He made really good points about tier lists and character popularity in his interview. Just goes to show there's more to Tekken than theoretical tier lists based on how easy or how good a character's toolsets are.

セイント Adrian I feel like the discussion around the inadequacies of tier lists sort of down plays how well Rangchu played. I’m so happy that the game is balanced enough for even the Panda player to be rewarded with a win for their incredible performance 🐼

Hmm well can't agree with point 1 but the 2nd is a no Mainly since characters get changed not so often but original *insert x* character was good *update hits* then you see *insert x character* less often But it's mainly how you use said character and you're execution with then I say

Aris made a great analogy between Knee and Rangchuu - Knee found success by diversifying so much that we barely see his Bryan anymore. Rangchuu tried the same but he lost to Knee in winners but ended up victorious after going back to his main Panda in losers.

his main is known to do poorly against more than 1 character of knee's. you can also see advantage was for knee even though score was 2-1 and ranghu's panda pressure didn't work on knee which is normal (because it was going 2-2 to final round advantage knee). 1 round from ranchu was also helped by open stage. you are correct in that rangchu sticking with panda was the better decision. however in terms of diversity, knee has already shown that he can beat rangchu with more than 1 character, so it does not discredit diversity. the analogy that we barely see knee's bryan anymore is an ambiguous one, because it doesn't dare to go out and say "diversifying is less effective". So in the end, the meaning is hinted but nothing was said. If we go with the hint, knee already proved it is not true. what is true is that diversifying can be a double edged sword (possibly an input error or muscle memory), not that it is worse. And again, that analogy never actually said it was worse, because it just said we don't see bryan as much, which says nothing much. so in conclusion, the analogy didn't say anything (but *hinted* that diversifying was worse). however, we already know that knee can beat rangchu with more than 1 character and was neutralizing rangchu's panda pressure.

@victorfranca17

snair depends on the match up. And ranchu said it. Having your character seen all the time, being played by the best, will give opponents more info on strategies. It's a game where you should have multiple characters at a high level like knee. Tourneys could be more exciting by forcing pro players to pick multiple characters. Especially in losers bracket

@@BoONeo They're not pointless. They're just not the end all be all. It's more of a consideration for best characters. Matches are 70% skill, 25% matchup knowledge, and 5% tier imo. There's a reason the top tier characters are still seen as the most common tournament winners

"Don't give up on your main", it's so true. Just look at Lowhigh, because of the slight nerfs to Shaheen in season 2, he doesn't think that he's tournament viable anymore, switches to Law, didn't even master his combos, misses 80% of the DSS enders, gets his ass beaten. He prolly would have done much better if he just stuck with Shaheen.

Even more true with bears for being so different in their build (hit box and hurt box realities are very different even before considering their unique abilities). @@versaleyang I disagree. Everyone knew Rangchu was going to be there, so it would be otherwise dumb to not prepare for the bear matchup. I can assure you, pro-players at the highest level will prepare for each matchup of the players they know are attending. They were all given 1 month in advance to prepare. Also like Rangchu said, he fought both Knee & Qudans 4 times this year. So its not like they had no experience whatsoever fighting against Rangchu's panda. To say Knee & Qudans were just caught off guard by the bear matchup & just weren't prepared for it is kinda disrespectful to Ranghcu's achievement.

I like the ppl who play with low tier characters it brings more excitement to the tournament. With a lot of different & unique elements no one seen or given a chance too bc they’re so busy trying to learn & perfect OP character/common characters

This is really interesting because I think there's multiple things to both learn from and consider at all times at play here. One is that while tiers DO exist (and always will, sorry), it's important to consider that bias is very much a potential factor in them. Ideally, a good tier list should strive to weed out bias but no matter what it's always going to be a possibility. IE: characters who "aren't cool" or aren't "popular" (in the typical fashion, I have to add.) can often be misjudged by even the best players because they're just not driven to play that character often. And in some people's rush to be as ready and powerful for big events as possible, that powerlust even, sometimes a LOT can be overlooked too. I definitely agree that matchups are the most important thing, and very important matchup data can go unnoticed when people focus too much on the most immediately apparent top tier. Another thing is that Rangchu was infinitely more successful when he felt he was playing to his strengths, rather than trying to play to the "expected" strengths of a games' meta, which while not ALWAYS a deciding factor (depends on the game) is a big thing to always consider too. Finally, while all of the above is universal to all fighters, this is a great example of what makes Tekken in particular so great because while there really are definitive tiers (with, at times, some characters being a bit more stupid than they should be.) like any other fighter I've always thought Tekken's whole playstyle helped make the gap between tiers not as definitive or wide as it may be in some other games. While some characters have definite gimmicks and strengths that can't be denied, Tekken's very style offers a good margin of outplay potential that maybe some other fighters might not have as much of (relatively speaking!). It's why I always love seeing Tekken upsets, they're always so colorful and at times left field than expected. All and all, bottom line is this is a great reminder that while Tier-lists exist, they're NOT definitive and shouldn't be treated in as dogmatic a fashion as some people have a bad habit of maybe doing, especially In a game like Tekken.

I don't know about in fighting game, but in a card game I played for a while, tier list referred how often a deck was played, not how good it was, and I think fighting game should too, unless it already is and people just understood it wrong. In that sense, Panda is indeed a low tier character, but that doesn't mean she is a bad character (in both quality and function). In the video, Rangchu says "Panda is not really a low tier character", which makes me think at least his understanding of tier is how good a character is. I like the idea of tier being frequency because then the list becomes fact. There's no subjective matter in how much a character is picked, and there's no shame if your character is called low tier. I think there's a certain feel to the word "low" and makes people feel it's a bad thing. In competitive fighting game, more picks probably means that character is "good", but that doesn't mean not getting picked is a bad thing. Maybe players just haven't found a trick with that character. And not getting picked a lot means less research on the character compared to highly picked characters, which can be a big advantage. So I like to see tier being frequency, not how good they are

Man this makes me want to go back to Tekken or get good at any fighting game whatsoever. I'm barely decent at SF, pretty good at Smash and I would love to get good at either Tekken or Soul Calibur.

Hey Core-A, I'd love to see y'all do an analysis of ultimate attacks and comeback mechanics in fighting games. I've been thinking about it a lot since Smash Ultimate came out and how the community basically unanimously agreed to turn off smash meter even though I think having final smashes in competitive smash would make matches and the meta much more interesting.
