Exactly this. They're not doing it right to begin with. Harada and Murray talked a lot about Tekken's Fortnite future, but Fortnite's ripping off entire game genres to shove into it's own universe, for free. You can now play Among Us and Guitar Hero in Fortnite. At a 0$ cost. The very idea of "Continued support" for fighting games as a live service rings entirely hollow when we're dealing with cheaters and bad balancing on a daily basis. Either they start porting old titles with online functionality inside Tekken 8 (For free, and prepare to see people just go into Tekken 8 to play 3, Tag 1 or 5DR and ignore 8) or they keep making new sidegames inside Tekken 8. Force, Bowl, Devil Within, Death By Degrees but choose a character other than Nina/Anna, also for free. Now that'd be live service. As it is they just chopped of Devil Jin's legs, called it "Balancing", Dragunov is still out there beheading people effortlessly like an anime character and this is after eight entire years of dealing with Akuma and Goose Howard. A patch every two to three months that barely scratches the surface of the game's issues is not live service at all. They just wanna call it live service for the monetization, but they'll be damned if they actually deliver the quality and variety live service actually entails. 500$ plastic sunglasses. 180$ wheel-less skateboards. 5$ stages sold separately. As fighting game fans, we've been made to like and appreciate effort and quality. They can't monetize us like they monetize Fortnite kids who just don't know any better. And they're not gonna get Lil' Timmy from Fortnite to hop over and play some Tekken, no matter how much they dumb it down. And that's leaving out the clownshoes story and the fact that every body is exactly the same up to a point where characters are just headswaps of one another with the size sliders fiddled around with a little bit.

It actually can, and as far as I know, it works for SF6. Thing is, if you make a good game and keep it good, that's half of success. And second thing is, Live service game means LIVE service, i.e. regular patches, including balance changes. Not major, but noticable. In real live service game statement "we won't do any balance changes until next season" is not possible. In real live service game you don't need half a year to patch Azucena's WR32, and then you don't keep it overnerfed, despite it being intended as a signature move. In live service game having Dragunov in state that he is now longer than couple of weeks is not possible. You get the point. And thise regular patches is what actually keeps players' interest,since the game is always fresh. T8 is not a live service game. It's just an AAA game with DLCs that uses live-service games monetization practices.

I'd say not the current gen big fighters... but everything since the past generations. I wish it was a problem located only in a few big games. It's just that the practices got only worse in every new game, and the community becomes more permissive and changes their tolerance levels in every new generation, but those practices were already bad since long ago. And lately every single fg, even small, has at least dlc chars and stages. One good example that reveals the dynamic changes of the games and the community is how people reacted to the controversy of SFxTK way back... and the game ended up dieing early because of that (not only for that but still mostly). So a game in the ps3 gen was buried by the community for much less than what has been done today and that is being accepted by the same community. Dlc talk before the game is even out (this one the fgc became totally numbed to), smaller base rosters (with few exceptions like T8) and increasing dlc volumes, leaving important veterans for dlc (done by literally all franchises, as their devs know they can only make cash with old ideas and not only new ones), and dlc cosmetics (a pack costing more than a full game like in SF6), true microtransactions (recent feature), etc.

I don't even remember the majority of the player community asking for Heihachi DLC in the first place. Only the most hardcore of Hei fans wanted him back. That was the last straw for me. Namco is 100% holding the Tekken team hostage and always has. Just look at how they're handling their other projects. In Tekken 7 despite Harada handling the business side everyone knows he had to beg and plead for funding. He most likely had to meet a quota with the funding he had. In Tekken 8 it's obvious Namco is trying to balance their quarterly reports by letting Tekken pay the bill for the massive failure that was Blue Protocol. I agree that his apology is useless but I don't think there's anything he can do about this mess.

It's weird how both SF6 and T8 are premium games with free-to-play monetization but SF6 does have a fun core gameplay loop and infrastructure for the people who just want to play the game (good netcode, the option to go into private 1v1 lobbies after ranked matches, the Battle Hub removing the stress of ranked). T8 feels like it tried to copy a lot of what SF6 did but without ensuring there was a stable foundation there to begin with. One other thing about SF6 is that World Tour mode has each individual character integrated in a way that makes sense - so to train with M. Bison, you have to have master JP's style, training with Terry means mastering Ryu's style, etc. There are lots of games where the DLC characters just hang around the starting area and say "hey, I'm a DLC character - wanna buy me?" Tekken's story mode is structured in a way that makes this impossible, which compounds the problem that each DLC character/bundle feels tacked on.

