No need to apologize for enjoying a great song. The lyrics do describe a suburban dystopia, but the delivery is excellent. As a side note, when Queensryche released an album of all cover songs with great messages, in 2007, this was one of the songs they covered.

You did not need to apologize for smiling! The reaction was great and I'm just happy you picked The Police to react to! The album Synchronicity was album of the year and the title reflects the diverse music on this album, from love ballads to hard rock. The biggest hit was EVERY BREATH YOU TAKE. I'm sure you will recognize that song if you decide to react to it. Thanks so much for this reaction. It was great. Keep smiling👍🙂

Part of the brilliance of this song is how melodic and catchy it is while describing a very bleak and hopeless situation in the lyrics. This is an amazing band with a lot of diverse songs, "Message in a Bottle", "Invisible Sun", "So Lonely", "Demolition Man", etc. are all amazing songs that are a great place to start with this band. Great reaction as always and don't feel bad for smiling during the dark lyrics, most people probably do that the first time they hear this song because it's so catchy.

A couple of trivia facts. The drummers name is Stewart Copeland. He’s considered one of the top 100 drummers of all time. His two brothers worked as booking agents et cetera for the band. Your editor's note just shows how sweet of a person you are. This is my favorite Police song, but they have other great ones for sure. Like you said, that chromaticism going up is very catchy, and then later how it goes down. I also like the courage to put a song out there that essentially doesn't have a chorus, because you're always risking that people won't feel like singing along with it, but it works very well this way in it being sort of a social commentary.

The Police were formed in England by Stewart Copeland (drums) and Sting (vocals & bass)... Andy Summers (guitar) completed the line-up and they debuted in 1978... By the early 80's, The Police were a major pop rock band w/ a sound of their own... Unfortunately, The Police were short-lived and broke up by 1986 after a few albums... They are best known for the massive hit single 'Every breath you take'... Sting (real name Gordon Sumner) has a unique voice and launched a massively successful solo career in the 80's and beyond... Some of Sting's biggest solo hits - 'If I ever lose my faith in you' ... 'Englishman in New York' ... 'Russians' ... 'Desert rose'... More Police tracks - 'Every little thing she does is magic' ... 'Wrapped around your finger'.... 'Invisible Sun' ... 'Roxanne' ... 'Message in a bottle'...

Your first reaction to The Police? OMG there is a HUGE rabbit hole for you to travel down with them and Sting. So many suggestions: "Message in a Bottle" "Bring on the Night" "Everything She Does is Magic" "Roxanne" And that is just scratching the surface of just The Police. All the "Reggatta De Blanc" album. As far as Sting himself, His first solo album "Bring on the Night" is fantastic and a great start. "Dream of the Blue Tutles" Album, "Nothing Like the Sun" Album. Oh another great starting point there is documentary that goes with his first solo album, also titled "Bring on the Night" and you get a lot of behind the scenes before their first concert and some of his process. I always wanted to see someone with a music background react to that documentary.

This is one of my favorite songs by The Police. The juxtaposition of the ultimate suburban dystopia nightmare with the Loch Ness monster has always kinda tickled me. Around the time this song came out, Sting was not only doing some touring with the band, but was also acting in the first film version of Frank Herbert's Dune as Feyd Rautha. You can tell by the hairstyle Sting has...in Dune, it's only slightly darker than in this video. The weird thing that Andy Summers seems to be playing that looks like an large fish's bones is actually a guitar called a Gittler Guitar, that is made of titanium, has small individual pick-ups for amplification, can easily be configured for a right or left-handed player, and has no fretboard. All one does is press a string down between the separate titanium frets. However, it does come with a removable clear plastic sleeve to fit on the back to help the player's fret hand positions. While The Police was a British band...only Sting and Andy Summers were from the UK. Stewart Copeland, one of the greatest percusionists ever, was American. There are many Sting songs that you can cover that are superb: - Solo: Fragile, Fortress Around Your Heart, If You Love Someone (Set Them Free), Russians, Gueca Song (They Dance Alone), If I Ever Lose My Faith In You, Fields of Gold, An Englishman In New York, and Moon Over Bourbon Street. - The Police: Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, Every Breath You Take, Roxanne, Spirits In the Material World, Don't Stand So Close To Me, "De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da" (yeah...that's the title), King Of Pain, Wrapped Around Your Finger, and Message In A Bottle.

I love how the guitar rarely plays full chords. Several are arpeggiated or outlined, but in many sections it's only single notes forming incidental dyads with the bass. It's probably the closest 80s pop got to counterpoint.

There are a lot of Police songs that I like, including this one, but two of their better songs are "I Can't Stand Losing (You)" and "Walking On The Moon". When they were in the studio they fought about material to put on the album but you can not deny the fact that the material they were fighting about was all well written and worthy of hearing. Stuart's drumming on "Walking On The Moon" was simply amazing. As a drummer myself I still can't figure out how he used the hi-hats the way he did during that song.

The only time the Loch-Ness Monster makes an appearance in a police song! In terms of Opera, they did a song in the early days called Does Everyone Stare, in which the vocals of Sting and Stewart are separated by a brief sample of an opera singer who remains unidentified after almost 50 years! ps. As a reviewer, you never, ever, need to apologise or pander to a tiny minority of people who might have a problem with freedom of expression

I understand your point, and get that you were caught up in music I consider very good. So I never thought you were being irreverent or inappropriate. And, I have to say this is my favorite Police song. They wrote and a recorded a lot of stellar tracks, but this one just edges out the rest for me. Those opening belts like you said- they’ve always created a sense of momentum for me, like the song is pressing forward. Then the band offered their usual uniquely cool hybrid of rock, reggae, punk and pop. To top it all off, for some reason the lyrics mention a very famous Scottish legend, that has fascinated me all my life. All told it equals my top tune.

The Police/Sting and Pink Floyd is what I grew up on. Nothing to apologise about. The lyrics aren't something to worry about with this song. Lots of turmoil in the English Parliament during this period. With music Aaliyah, you'll often find that major political changes will be reflected in an artists music/art. This is why artists must have a platform and be able to earn a living from it. It is indeed paramount. To be a vocalist, to be a writer is something I can't do at all. I can make amplifiers from scratch without a schematic but that's just my way for enjoying music. Music and the politics of the day, society in it's day is something we need as a society!

2 things came to my mind, while watching: Andy Summers had been around for quite a while, when The Police formed. I.e. he played guitar on the album Sarabande from the great Jon Lord. That whole album should be a nice surprise for you to listen to. Another great voice (and a completely different style) would be the song 16tons by Tennesee Ernie Ford. In preparison of listening to that, pls look up the history of West Virginia. Today, the US State with the lowest incomes. All went down, when the coal mining ceased. The Police are a very politically and socially aggressive band and a lot of their lyrics touch on serious topics in a way designed to push people to think. Don't feel like you need to apologize, but I do appreciate your acknowledgement once you realized what they were saying. A lot of times reactors miss the meanings of the song, which is fair. How many times did I have to hear the song before I realized what it was all about? I don't know if it would be too much work for you, but it would be really cool if, when you did realize what the song was about after editing, that you did a little post-reaction commentary on the deeper aspects of the song. Like the drudgery of middle management and suburban family life juxtaposed with the approach of the Loch Ness monster.
