As a Korean, it's a bit of a mixed feeling to leave this comment here, but as a World of Warships player, I wish Korea had battleships during the era of battleships. It's a bit unfortunate. I'm not trying to bring up the colonial era, which the Japanese refer to as their imperial era. It's just a pure sense of regret. Honestly, isn't it natural for a man to like battleships? I dislike war, but if it's just for viewing purposes, isn't that okay?

Speaking as an American, the Japanese battleship line was a thing of beauty. The lines of their construction were amazing to behold and they rivaled the world through 1945. I do play World of Warships and love the Kongo and Hiei! I did chuckle a little at the Kirishima battling the South Dakota, they seemed to forget the arrival of the USS Washington minutes later. The conflict was sad, but there is still so much pride and national honor for the Japanese and the world to salute these magnificent ships.

For the most part I would concur with you as Majestic and Wonderful are quite apt to describe these marvels of engineering and design but...(sips tea and smiles)... The idea of large guns being "outdated" seems predominate only amongst those who've never been on the receiving end of that particular principle.

@@jonnyblayze5149 No, it wouldn't actually. There are new weapon systems, New anti-weapon systems, Not to mention numerous parts of its armament being obsolete like the hydroplane catapults. If you want an example, just look at the USS Missouri. She was made during the war but during the '80s she was modernized. I'm simply proposing a similar prospect for Yamato. Or what would she look like if she was built today. Our technology is far beyond what we had in the '40s.

Great video. I am going to have to watch all of your videos. I have a book that lists every IJN warship and has B&W photos of many but these full-color recreations are truly spectacular. The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force has ships named Ise, Kirishima and Kongō.

It is impressive how a country with relatively small economy, and which only just recently joined industrialized world, could create so formidable army, fleet and air force. With extremely fast developed own inventions which can be often counted as the best in the world. The strongest destroyers, cruisers, battleships, aircraft carriers. First in the world carrier strike force. The best torpedoes in the world, by far (faster, quieter, stronger, with much larger range than any competition). The best torpedo planes (which sank 2 British battleships in active combat at sea). The best fighter planes (Zero) of the early war period. Especially impressive considering that just a century earlier Japanese still fought with swords and bows... Excellent naval optical equipment. Custom Japanese radar installations and radio technology (Uda-Yagi antenna is the concept used everywhere today).
@tylerclayton60813 ай бұрын
The Japanese Empire’s economy was as large as the Soviet Union or France. Not close to the USA’s economy but close in size compared to the French Empire. And Japan industrialized in the late 1800’s. By the early 1900’s Japan was already a fully industrialized modern nation on par with Europe And saying Japan had all the best ships is just plain false. If their ships were so much better they wouldn’t have performed so badly against the US Navy. Because we won almost every battle we had against Japan’s imperial Navy. If their ships were so good, they wouldn’t have decisively lost most battles to us. Not saying Japan’s ships were bad, but they weren’t any better than what the US had. For example, the Iowa class battleships were just as good as the Yamato class. The wildcat fighters were just as good as the Zero. The Essex Class and Yorktown class carriers were better than Japan’s carriers
@Edi_J3 ай бұрын
@@tylerclayton6081 You're reading too many US books ;) Japanese economy in 1930 was comparable to Poland, not to France, UK or (ouch) USA. When I was writing "a century earlier" I meant a century before building the fleet, i.e. before 1920-1940. Which gives 1820-1840 - and no, Japan wasn't "industrialized" then. Japan HAD the best ships. Not much built and commissioned at the same time could even compare to Kagero, Mogami/Atago, Yamato, Shokaku, and many others. Japanese long lance torpedoes were light years ahead of what any other navy had. Zero at the beginning of the war were outclassing US planes with ease (like 10:1 kill ratio) - the problems arose in later years, simply because Japan had no pilot reserves, while US succeeded with their massive pilot training program since early 1920's. About Japanese torpedo planes something to say would've had British officers from Prince of Wales and Repulse, as well as your folks in Pearl Harbor, decimated like sitting ducks in "impossible to attack" shallow base. US Navy was losing every single battle with IJN until introducing new ships, new ammunition, radar tech (received from the Brits). Regarding Iowa vs Yamato - don't even start this old feud because it is laughable. Iowas were essentially battlecruisers, without much armor, and with artillery a generation weaker. Yes, later radar could make some difference in bad weather conditions, and Japanese anti-air was way weaker (proximity fuses made the difference as well). But just as a battleship = armor + gun power? Muahaha. No comparison. You could shoot at point blank range into that single Shinano armor plate you recovered through all day long, it doesn't change the fact that US were misled by Japanese intelligence about Yamato size and caliber of her guns and had nothing comparable in the battleship department to offer. Yes, battleships were obsolete class already when Yamato entered service, and Iowas with their speed and anti-air were much more useful to the fleet, but it does not change the fact that Japanese had bigger and stronger BBoats, period. Essex didn't exist at the beginning of the war (first ships entered service in 1943), Yorktown was much weaker than Shokaku/Zuikaku (could be comparable to Hiryu/Soryu). Make your facts straight.
yeah. that very same pride decimated/obliterated by US navy

Yet the power of Japan, which manifested itself initially in 1931, was an illusion. The battle that the Yamatos were built for, the Decisive Fleet Engagement where the outnumbered Japanese battleships with their superior guns and armor would triumph over the United States battle fleet, never happened. Instead of battleships, the decisive weapon of the Pacific War was the aircraft carrier and the submarine. The US carriers prevailed, sinking the Japanese carriers and naval air arm and most of the heavy battle fleet, while the US submarine fleet sank Japanese merchant shipping to starve the Japanese home islands of oil, rubber, food, steel, iron and every other material needed to produce and maintain a war machine. Having said that, Yamato and Musashi were works of naval engineering art unsurpassed by any other nation. Unfortunately for them, and for Japan, the Japanese battleship mafia overrode Admiral Yamamoto's desire that more fleet carriers and an enlarged naval air arm be given priority, as he had foreseen the future of naval warfare.
One thing I can say about the Japanese is that many of their ships are outright BEAUTIFUL! Nagato is still my favorite, and it really upsets me that the US nuked her instead of keeping her as a prize and a museum. I would have loved to see her in person. Takao was also a fantastic beauty. It's a shame warfare between our nations brought these to their doom, but they won't be forgotten. Not by this American.
