The rank system is not as exploitable as you think. Both players have to opt into "Match with anyone". You also don't get many points beating players lower than you. Also, it goes both ways. You could get matched with a Tekken King as a Garyu and get destroyed so i don't think that's a problem. I think this was added so the higher rank players can get matches as it gets lonely at the top. Plugging is more of an annoyance than an exploit. The higher you go, the harder it is to win if you don't have the skill. Eventually, you hit a wall. I do think the ranked mode needs some serious adjustments. They need add additional ranks, allow you to get demoted from green ranks and fix the point system. It's not like ranked play is new in Tekken. They've had it since Tekken 5. Its like they purposely unlearned everything they've learned over the pass 20 years.

Thank god you mentioned the inability to do infinite rematches during Quick Matches. My absolute favorite thing to do in Tekken 7 was pick up a new character, go into a quick match, and then throw myself at the same high-level opponent until I figured out the matchup. Fighting people who play rare characters is so refreshing compared to the onslaught of Victors who spam the same shit and then plug after you figure out their game.

I agree with all of it. The only thing is that the 800 and 1000 points issue isn't random. You get or lose double the points if you win or lose the third game in a row IF you only won against players of the same or 1 rank near you. for an example: Let's say I'm fujin and I lose 2 games against another fujin. The next moment I win against a kishin but this doesn't reset my lose streak as kishin is 2 rank above me. The next match I lose against a Battle ruler and now it's my third streak and I lose 800. The same applies to winning points.

I can forgive all the weird point scoring systems, but what I find unforgivable is that I can't rematch continuously. It's always the worst when you find someone who's able to challenge your skills and be someone you can learn from, just to have them whisked away back to the rank ladder when it would be advantageous for both players to continue re-matching. Definitely the worst feature by far. Give us casual rematches please.

Another thing is that it seems like when I decline a few players(wifi) my ranked filter settings get looser automatically. I set the filter to match me with players who are at most 3 ranks above me yet after declining 3 wifi players not only i got a bigger queue time, I also got a player from another continent and someone who was 8 ranks above me.
@TA-xj3xz

I can explain the reasoning. Tekken 8 is very generous in giving free points. You get a ton of points when you get promoted, but don't lose extra points when you get demoted. You also earn extra points by reaching different win-streaks. This makes it easier for players to reach higher ranks even with lower win rates, and makes demotions less punishing. To counteract this point and rank inflation, Tekken 8 makes you lose extra points when losing against a higher ranked player, while giving the winner a low amount of points. The idea is that you have to actually win against players with an equal or higher rank than you, to earn a meaningful amount of points. Therefore "earning" your promotion". It is not a standard ELO model, and it seems completely counter intuitive at first glance, but it actually makes some kind of sense.

@burni988

2:13 It does relate to win streaks in some sense but matches played against players 2 ranks or greater difference from you don't go towards the streak bonuses/penalties. But the Alisa example you gave is interesting and shows there's even more to it than just streaks alone. I'd guess it's keeping track of recent win rate of matches (only including matches played against players with +/-1 rank difference or less). But ig we still don't know for sure lol.

Yeah. I hate the ranked system in Tekken 8. I have had the same thoughts for a good while now, especially the randomness of the big loss and gain of points - super frustration. But also how you lose more points than you win (at fujin+ rank at least), but gain the same amount from the same rank and above. I don't get more points for beating a bushin or kishin which I would argue that I should. The ranked system incentivises playing lower ranked players in you want points. It's no wonder there are so many one-and-done players if they lose. Wish they would have just reused Tekken 7's ranked system with the point distribution and death matches. Worked so much better.

the most likely reason ive found for the high rank point loss is that its to siphon points out of the system as the high rank player receieves few points while the its a pretty odd one compared to t7 where points were effectively 1 to 1, but instead every player is an island in this game the double win/loss feeling random is because it only counts win/loss streak for ranks +/- 1 rank of you

As someone who got climbed to fujin In tekken 7 I can say that I found the climb to be more linear. In tekken 8 you can’t demote from warrior so warrior is essentially the beginning rank, this makes orange ranks and especially red ranks (Garyu lol) to have the biggest mix of skill levels. For me climbing out of green/yellow/orange ranks was a very humbling experience in tekken 7 In tekken 8 The climb from red to purple is huge just like the climb from purple to blue is immense. It does not help that there a few characters who may be inflating peoples ranks at the moment 😂 (victor).

