reduce the amount of nuclear warheads we had. Now we have to make it clear to Russia we are not to be trifled with. So maybe we will have something in common with the Cold War generation, but other than that life is good even for those on the bottom rungs of the ladder it's definitely better than it was. Is it perfect? No, but the way things are nothing is going to change, and as long as the liberal echo chamber continues to refuse to simply talk and acknowledge the views of independents and conservatives then the stalemate will continue. Whether it's on the topic of guns, or the topic of healthcare, you name it. If you want to know where to start at least on the topic of guns go find someone who is a gun owner and see if you can befriend them best place to go is a local gun club (it might be an old vet that you find is a really cool person to talk to and hear stories from).

@matthewrarig6760
@matthewrarig6760 4 жыл бұрын
CAN guns be dangerous? Sure. But to suggest that owning a gun automatically implies that you are going to use it to harm someone is wrong. I support gun laws that attempt to block those with mental conditions and other issues (domestic violence charges, etc) from owning firearms. However, the right for me, as an American to own a firearm shall not be infringed. I feel much safer knowing that, if someone threatens my life, that I can adequately defend myself. In closure, should there be more restrictions to prevent those who should not have them (examples above) from owning a gun? Absolutely. But to take guns out of the law-abiding population’s hands is wrong.

Matthew Rarig - Thanks for the answer, and even though we might not agree, it's interesting to hear the other side of the argument. It's like you dug a hole you can't get out of, because now that "everyone" has a gun, you have them to protect yourself from bad people with guns. But it's like an endless cicle of guns to fight guns. I know it's an utopian thought to think no guns = no violence. Yet, as an outsider, it still looks like the shere amount of guns is the cause for dumb or sad desisions from desperate people. School-shootings, the Las Vegas shooting, tricker happy cops scared of being shot themselfs, a man finding out his wife is cheating on her and in a fit of rage does something he'll regret, drunk people making a un-thoughtthough descesion etc.. I know all above can be done without guns - yet, it's so much easier to shot than to kill with, yeah, anything else really. A tiny person could kill the biggest, meanest guy with a gun, and only a gun.

College student, I am a gun owner, and I would put my life on the line to protect my fellow students (it helps that I have friends at my college who I would never want to see hurt). Guns aren't the problem, the problem is that people have done nothing to tighten school security. Maybe that is because school shootings are a statistical anomaly compare to gang violence. But I would really appreciate that people who don't own guns or have never even tried to get involve with their local gun club, didn't talk about guns. If you want to talk about guns try becoming friends with someone like me because I'm the type of person to stand by my friends in the worst times, and it's more than just being able to fight back, it's about being able to treat wounds and save lives.

There are a multitude of reasons, but it's cute that you think you cracked the code. Yes low population density does lend itself to less crimes overall but that should be obvious since more people increases the potential for crimes to be committed it's not that difficult to understand. You need to look for a different metric because anyone who has ever looked into gun violence probably already noticed that states like California and Texas have the highest number of homicides with California beating Texas but their gun laws are borderline opposites.

Did you notice that they didn’t interview anyone from Utah? Remember all those school shootings in Utah? Yeah, me either. I wonder if it’s because they armed their teachers 14 years ago? The only ones that know who is armed is the principal and the teacher themselves so any potential mass shooter has no idea who has a gun and who doesn’t. A coward will walk away from that situation because they do not want to be shot. They either don’t teach civics anymore or most of these kids slept through it but it appears the only Civics they know of are made by Honda. They talk about changing the laws in America, they don’t even know what it takes to do that. Gun laws are made at the state level, not federal. If they want to change the Second Amendment they will only need 2/3 of Congress and 75% of the states approval. They will never get that to repeal the Second Amendment and if by some miracle they do, that will be the first day of the second Civil War. They don’t realize that the second amendment is not a restriction against the people, it is a restriction against the government from restricting firearms from people. Every gun control measure passed since 1934 is unconstitutional.

Every house in my neighborhood has a gun, but I don’t hear gunshots at night except when I’m at the range. Every person here in Arizona carries a gun or at least know somebody who carries a gun, I’m worried about getting shot, why? Because it’s a people problem!!!! Where I live in Arizona, Scottsdale to be precise is a nice planned community. We don’t have gangs killing each other, drug dealers shooting other drug dealers, people respect their community, we all watch out for each other, our neighborhoods are pretty active with neighborhood watch we all know each other, we strive to be good neighbors and provide a safe and watch for community. We have good schools, we have good roads and it’s considered a desert paradise. We probably have more guns in this state then a military base lol. But nobody is worried about getting blown away because our people here are different. The criminals know that if they mess around with an innocent person they probably won’t see anything except a muzzle flash. The point is we have the same amount if not more guns than Chicago yet we don’t have the type of violence that you guys have because we are totally different people. Which brings it to a people problem. Now obviously there are the nuances in this debate because there is a bigger Socio economic difference. We have a better education system, less crowded classrooms, more opportunity and we do have the same problems that any city does but it’s very limited. And I understand if somebody is growing up around violence and crime that’s all they really know and they are used to something like that where if somebody grows up in the suburbs and has positive reinforcement then they’re probably not going to join a gang or sell drugs in the future. You can complain about guns all day and it won’t make a difference because they are not going anywhere because they are tools made to survive multiple lifetimes but what you can try to do is change your community by working with the police, forming a neighborhood watch, not letting these gang members and drug dealers take over your streets. Maybe strive to be a better person? If things are not going just right for you maybe you shouldn’t break into a car to make a quick buck? Join the military if you don’t have a bad record, people have choices in life and the choices that we make affect the outcome of our community. It is on you to change where you live and the violence guns are only a half measure and while they do make it easier for somebody to kill the action that the individual commits is still ther it is on you to change where you live. I think many of the people in Chicago have excepted that this is now the lifestyle, bullshit make a better path for yourself and your love ones and don’t let those stupid thugs destroy your life and those around you. Like I said try working with the police instead of telling them to fuck off or hands up don’t shoot. Gather with your community to form a neighborhood watch and stand up against these pieces of shit, they only rule your neighborhood because you let them make the criminals afraid of you guys not the other way around or you your neighborhood will always be violent and you will always worry about getting shot
