Hi everyone! For some reason some KZbin comments keep getting deleted. Im not sure what’s going on and for anyone who keeps commenting and sees their comment getting deleted,I’m sorry for the issue. A bit of correction in regards to Eddy Gordo, he’s actually in the arcade version as an unlock-able character (Christie M.) but with the use of the IC cards and Tekken 5 cards. I don’t own a set so it was impossible for me to show him. He is unlocked the same way you would unlock him the the home console port. Also, the arcade intro is viewable on Tekken 5’s Theater mode but it’s still in 30FPS unlike the actual arcade version, Tekken 7 also has an HD version of the PlayStation 2 intro as well.

Tekken 5.1 is the only arcade version of the original Tekken 5 I've played. I never played the arcade version of Tekken 5.0, only the PS2. Tekken 5.1 played very similarly to Tekken 5 DR only without the new moves because you can now do the quick back roll after a ground spike knock back and Law's b+1,2,1 doesn't launch anymore, but he can still do the Run Up to Drop (f+2+3) during DSS. They removed that in Tekken 5 DR. Great job making these arcade and console comparisons of old Tekken games because arcades from over a decade ago are becoming less existent in modern days.

Thank you! I will try to make more comparison videos. Tekken 5.1 can actually be downgraded back to Tekken 5.0 by a simple disc swap. These systems don’t have the disc copy protected like the ps2. The only copy protection it has is the dongle which looks very similar to a PlayStation 2 memory card. I can tell you that Tekken 5.0 is more or less harder and less balanced than 5.1. I haven’t bothered to include 5.0 as it looks exactly the same as the console version, although with the arcade features.
@XiaoGege
@XiaoGege 2 жыл бұрын
That's very interesting. I never owned an arcade machine, so I never knew about the disc swap, haha! And yeah, that's good to know. Tekken 5.1 sure does have some graphical improvements such as higher ambient occlusion. It makes shaders directed from the lighting more realistic.

The comparison between Tekken 5.1 and Tekken 5 for the PS2 is good. I've never seen Tekken 5.1 gameplay nor the arcade cabinet itself. When I saw this, I was happy cos I can finally see what Tekken 5.1 looks like. I've only played Tekken 5 for the PS2. I've noticed that the songs for the arcade and PS2 have different musical arrangements or sound resolution. Most notably at the Moonlit Wilderness, Pirate's Cove, City at Sunset, Cathedral, and the Final Stage 1. Pretty interesting...

Great video! The quality is extremely crisp especially at 4K. The differences seem really subtle for the most part, I'm not sure what resolution System 256 runs at but I do know the PS2 is either 640x448 or 512x448. They seem identical in terms of aliasing and detail. Here's a few observations: 15:42 16:16 Sun glare is hard to see or missing in 256, while PS2 shows it more clearly. 19:19 19:49 Stage lighting in Hell's Gate is stronger and more vibrant on Arcade. 27:56 The lamp in the background has a clearer glow on 256, while dialed back on PS2. 28:57 FMVs are very crisp on 256, while compressed and blurry on PS2. 30:00 Menu backgrounds are sharp and clean on 256, while blurry on PS2 (same goes for character renders) 0:15 1:33 Different font used for the "Namco Presents" text during the intro The only thing I noticed is that PS2 seems a bit stretched, it's not exactly in a 4:3 aspect like System 256. It could be because of it's weird native res but that's about it. The contrast on 256 is very low, which results in some black crushing, and PS2 is a bit washed out.

Very great observations dude! I did try my absolute best to capture these systems as accurate as possible. I had to use RGsB output for the PlayStation 2 as component video was way to bright using my PlayStation 2 slim. Both games look nearly identical but the arcade system does play a bit faster possibly due to the more overclocked CPU. I guess the extra ram is for the intro and cache as the arcade hardware is usually on 24/7. It’s an excellent port and the card system from the arcade version has been somewhat integrated successfully in the home port, using the memory cards. In terms of aspect ratio, I think the arcade version is true 4:3, the PlayStation 2 always seems to stretch out the video output.

Also, audio wise, the PlayStation 2 has a much stronger and”bassier” DAC compared to its arcade counterpart. Its very noticeable in the urban jungle stage. :)

Interesting. Nice comment. I think the PS2 version emulated would be stronger with filtering and other graphical shaders but the arcade version will require less juice to run & look better without anything tuned.

After some digging with both version of the game files, I found out the PS2 version's menu background is only around half the size compared to the arcade version. (320x220) vs (640x480) I'm guessing they probably did that to save ram/vram, as on the PS2 version, if you have the tools to dump and inspect the frame while at the mode select menu, the game actually loads 2 menu backgrounds at all times, the usual background as the top layer and also the background used for the options/character customization menu.

There's tone of information on "show more", click it. Yeah the difference in gamma is the most striking, but it's something that is easily fixed. The thing is that the picture on PS2 is slightly squished. Mine has it slightly slimmer than the arcade version. Differences in TVs. But it's there. Why? The thing that struck me the most is the audio quality. It sounds so much richer on System 256. That's what hit me the most. Super interesting stuff! Please do more!