Ranked is fine. They just need to do something about the plugging situation and that’s it. Everything else I see y’all complaining about is a skill issue. The amount of points you lose based on your respective rank, restrictions on who you can fight, and the absence of infinite rematches blah blah blah if you wanna be good at the game then you prepare to fight anyone/everyone that plays this game. This ranked system is SUPER forgiving, and sure, you could cheese for your rank but that doesn’t mean you’re good at the game, it’s obvious that you’re a fraud. But as far as I’m concerned, wherever you’re hard stuck at is where you belong and is a reflection of your skill. If it’s still super hard to rank up it means you’re at where you’re supposed to be. I wish you guys played T7 season 1, it was a MUCH more punishing ranked system. Now they’re handing out red ranks to basically anyone.

4:05 admittedly I am very biased on this as I luckily have enough matchup knowledge that if I'm losing it's not gonna be due to getting knowledge checked alone, ofc that can play into is as I don't know everything. So my opinion on infinite rematch is super negative at this point because I was someone who always pressed accept and it just made for never ending sessions against single players, and players singlehandedly inflating or deflating your rank. I wouldn't know when to stop if they removed ft2 but I'd be perfectly happy with ft3 if you want to increase the potential set length a little to give people more time to learn matchups. I feel like a limit on the number of matches is much better for ranked integrity and overall enjoyment of the game too for me personally as someone who would get too invested in matches especially if losing. I'd also be totally happy with infinite rematch in player match tho and that should be a thing, or at the very least it should be easier to immediately jump into a separate lobby with ur opponent if both players choose they want to continue fighting, but at that point you may as well just have it infinite ig lol.

Its crazy how badly implemented ranked battle is: People mostly does one and done, just cherrypicking they rival in case they lose, this alone makes any rank artificial. It should be FT2 mandatory. Agree with you that Tekken doesn't benefit from a FT2 but at least make It mandatory. Pluggers not losing anything or getting in to another queue. Disconnection rate not working, always shows 0% Point distribution doesnt makes sense. You can lose more points playing vs someone 3 ranks above 2024 and we have a competitive mode that looks like a party game. And they want this game to last a decade with these system... Incredible

It only becomes optimal to demote if youve already lost mutiple in a row and technically being put into the middle of the rank is where you started when you promoted the first time. To circumvent this they could take out the promotion boost entirely and make it to where if you are at the beginning of x rank at 21,999 you should be given a grace period 21,999 1 loss and 21,999 2 loss. Getting these two losses would demote you to previous rank and when you rank up it puts you at the beginning of the rank with the 2 loss grace period before being put into a demotion match.

strongly agree with the point about losing more to people high ranked. I was matched up against people around 110,000, 120,000 even one guy over 140,000. I'm at 65,000 tekken prowess. Needless to say I lost, I wasn't tiled since I fully expected to lose and actually enjoyed most of those matches and took a round or two off but I don't know why you would lose more points. It seems like it should be proportional to the percentage difference in rank so for example if I'm at 60,000 and i fight someone at 120,000 i should lose 50% of the points i would lose if i fight someone else at 60,000. Although that means the higher ranked player loses double so maybe make it a little less like 33% more points are lost/gained respectively than if you fought someone at the same tekken prowess. The other thing is I changed it to +-2 instead of 3 which helped a bit. Problem is that only takes into account color/title rank not tekken prowess so if someone is playing a new character you can still get steamrolled which would be fine if you didnt lose so much. The people I was fighting that were over 100,000 had their highest character well into red rank, some into purple rank but since they were playing a new character they had them in yellow rank. This is my first tekken other than playing at my friends place and i always beat him as roger by mashing random buttons lol Even still, I'm having an absolute blast with this game. I totally changed my mentality, I used to rage a lot at games like the guy on my pfp but I've been focusing only on increasing rank in the long term and not in the short term. I knew from the beginning I would get absolutely steamrolled. I started playing kuma since I thought he looked the coolest but I stopped because I actually saw your video on the characters that are the easiest at low rank and didn't wanna get hard carried cuz he's so busted at low ranks. Now I play steve, still only in warrior but learning the game a lot more than i did when i bought it a little under a month ago. I only play against 2 or 3 opponents on ranked before i take a break, always rematch and the majority of opponents always rematch as well. There was only one time I got pretty badly tilted so far and that's because i went back to steve after trying out nina, then lars and mainly because I played too many matches in a rows, probably around 10. At a certain point i started mashing so hard from the tilt that i just kept giving them a bunch of free counterhits lol. Other than that, it's been great. Before this I played s(mash) bros online and it was legitimately painful. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy, well maybe dave. It doesn't even use rollback. It would actually just freeze while you were playing. It would actually eat half your inputs. I know (of) a guy who constantly complains tekken is eating his inputs but thats never happened to me that I've noticed in tekken. Even though I tried to play it competitively, I firmly believe that game should be a party game as it was intended. The amount of things you can do to cheese your oppoent in smash is unreal, the amount of projectiles and knowledge checks. Tekken feels extremely fair and balanced in comparison, even as a newcomer. Smash online is the worst online experience I've had with any game and it's not even close.

