उत्तराखंड देवभूमि ही नहीं बल्कि नदियों और पर्वतों की भूमि भी है। टेहरी उत्तराखंड में भागीरथी और भिलंगना नदियों के संगम पर स्थित एक छोटा सा शहर था। एक बड़े जलग्रहण क्षेत्र का निर्माण करने के लिए यह शहर पानी में डूब गया और इस तरह पुरानी टेहरी शहर एशिया की सबसे बड़ी मानव निर्मित झील टेहरी झील बन गई। टेहरी बांध के लिए जगह बनाने के लिए टेहरी शहर को खाली कर दिया गया और आबादी को नई टेहरी शहर में स्थानांतरित कर दिया गया है।
टिहरी बाँध टेहरी विकास परियोजना का एक प्राथमिक बाँध है जो उत्तराखण्ड राज्य के टिहरी जिले में स्थित है। इसे स्वामी रामतीर्थ सागर बांध भी कहते हैं |यह बाँध हिमालय की दो महत्वपूर्ण नदियों पर बना है जिनमें से एक गंगा नदी की प्रमुख सहयोगी नदी भागीरथी तथा दूसरी भीलांगना नदी है, जिनके संगम पर इसे बनाया गया है। टिहरी बाँध की ऊँचाई 261 मीटर है जो इसे विश्व का पाँचवा सबसे ऊँचा बाँध बनाती है। टिहरी बांध दुनिया का आठवाँ सबसे बड़ा बाँध है, जिसका उपयोग सिंचाई तथा बिजली पैदा करने हेतु किया जाता है।
Uttarakhand is not only the Land of Gods but also the Land of Rivers and mountains. Tehri was a small town situated on the confluence of Bhagirathi and Bhilangna Rivers in Uttarakhand. This town got submerged in the water to create a large catchment area and this way the town of Old Tehri became The Tehri Lake, Asia’s largest man made lake. The town of Tehri was evacuated to make space for the Tehri dam, and the population has been shifted to the town of New Tehri.
Tehri Dam is a primary dam of Tehri Development Project located in Tehri district of Uttarakhand state. It is also called Swami Ramtirtha Sagar Dam. This dam is built on two important rivers of the Himalayas, one of which is the main tributary of the Ganga River, the Bhagirathi River and the other is the Bhilangana River, at the confluence of which it is built. The height of Tehri Dam is 261 meters which makes it the fifth highest dam in the world. Tehri Dam is the eighth largest dam in the world, which is used for irrigation and generating electricity
