Thanks for uploading this. I find myself using this board race game activity whenever I need to revise the quantifiers 'many' and 'much' and the difference between the adverbs and adjectives as well. The students I teach are aged 12-16 and they love the game-like aspect of it!

This game motivates the students about Comparison. There is a big challenge between the students. This method encourages the learners to assimilate very quick this grammar lesson about the comparatives.

Hello everyone. I am glad to watch these videos, which are of great help for us, teachers. I also like my students to get involved in highly dynamic game-like activities. I'd like to suggest something: In order to make this activity more challenging you can put the words' letters in disorder so that students unscramble them. For example "mslal", and students put the letters in order to form "small".
@BridgeTEFL14 жыл бұрын
@son441 I'm glad you're enjoying our videos! You do not need to stop the students in the middle of the game. You can wait until the end when they students are making full sentences from the words. You will often find that the other students will correct their teammates while playing the game. If they get one wrong, they lose a point. If only one person gets one wrong and they happen to be on the team that won the race, I would call it a tie. Thank you! BridgeTEFL

But that first line of hers - it's grammatical rubbish. Can you explain?
@jhonrivera310 Жыл бұрын
I wish I could do this in class but we teachers were told not to do this as students are not really producing much. We are supposed to promote active learning by having students talk at least 90% of the time. The other 10% is just giving instructions, explaining grammar or vocabulary. I could use this game when teaching Juniors. When teaching adults, not many of them are willing to stand up no matter how motivated you are.

Hello EFRENLIRA, The general rules are as follows: Add 'er' and 'est' to short adjectives (usually words with one syllable) or for 2-syllable adjectives ending in 'y'. All the best, BridgeTEFL

@naturremind Hello naturremind, You can use this activity in many ways. For example, in one column, you can write the present tense of verbs (ex/ eat) and in the next column, you can have your student write the past participle (ex/ eaten). For conjugation, you could write the verb 'to be' at the top of the board. In one column, you could write the subject pronouns (ex/I, you, He) and in the second column, the students would write the correct form of the verb (ex/am, are, is). BridgeTEFL

hi bridgetefl - one question - if they make a mistake do you have to stop that team and make them change their answer? Or do you correct mistakes at the end of the activity (in which case does this sometimes undermine the winning team because despite being first finished they've made errors...?) Looks great though. Thanks for the video - i'll have a go at this one.

@leonardo899 would you begrudge the little money a few bars of chocolate cost? It not only helps to demonstrate the idea of a race, especially with students of a lower level, it acts as an incentive. Anyway, don't you know it's just nice to give sometimes? And the reward's are many ;-)

Hello that activity is just great, it really works out with my students, although I have a question: when we use short adjectives for instance small we ad -er= smaller, with the long ones we add more before the adjective but how can I identify which ones are short or long or are there any exceptions? for instance: Pretty-Happy- and maybe stupid, in this last one I have heard in some movies said: more stupid and also stupider, so can you plz help?
@72daystar12 жыл бұрын
I've gotten numerous children's classes to just as enthusiastically participate in games like this for a small sticker for each member of the winning team. I handed out stickers to incentivize any action/behavior I wanted to see more of [and I took stickers for any behavior I wanted to see less of] At the end of the month or semester the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place students got a small prize. I never spent more than 6-7$ total.

This method is great. But does it work for 40 students in a small class?😢
@adryviga170710 жыл бұрын
Great when you have seven students.... a Little bit complicated with almost 40 students :(
@lichade200810 жыл бұрын
Then you improvise... You get students into teams and you give each team a piece of paper with "er" and "more" written on top. You give them 3 minutes to come up with as many "er" and "more" words as possible. The team with the most words are the winners.
@adryviga170710 жыл бұрын
Richard Smith Hi, thanks for your advice, I'll take it into account.
@jondobs6410 жыл бұрын
suggestion: You could create 4 teams of 10 - pin up A3 pieces of paper on the walls in the four corners of the room - or take students to other parts of your school where there is room. if you really have such larger classes I'd definitely ask your school to invest in two white boards positioned in each end of the classrooms

@wouter246 жыл бұрын
No wonder you came here. Your creativity in terms of coming up with your own games is horrendous. Why don't you improvise. Make 4 teams. 2 teams compete while 2 teams make sentences and then switch half way. If you don't have a passion for teaching, you shouldn't be dong it.

What if you cannot give prices to the teams because of the school agreements?. I have been struggling about it. I am teaching english to kids from 9 to 12 years old in a Montessori school. By the way, I used to work at Bridge Chile.
@BridgeTEFL6 жыл бұрын
Hi Arduinna, that’s a good point! Prizes like chocolate bars are not always appropriate, and teachers also may not want to spend their own money, either. In place of a prize you have to buy, some alternative rewards might be a homework-free weekend, a special winner’s crown or badge, or the privilege of choosing the music you listen to in class one day.

Yeah, children are slightly easier to motivate with the promise of a sticker or a points (which translate into money) to buy toys. Usually with older students, and a lot of time with my tiny students, all the motivation they need to compete hard and fast and well is bragging rights, haha. I've done lots of board races for spelling and word recognition, but never thought of good ways to use with grammar.
