The Beverly Hillbillies is an American situation comedy originally broadcast for nine seasons on CBS from 1962 to 1971, starring Buddy Ebsen, Irene Ryan, Donna Douglas, and Max Baer, Jr. The series is about a poor backwoods family transplanted to Beverly Hills, California, after striking oil on their land.
A Filmways production created by writer Paul Henning, it is the first in a genre of "fish out of water" themed television shows, and was followed by other Henning-inspired country-cousin series on CBS. In 1963, Henning introduced Petticoat Junction, and in 1965 he reversed the rags to riches model for Green Acres.
The show paved the way for later culture-conflict programs such as McCloud, The Nanny, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and Doc. Panned by many entertainment critics of its time, it quickly became a huge ratings success for most of its nine-year run on CBS.
The Beverly Hillbillies ranked among the top twenty most watched programs on television for eight of its nine seasons, twice ranking as the number one series of the year, with a number of episodes that remain among the most watched television episodes of all time.

Fun Fact: The opening credit scenes where Jed discovers oil/ his family’s cabin was filmed at Franklin Canyon Reservoir…in Beverly Hills.
@nicholascasbarra239
@nicholascasbarra239 2 жыл бұрын
That's probably due to the 30 mile zone (aka the TMZ) the unions said if you film on location within a 30mi radius of a particular Hollywood intersection you pay the crew standard wages. If you film outside the radius (e.g in Texas :) ) you have to pay travel, accommodation allowances etc.

There definitely used to be one or two rabbits in the scene where Jed's shot strikes oil. He missed the clearly visible rabbit[s] in the course of striking oil. The rabbit[s] have long since been deleted.

Earl Scruggs' banjo picking on this is exactly why I learned play the instrument in the first place...the thrilling ringing tone he gets out of that old Gibson Mastertone is something to truly behold!!! It's no mystery why Earl was and continues to be a major 5 string banjo influence!

One night, my little ones asked for a bedtime story. For whatever reason, my mind kind of drew a blank and the opening theme to The Beverly Hillbillies came to mind. So I told them to "listen to a story of a man named Jed ... " They didn't know any better and kids love practically any bedtime story.

We can be grateful for television programs like this that preserve an accurate depiction of American country folk in the 1960s. Without these images, goodness knows what manner of misconceptions and outright falsehoods might take root in our minds when we think of people from that time and place.

Ye know, I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with the Beverly Hillbillies. In some ways, it portrays us hill folk as backwards and stereotyped, but in others it portrays our simple wisdom as a remedy to the ills of the modern industrial society. It’s likely the most charitable portrayal of us in media that I’ve seen, honestly. But still, seein a lot of the portrayals of my people not knowin much about the modern world around em and bein ignorant does rub me the wrong way. Now don’t get me wrong. At the end of the day, it’s a very entertainin show and I can watch for hours. I don’t get all riled up over it. This is just thinkin about things. This comments more for younger hillbillies on the internet I reckon. I spent a long long time bein real ashamed of who I was because of my schoolin and bein showed stereotypes of us in media. To y’all young mountaineers: ye ain’t gotta be ashamed of who ye are. We got a proud, thrivin hist’ry that runs back to Scotland, Ireland, Sweden, Britain, Denmark, and the Scandinavian countries. Our culture n accent is a hallmark of our ancestors and a living testament to whose who came before. Of course we all have things to learn, and some things are best discarded (homophobia, racism, etc), but our accent, values, kinship, and honor should be cherished. I beg you young uns: Don’t let our flame die out.

I'm a hillbilly and proud. Words like homophobia and racism are just words used as weapons to attack us, shame on you for repeating the attacks of our Communist enemy that seeks to eradicate us. I'm tired of the Commie hate directed toward ordinary working people. We are the backbone that built this country and made it what it is today. Mass murdering Communists are leeches and parasites who seek to steal the fruits of ordinary working peoples hard work. Hillbillies deserve total respect in this country for all hard work and sacrifices we made to build this country.

You might be right. considering that if you go back another 60 years to the turn of the century, the movies there have largely been lost to time in part or in whole. I imagine even then, before streaming services or even home video, which had its' advent during this shows' run, the Clampetts had probably never seen a movie that was 60 years old.

Reminds me of the 1960s TV Deputy Dawg cartoon. As a Londoner I had to strain my ears to listen, but it was a charming language. Another thing, the euphemism was unknown and plain talk reigned. Can't be bad. Just going off to read some Mark Twain.

Somewhere, locked away in a vault, is the complete opening with Kellogg's Corn Flakes written into the theme song. Perhaps one day, we'll be able to see it again. (Jed is pointing at a billboard ad for the cereal!)

Billy Connolly first picked up a banjo at the age of 21 because of this theme tune (just listened to him saying this on an BBC4 interview from 1977 called Desert Island Discs thats on Spotify). After a few years, he formed a small bluegrass/folk duo called the Humblebums, where he would tell occassional jokes inbetween songs, and then eventually became a full stand-up comedian. Go listen to him play banjo on their cover of Cripple Creek!

Way way back in college, we'd all come back from studying about 11 pm. By 11:30, we were all in one of my buddy's dorm rooms, cracked open some beers, did a few bong hits and watched Green Acres and The Beverly Hillbillies.