Thank you! I was wondering when someone would also notice the audio lol! To my ears, the PlayStation 2 version has more bass added to the tracks. The arcade version however has the background sounds amplified a bit more and sounds “natural”. I do have a bunch of ps2 models and they all produce the weird, stretched out 4:3 aspect ratio compared to the arcade’s 4:3. I will do more comparison videos in the near future, stay tuned! :D

Without a doubt, the PS2 shows off a magnificent job in this title, since each character, setting and detail are almost identical to its Arcade version, and shows that the Emotion Engine, when used well, was a great processor in its time. A legendary gem that you must play! ⭐🌄🙏🔥❤

Honestly, when Tekken 5 came to the PS2; I was blown away. Namco took an arcade game and ported it pretty much arcade perfect running at a solid 60fps (sure there are missing things here and there between arcade version and the PS2. But having never seen a Tekken 5 cabinet in my life; it makes no difference to me). Plus, you're so focused on the combat that your attention is barely in the background details, lighting, and other textures. I'll pick the PS2 port over the arcade because I love pressing pause and learning and honing all the combos lol. But for the ultimate version, definitely the PS3 dark resurrection port with full 1080p, widescreen, and arcade perfect graphical support. On a side note, Namco squeezed and ported dark resurrection to the PSP!!!! That's definitely a technical marvel.

I’m pretty glad to see your opinion dude! I do agree that Namco does an excellent job porting their games from arcade hardware to home console hardware but also do note that Namco was sort of working with Sony during the late 90s up to the late 2000s. Arcade cabinets especially for a game this old are extremely hard to come by as I have also never seen one in person (go figure lol!) Tekken 5 on the PlayStation 2 is a wonderful port!
@kvin9210
@kvin9210 2 жыл бұрын
@@FIGHTERSCHOICEArcade yep that's definitely true. A lot of Namco arcade games were ported exclusively to the Sony Playstation. Especially flagship arcade titles like time crisis, Tekken, Vampire night, Ninja Assault and ridge racer (you could only find them on the PS1 and PS2). You wouldn't have found that on the Nintendo, Sega, or Microsoft consoles. It's like Namco signed an exclusive agreement with Sony in the 90s and 2000s lol
@FIGHTERSCHOICEArcade
@FIGHTERSCHOICEArcade 2 жыл бұрын
I actually wonder the same thing lol! I do know for a fact that the Namco system 11 is essentially all the best parts of Namco’s system 22 hardware but with a PlayStation prototype top board. The history between Namco and Sony is very interesting. Ninja assault was released on the SEGA Naomi and if the Dreamcast didn’t die, it would have most likely ended up on that home console. Vampire night and Soul Calibur 2 were supposed to be developed on the SEGA Naomi but were instead released on the Namco system 246 as to the developers, it was easier to port them to the PlayStation 2 as the Dreamcast was more than dead by the time those games were out.

@@FIGHTERSCHOICEArcade I always thought if Soul Caliber 2 can run on the PS2, Xbox, and GameCube; then why not the Tekken 4 and 5 games? Probably because project soul studios weren't bound to an exclusive console agreement and could make soul caliber games multiplatform. But in the 2000s, console exclusive games were part of the charm. If you wanted the full and authentic Tekken experience at home, you could only get that on a Sony console (until Tekken 5). Then Tekken 6 went multiplatform.
@FIGHTERSCHOICEArcade
@FIGHTERSCHOICEArcade 2 жыл бұрын
@Kevin Patel exactly, but I’m still wondering why SC3 is the only game in the series to be released on the PlayStation 2 despite SC1 and SC2 being multi platformed. Like you said, Sony probably made some sort of agreement with Namco, especially since Sony was a new comer to the gaming industry and needed all the help to become successful, in which they succeeded. Namco still worked with Sega with the Naomi and especially the GameCube based Triforce and XBOX based Chihiro arcade hardware. If you notice, all of these systems were based on home console hardware as PC hardware was still pretty much primitive and considered slow and expensive. It was much easier and “cheaper” to make some sort of agreement with them to make not only the hardware but to port the games easily to their platforms. Wangan Midnight which was released on the ps2 based 246 used 64MBs of RAM as the game was graphically large for its time. A hard drive would have been a much better option but flash storage (or in this case RAM) was much cheaper and faster to load stuff than the mechanical HDDs of that time. That being said as hardware on PCs became cheaper, widely available, and suitable for gaming, arcade manufacturers began moving to PCs for their hardware. The last time a popular console was used as a base for arcade hardware was the PlayStation 3 based Namco system 357/369. The PlayStation 3 was expensive and it wasn’t doing so well at first. Namco decided to remake Tekken 6 on the popular Xbox 360 hardware and port that downgraded version to the PS3, which is kinda strange. Sorry for the long write but this stuff fascinates me a lot! :D Edit: the Wii was officially the last console based arcade hardware to be used although the hardware had a limited use. The PlayStation 2 based Namco system 147/148/256 and the Naomi were still in use until the early 2010s.