It took me 4 days to reach warrior, then all of a sudden every player I encounter wins by spamming, trapping me in an infinite loop of promotion/demotion ( can't lose rank bellow Warrior) My biggest peeve is this concept of "learning" as a goal; I primarily use Feng and basically have learned how to use him every new rank I achieve --- it is infuriating to know that the moment I have to defend my rank my opponents make me feel like it was all for nothing... ...for reference Im not the greatest, but I have beaten fijin rank players without spamming or being super aggressive. I just wish I could reach Fujin rank DX

The only thing i can think of when it comes to only having best out of 3 in ranked. Is the huge imporvements to practice mode and the replay system they have implemented. I love the replay system in this game, i can fight a Lee who i dont see often, and then go to replays and literally play that match again in segments to learn the matchup, although a little limited in some ways. Then again id rather learn a match up at my own pace rather than be stressed playing a ranked game. Everything else you mentioned I completely agree. Lol

You brought up a lot of good points that I feel like aren't addressed enough by the community. Especially the promotion/demotion system and the points gains/losses inconsistencies. I have a theory that every 10 or so wins/losses you randomly get a +800/-800 punishment. So not based on win streak, demotions, etc. but just every x amount of wins/losses you get that extra bonus/punishment. One thing I'd like to add: I think matchmaking should be done based on Tekken Prowess or at least take Tekken Prowess into account. It feels awful going against someone with 50k+ higher prowess grinding their subs but because matchmaking prioritizes current rank it puts me up against them anyway.

I personally like best of 3. It's a normal set limit that mimics tournament play. It's a good medium. Not "1 and done" and not just "nah run it back". The replay system is the most robust it has ever been in any fighting game and I know for a fact people aren't using it like that yet. Instead opting to dive back in to gain more varied experience. But yeah, aside from that I pretty much agree with all your points. The ranked points systems could easily be improved. However, at the end of the day, the system is supposed to match you with people at the same skill level, and this flawed system accomplishes that. Sure, if you're picky about the details and how to game points, then it might annoy you. But if you're actually trying to improve, you will need to be able to beat everyone at your rank and compete with those that are in the rank you're trying to get into. This flawed system forces that and ensures that if you're at a rank, you kind of deserve to be there. In the blue ranks, it's rare that I see any of them lose to a purple. Purples will hardly lose to reds, etc.

How to get high rank, as encouraged by tekken's current ranked system: -lock in devil jin, dragunov, king or any knowledge check gimmicky character who's either really strong or broken -spam their most broken moves along with a few grabs and lows -enjoy getting to fujin for free, then deleting the game now that you're stuck having to learn the game versus players who are far better than you now that your gimmicks don't work. Seriously, I'm in purple ranks, thought maybe there'd be less gimmick and spam after i got outta red ranks, but nope. I'm fully willing to admit when a player just outplays me, I'm not some god or anything and this is the first tekken game I've really gotten into playing ranked on, but even if i know the spammers are just setting themselves up for failure, and even if i can counter them and often win against them cause i actually made an effort to learn the game, it's still annoying. I legit encountered a devil jin who was nearly blue rank from spamming the exact same thing with slight differences: divekick, db2, uf1, morning crow 22, 3 1 2, loop starts all over again with maybe some grabs thrown in there. start reacting, he starts up his heat and backs up to try and bait you into a heat smash, then the loop begins again. mf even got one game off me before i figured out what he was doing and 2-0'd him, but it gets tiring when the majority of my games are like this. not playing tekken, just figuring out how to punish gimmicks and spam. at least these players are usually deluded enough to think they're good so they rematch, the ones that don't are basically just exploiting for ranked points.

