@Jigaboo1234563 жыл бұрын
@@skiddybipbop6844 Kinetic energy is the energy of a mass in motion, thermal energy is a huge subject (thermodyamics) but with reference to gliders, ( to simplify): After releasing the tow, there are 3 ways to get lift : ridge lift, what is caused by a wind blowing against a steep hill or cliff face; wave lift, which is riding winds that occassionally occur many miles away and have a wave form that can lift a glider thousand of feet; finaly "thermals" which are ascending circles of rising air caused by localised areas of ground being heated by the sun more than surrounding areas, eg a newly-ploughed area of dark earth, tarmac etc. Glider pilots aren't the only fliers who use thermals--eagles, buzzards, crows, seagulls, albarosses and many other birds use them to gain height: it sure beats flapping thier wings to gain height! Whan I was gliding I was always looking for birds thermalling, ie, circling in the column of warm rising air, and I'd head for them and join the circle, and tey to hit them with my wingtip. Animal lovers, don't get triggered, it never happens, they are far better fliers than man and machine, they FEEL where the maximum lift is on the tips of their feathers, and so indicate to we humans where lift is strongest.

@@Jigaboo123456 how safe are gliders to fly or ride in? Compared to “airplanes” with engines ?
@Jigaboo1234563 жыл бұрын
@@user-nw2si7hu3u Generally, providing the glider pilot if well trained, the glider is safest. No fuel to explode or ignite either in flight, or ina forced landing, also they have a much lower landing speed than the vast majority of engined aircraft. The wise pilot (whether of a powered plane or a glider, keeps withing the limits of the aircract and the weather. With gliding this means always have enough height to spare to allow you to reach a safe landing spot.

Not a lot of comments here realise that this was a perfectly safe and stable approach in a 'ground effect' run....remember these craft have amazing glide ratios...not like a powered aircraft where if in trouble the old saying was' throw a brick out and if you stay above the brick...you're doin ok!' Really experienced pilots can do GE runs to about 40 feet at very high speed pull up, gain like 600 feet and do a short base a final..easily whilst dumping water at the same time. Brent Taylor Art It would be well above stall speed, little or no air brake, whilst utilising 'wing in ground effect' - flying low above a surface drastically increases the glide range and reduces vortex drag off wings.
@robertbarlow63595 жыл бұрын
Diving on speed from low altitude to use wing in ground effect was once demonstrated to me by an instructor, as a way of extending final glide slope if pilot dangerously drifts to far from airfield during circuit. I was caught out once, by changing wind direction and increase in wind speed, whilst conflicting with other gliders on circuit - I barely cleared the tops of trees . It's definitely not recommended practice to approach too low - unintentionally - but using wing in ground effect once got me out of that dodgy situation, in which I would have ran out of height and speed and stalled into the trees.

SPF+ max non-acidic sunscreen, long sleeved shirt & trousers preferably same kind of contemporary lightweight wicking breathable Coolmax material are also as essential as sunglasses, or you'll come back looking like the lobster after the pot and exhausted. Touchdown speed about the same as a 757 I reckon !

Amazing landing. For a minute there I thought you were going to hit the water. Nice cockpit view!

Have you considered an x wing fighter?

Back when I was a kid flying fixed wing, the trick my instructors and all the books told me was that when on final approach that you can tell where the plane will meet the ground by observing which point out in front of the plane is still, that is, not moving either up or down in relationship to some bug mark or imaginary reference that's clear in your own mind. Watching the video, and applying this technique, well, the still point indicated that the final approach was taking him into the drink. I couldn't read his airspeed, but, yes, it was possible he was intentionally diving and carrying a lot of speed. Or he just made dry land by riding the greater efficiencies of Ground Effect, and gliders with their light wing loading can float on ground effect better than anything else.

Spectacular! Is the ground effect above water same as on the runway ??

slightly better, unless it is windy

The best daredevils died in action. They were awesome. Wing suits, paragliding, rock climbing, fast cars, motorcycles, glider pilots, stunt pilots. I could name a hundred and am sure you could too. All to what purpose? You want an adrenaline rush? I was feeling a little unenergetic, and i think, i'm a senior citizen, is this normal? So i went to the DR., hey Doc, I dont much feel like kicking arse anymore. So he checked me out. Final verdict,...i was addicted to adrenaline, and over cooked the gland so it doesnt want to play right anymore. Thats life. I'd rather have 100 slow years than 70 fast, but you live and learn, and learning comes after the fact. As an old aircraft mechanic and pilot i would suggest you give that glider the best inspections each and every flight. If you keep landing at the materials threshold you will have premature wear and tear, unchecked you will someday have catastrophic failure. Then again, the best die young, not to mention the foolish as well. Safety first, and your chances of survival are good, i'm still here, worn out but here.

Question from someone that went solo a couple of times too many years ago. Just want to understand i got it right. So invoking ground effect he was able to increase speed and efficiency of the glider. This was a comp, he knew the lake would be flat, unlike a a field that may look flat at altitude but is not at ground level, he knew he could eat his altitude for speed sooner because he could increase his glide efficiency and speed when over the lake, thus skimming seconds of his comp time. Because of ground effect, safe than it looked but still scary as doing 180+ at that altitude.
@otsokivivuori77263 жыл бұрын
Mostly right. You cant increase speed in ground effect, you just lose it slower. All the increase in speed was due to the dive before he was above the lake.

I am not the pilot. I spent many hours in late 80's on flight simulators and I would do the same. Taking speed to water surface and glide to airfield. Great job, well done!

@@blobby1 you can either join a training program either private or with an airliner...go with someone you know...buy your own plane or just retake the course or an extension of it...I am not a pilot so double check

Really cool. I'm near Puumala(Finland) right now, I'd love to get some glider action this year.. I did my 1st powered light aircraft lesson in a C45 earlier this year in the UK.

You got some big ones!!!! I was cringing watching this! How long is that runway? I was expecting you to pull up and go around with all the energy. :)

Looks long because of the wide angle lens. Makes it look like you are going really fast.

Cool approach, definitely enough speed to make it! I just don't see why you forced the plane to the ground at what looks like 60 (!) kph over the approach speed (yellow triangle on the speed indicator) and did not use the airbrakes or some side-slipping to bleed of speed instead. During an ideal landing you would touch down at an airspeed even below the approach speed, after shedding some more energy during the flare. This looks more like a carrier landing to me ;). Still, nice scenery and approach!

cant touchdown with minimal speed if you want to arrive at your trailer