I play sf6 as my main game, sf6 has very toxic monetization schemes, HOWEVER, there are some very nice things they do like Introduced a grindable currency called: "Drive Tickets" which allows you to buy a ton of things like avatar cosmetics, sound tracks, new stages, art, player customization, etc... There is also a thing that Capcom did that not many people actually talk about but it is a great feature for all of their customers. When they introduced the replay takeover in the last patch, they didn't lock replays in which you did not own the character out, unlike what tekken did.

Getting out of "Mixed" All Reviews is significantly harder then getting out of "Mixed" for Recent Reviews. Tekken 8 has been stuck at 70% (Mostly Positive) since the first battlepass fiasco. PhiDX is obviously spoonfed by Bamco and assosiates. He somehow defends the ides of having few big patches instead of steady incremental ones (say bi-weekly etc). Honestly, the stage not being included in the season pass may have been the final straw. Me and a few of my friends run the local tourneys using our setups, so if I wanna keep doing that I have to cough up for something I already paid for. Not many ppl talkin about broken colision system and walls on certain maps. Not mentioning buggy sidesteps. Even lili strugglin to sidestep 2/3 of the rooster bc of tracking. MishimaComplex made fantastic material about sidesteps and explained how incosistance this game is. Dragunov's df 1 and his leg follow up is a great example of it how tracking is strong in this shitty game. Steve can evade tracking moves/homing using b3/b4 on your fuckin face, Jin's 1 3 4 on wall when u blocked last hit and u cannot punish it cuz pushback. They should to start fixing basic stuff and trying to make this game more consistant than forcing people to buy fortine battlepasses and shitty maps ffs. Luckly im done with t8. Too many times i was frustrated when i somehow whiffed lili's FR 2 on Jin face when he commited d2 or changing sides on walls bc camera freakin out. Still heat smashes can evade rage arts even when u r stayin on range 0.5 XD

People can defend Harada and the tekken team all they want and they could in fact being held hostage by Bandai Namco, but the point remains as Harada deleted the apology, the stage still being DLC locked for us Deluxe and Ultimate edition buyers and the game being a nightmare to play since launch, poor netcode, awful optimization because I have a 5700x, 3060 TI, 32GB RAM DDR4 3200mhz and an 1TB M.2 SSD running all on low settings and the game still have frame drops when activating heat or being in rage, unbalanced characters, unfair moves and mechanics and also characters being a nightmare to play and bugged like Devil Jin's RA not deleting Heihachi's gray health and also timer going down if you hit the RA on Heihachi as well, since today (october 4th) 4 days have passed since the new patch came out and those game breaking bugs are still not fixed. It's just frustrating.

The apology reeked to me of Harada trying to play both sides, I've said it before but I'm now very much in the "put up or shut up" phase with this game. Harada and anyone else from Namco can apologise all they like but until they actually start to fix the game's many issues including the increasingly excessive monetisation, I'm not interested.

It's really sad to see Tekken, a franchise that I've been playing for almost 25 years, in a state like this. But unfortunately they created this state themselves. They have failed on so many levels, which just shows how incompetent they are at handling a modern game like this. The game is still healthy in terms of player base, especially now after the Heihachi release, but the question is, how long will it last? People seem to be leaving the game on a daily basis, so I'm not sure how long they can sustain this. If they don't improve things in the near future, this game won't last very long, let alone 10 years as they intended.

​@@JadeJackal4 the biggest thing that makes Street Fighter 6 different from Tekken 8 is that Street Fighter 6 is fully functional and there isn't much to keep track of. Tekken 8 has many instances of inputs dropping for no reason, moves not having proper hitboxes, or flat out not functioning collision detection. It's a game where everything is a guess, including whether or not the button you pressed will be registered properly. It's a game where some characters benefit substantially more from the universal heat mechanics than others. Now have all of that and add cheaters and pluggers to the mix. Then add bad netcode on top of all the other stuff. There's no adapting to a game that's as specific with its interactions as Tekken 8 is while it's also as dysfunctional as Tekken 8 is

I stopped playing this game months ago. I don’t like what they are doing, but I don’t really care. I bought Nina’s catsuit (sorry I know) but nothing else. I think you said it best at the end: the only thing good about this game is how it looks. I hate that Nina is simultaneously OP and easier to play in some ways. The rank nonsense and how that all works. I only made it to red ranks before I gave up. I remember playing some high ranked player and beating them. Only to be immediately hate mailed and called “a fake rank” like I was Smurfing. Sorry to them I damaged their fragile ego lol. Streeet fighter is giving me more than enough of my fighting fix at the moment anyway. That has some minor issues too but it’s still way better than Tekken.