I love this game. I’m so glad we can say we enjoy the game, but also be a fair at what could be better about the online ranking experience. While I do feel strongly about some characters needing to be balanced, I do prefer the ranking system to be fixed first. The points aren’t very concise or considerate when taking a loss, especially when they’re like three or four ranked above you. I don’t get how I lose more points against a much higher ranked player, and I haven’t exactly fought good fighters. Mainly experienced people who have spammed and the moment I won a round, they plugged.

Something else I don't get is why they don't enforce best of 3. It's awful when your opponent completely destroys you in the first game, you figure them out and beat them in the second one, and then they leave (or worse, plug before losing). At least with the previous deathmatch system it made sense people could just decline whenever, but if you aren't going to let us do that then at least enforce the best of 3 to level the playing field.

The reason the system gives you less points against certain opponents is that it identifies you as a smurf but the other person as a genuine player of that rank. It takes your highest ranked character into account and also theirs. So if you're a high-blue player beating up on red rankers, you will get less points and they will gain more by beating you. Back in T7, high ranking smurfs in the reds and purple ranks would make it impossible for the average player to rank up, because even when playing a character they don't know, stronger players can demolish you. These changes aim to balance that by not pretending these players are equal to the others just because of their rank.

Your take on the points system I agree with, knowledge checking however boils down to your individual effort to lab. You have a replay system that enables you to take control of certain instances, so there's no excuse to be constantly match up checked if you have a resource like that at your disposal.
@notori-ice

It's true it's up to the player to devote time and effort to make the most out of learning match-ups with replays and labbing characters but it's undeniable this system is worse off in this regard. Learning match-ups isn't done with just your own research, it's also with the experience built fighting the character and actually applying that knowledge. This has always been an issue with unpopular characters you'd only fight once a year but it gets worse if you only have 2-3 matches worth of a chance to apply and adjust any strategy you could apply. Basically, yeah you got a point but it doesn't really conflict with the message here. More rematches would still be more beneficial than not in this game
@dcozero
@dcozero 10 ай бұрын
32 characters * ~100 moveset each is a LOT of labing, not to mention the game intentionally adds stupid gimmicks that only work on low ranks and are never seen again in higher ranks, that's a open decision to make the first steps as hard as possible to create a false sense of 'being better' just by knowing unimportant stuff. Its basically playing rock paper scissors but if your friend says 'mnushk' and the moon is full on a wednesday he wins unless you say 'i got you' while raising 2 AND ONLY 2 fingers. It adds nothing to the game but a sense of 'being in the loop' while new players are out. EVEN if we only consider 5 ? gimmicks per character ITS STILL 160 GIMMICKS you have to lab instead of learning actually useful stuff. Of course one has to go through this anyway, this is not an excuse for not learning the game, but its a horrible move on game design if they want people learning what matters in the end instead of going for king's death cradle for the millionth time.

I disagree. I labbed Paul, Azucena and Jack for several hours now. But it's about how your opponent plays a character because everyone has their own unique playstyle and unique cheese. Some other options are not available in practice/replay. I saw this with Kazuya. Even if you record wavedash hellsweep or waveday ff4/f4. You use your own timing and ticks, which become predictable to you subconsciously then proceed to eat it in ranked.

As much i prefer no limit of remach after thoughts i have two things to say: 1. It is to decrease waiting time for the player to find the game . As someone who sometimes played a lot of games with same player I understand they wanted to make game more attractive in that aspect especially in the higher ranks. In 7 it wasn't that long to wait but still took some time to find opponent and they aiming for customer better experience. 2. At least they compensate this with amazing replay feature. My honest opinion: you can now learn from one match when you got bodied than whole set in the past cuz you can recreate situation 1:1 without pretty much being forced to learn advanced setups for not your character.
