I’d like to just saw my thoughts on the lyrics: One of the reasons Sting is one of my favorite songwriters is just his vocabulary and the way he forms his lyrics, he just manages to fit so many unique words in, like name another song that uses the words “lemming”, “crotch” and “rice crispies”. My own interpretation of the words is that the Synchronicity is between the father, who seems incredibly agitated, (which you can hear in the lyrics, like I said just the way he words them, you can hear his frustrations with everything) and is on the brink of snapping, which is then represented by the monster rising out of the lake. I absolutely love this song, the music is fantastic, and the words are so well written. Sting (and Andy and Stewart) are absolute geniuses.

one of my fave Police songs! ♥ Love the dark angsty lyrics
@billparrish43853 жыл бұрын
The lyric about the picket lines refers to the dad crossing a line of people on strike, on his way into the factory where he works. It's called a 'picket line' because pickets are the vertical slats in a fence (such as in a waist-high picket fence), which back in the day were used as the handles on protest signs, to lift the sign up higher and make it readable from a longer distance. A 'picket line' came to be associated with striking workers holding signs in this manner, and the act itself came to be known as 'picketing'. The lyric is packed with meaning because the dad doesn't care (about many aspects of his life, but in this case) that he just walked past the strikers (unhindered, indicating they're peaceful, not trying to stop him), who are on strike to improve their bargaining position with the company, and thus he's hurting their cause in order to help his own, in order to do a job that he in fact hates. So even in this small line, there's all this back and forth tension being described, going but not wanting to, strikers picketing but not hindering him, etc. Very full of imagery, which like the entire song, carries a deeper meaning.

Great to have you guys back for another reaction. MVR for this one goes to Walker for getting the pronunciation of Carl Jung's name "close" on the first try. This song came out when I was in high school. I believe Walker is also right that this song is in a minor key, but I'm not a musician so I can't tell you for sure. And you guys are right that "Loch" is Scottish for "Lake." If you haven't been exposed to it in school yet, go find some poetry of Robert Burns (his lyrics are used with the New Year's Eve song "Auld Lang Syne") to get a sense of how Scottish sounds different from English. IIRC Both Irish and Scottish have roots in a mixture of Old English, Pictish, and Celtic. And hopefully, next time you sit down to record a video it will be when you are still full of energy in the daytime!

They were the band in the 80's and this album Synchronicity was the height of their career. Such songs as Every Breath You Take, Synchronicity, Wrapped Around Your Finger, Tea in the Sahara, King of Pain and many others! This song is about basically IMO about the Working Class and how things were at that time along with Environmental issues.

It's a song about a 'typical' family in the daily struggle of life. I think the real meaning of this song will reveal itself more and more to you as you gain experience in life. The reality of the words is the reason daddy stares into the distance - I'm also fairly certain it's what keeps him awake at night. The creature in the lake represents whatever is out there that we have no control over that can destroy us in a heartbeat - possibly even something of our own making. Stay young as long as you can, once it's gone you will never get it back.

Great to see you 2 back. Hope this isn't just a one shot 🙂 Love the back wall too. It's looking great. For me, I don't know exactly what this song is about, cause I didn't bother to look it up, and because I like interpreting it for myself, and what I got was that Sting is pointing out the utter absurdity of a life that involves driving to work each day in a shiny metal box, trapped with all the others, stranded on the road, due to traffic and the utter insanity of working 9 to 5 five days a week, just so that you can live a life that you never get to actually live, because you spend all day stranded in this endless loop that has no exit. He seems to be saying, this is insane and no wonder dad and grandma have lost their minds. I never understood what the monster in the lake was all about, so I looked up the definition of Synchronicity: the simultaneous occurrence of events which appear significantly related but have no discernible causal connection.

Sting used both "Lake" and "Loch" to rhyme with the previous lyric each time. For instance, he used Loch to rhyme with "kick in the crotch" in the previous line, whereas the other times, he rhymed "Lake" with "so much he can take" and "makes his eyeballs ache". I've looked up several lyrics sites and their printed lyrics all match his usage. So apparently this video maker just missed the changing of the word from "Lake" to "Loch" the one time that Sting used it in the lyrics. And good call on the Loch Ness Monster.

A picket line is a form of protest by people who are protesting against something, oftentimes employees striking against an employer, other times, a store or company or perhaps some sort of political or environmental, cause. The people will generally walk around with "picket signs" that have slogans written on them, like "This employer unfair" or "Save our planet", etc, trying to discourage others from crossing the "picket line" of people that are protesting, to keep them from going into the workplace or store, or make others generally aware of their cause.

I keep reading every artist under the sun being "under rated", yet they all made a great living, doing what they enjoy. Every musician in the Police could move right into other bands and not bat an eyelash in the process. Every album the Police created has several HITS and/or amazing songs. On a personal level, I find Sting to be a blowhard. On a professional level I think his voice is the chameleon voice of the late 70's and most of the 80's (he could step in and lead sing for Pink Floyd and the very next day being the lead singer for Air Supply). His solo work on "The Thomas Crowne Affair" soundtrack is absolutely sublime... Good to have you two back... I know everybody under the sun has done a reaction to this song I am about to mention. Hi, well you've had a great introduction to a typical working class British family lol. Actually its rather a grim look at life in grimy working class areas of England, which is the home of Sting. As for the word 'pickets,' he's referring to the strikers holding their pickets in the air, the protest signs essentially. If you're a denizen of the American suburbs you'll be familiar with the famous white picket fence, a similar idea, with the vertical wooden sticks. And, as others have pointed out, loch is the Scottish word for lake. However, there is actually *one* lake in Scotland, named as such, the Lake of Menteith.
