The kids were respectful the moment they met them and then the mom just went out of her way to disrespect them and their privacy by going into their bags. The most mature and mutually respectful thing to do was just ask them to empty out their bags because they don’t want things such as cigarettes in their house. Respect is earned.

Taught preschool for 25 years. Two and three year olds typically *want to help and *want to do what their parents do, playing house all the time. So…teach them to care for their environment and their stuff, while it’s still fun! Make them feel confident and competent. Then they become teenagers who don’t fight about dishes and laundry because they’ve never done it their whole life and think it’s “Mom’s job”.
