Hello everyone, I figured i’d clear up the air around what will be in Part 2 of the Tekken retrospective. People seem to assume that because it’s been over 1 ½ years since Part 1, it will cover a lot of ground. To curb a lot of enthusiasm; it doesn’t. -Part 2 will be roughly an hour long (although I might shorten it a bit as I recently rewatched it and noticed a lot of redundancies) -Part 2 will focus on a single game ; Tekken Tag Tournament - This retrospective was originally conceived as a 3-parter (and the research/structure has been mostly completed for the entire retrospective while making part 1), but I decided to do one game per part to reduce the wait (which is ironic in hindsight). -Part 2 will focus on the competitive aspect of Tekken, which started in full force with TTT1. One of the complaints I got from a now defunct website, was the lack of competitive focus. TTT1, as I discovered, is considered a golden age for competitive Tekken, and I wanted to highlight this history, which has almost completely been lost to time. If I can do it justice, I hope to receive a lot of critique about why my research was wrong, and people who want to prove me wrong by uploading old Tekken Tournaments from VHS/DVD recordings from when they were personally there. Researching it, I found competitive Tekken to be absolutely captivating, but it was such a nightmare to research that unless you were there, it’s almost impossible to put together a coherent timeline (which I managed to do). I would like to end this this by saying that it’s honestly not worth waiting for this video, and in June 2016 (after completing the script & VO) I decided to go for a career change, and became a Student again. As a result of that, unless I fail my upcoming exams, I will be moving to Japan in the start of 2018 for a year. If Part 2 is not uploaded by the start of 2018, consider this video pretty much abandoned. If I upload Part 2, consider this retrospective on indefinite hiatus. There are so many other videos I want to make, but as you can tell; I’m real slow.

will keep on waiting, your video is well informed and have lots of depth~ never say its not worth it, don't belittle your own efforts, cause even with only with this one episode alone you already cover a good deal of Tekken history (1, 2, and 3) I actually sit thru the whole 1 hr 29 mins 50 secs of it, yes it is worth it :D good luck for your exams, never give up!!

I've been looking for a proper Tekken retrospective for ages, and so far the best I'd found was Caddicarus' recap of the first three Tekken which, while fun, isn't super in-depth. This is everything I wanted and more!

I remember my little brother and I were introduced to Tekken from a red and black PlayStation interactive demo disc we got in the mail. It had like 16 beta versions of ps games, and Tekken 2 was on it. Needless to say, it was life changing. We played that demo for months, and then our cousin gave us the actual game after he bought it and didnt realize it was a fighting game. Best fighting game of all time.

Wow, amazing work! I personally hold Tekken 2 as kind of watermark, even though 3 has better graphics and gameplay, the stages and music reflected the personalities of each character the best in 2, not just in the original trilogy but the entire series. The sound effects also deserve high praise in all of the original games.

I agrtee that T2's importance tends to be understated. It had a huge impact on the Playstation. For those of us who didn't hang out at arcades, and had never seen Virtua Fighter 2, T2 was mind blowing and made all the other fighters we'd seen irelevant relics. There's no question that T3 was where the franchise was perfected and is 'the one' of the early Tekkens but it should be stressed that it benefited hugely from the popularity T2 had built up on the PS1. I think that the reason T2 gets underappreciated is that while it was a great game in its day, Tekken 3 and every iteration since are still great games.

Tekken 4 and 5 are by far my favourite Tekken games of the Franchise. Especially Tekken 4 is sourly the most unique and underrated (mostly because of the choices that hindered the competitive scene) but it is my favorite Tekken to date, because of the very seriousness Vibes of the Story aspects perspective. The seriousness atmosphere of Tekken 4 it's on another level in my opinion. The soundtrack is what gets me the most next to the game's atmosphere. With soundtracks like: Fetus(Prologue), Authentic Sky, Unihabited(Mall Area) Didgerhythm(Jungle Area) Touch and Go(Airport Area) and Kitsch(Beach Area) and The Inner Shrine(Hon-Maru Temple) and others soundtracks, For me Tekken 4 remains even in these days the most Unique Tekken game of the series.☯️

The character Tiger reminds me a lot of that old series "Tiger Mask". It is about a boy raised in an orphanage. I can't remember if he was kidnapped or escaped or whatever and were picked up by criminals that trained him to be a wrestler. He did end up a pro Wrestler and were supposed to give half of his earnings to the criminals who raised him. Instead he gave it to an orphanage that the criminals later attacked I believe. And then I can't remember anymore. It's been many years since I saw it. Could this be a coincidence or could it be an inspiration to their character in Tekken?

Its a shame it doesnt have a lot of views. Tekken has always been my fave fighting game. T2 was my first Ps1 game back in 1996. I always used Jack-2 and Paul. I skipped out on T3 but did play it on the arcades now and then. TTT was my first Ps2 game back in 2000 and it was amazing, good graphics, animation and OST. I skipped on T4 as it really didnt look that appealing to me and got T5 which was fantastic. Then got T6 which was also good followed by TTT2 and soon to be T7. Tekken has been well balanced and all characters are equel against each other. However the only problem with modern Tekken games is i think the Air Juggling has got out of hand and can be quite 1-sided when playing online.

@@binho2224 Oh! At the time I heard the trivia, I thought SF2 was the first SF for some reason. Though SF1 isn't bad, it is just harder but more balanced. SF2 dumbed down the game to appeal to a broader audience. I just wish there was more polish and characters in SF1.

I still don't understand the "Paul beat Ogre" thing, everyone says it happened but never give source when or how that happened. (I kinda remember it in T4 Paul's intro but as far as I know that was not canon.)
@togashinoishi
@togashinoishi 7 жыл бұрын
The short answer is that Tekken 4 is the official source for what happened in Tekken 3, because it's the first game in the series that puts the story into the game, instead of having it in the manuals. This means that Tekken 1,2 & 3 is a nightmare to fact check, because the manuals were sloppily translated, and the manual for the US region could contradict what was in the manual for the PAL region. Either that, or it talked about something else entirely. The long answer: The only way to get a full rundown of what happened in the story is to check out Namco's official Tekken website. it had a full rundown of the story at the time, and when a new game came out , they added to it. The old sites are defunct, but some of them are still up. There is a Namco Tekken site that is up to date with TTT2 stuff (entire story, all in japanese). Here's an old bandainamco site with character profiles for Tekken 3 (all in Japanese): bandainamcoent.co.jp/am/vg/tekken3/ Another issue with researching the story for Tekken is that they retcon a lot of stuff in later games. Funnily enough, it sorta pans out. Its very similar to how Akira Toriyama drew Dragon Ball back in the day (He never changed Goku's hairstyle for example, so he turned it into a plot point several years later that totally works). As a short rundown, beginning with Tekken 4 (because it's where you're able to get the full effect of the story): Tekken 4 : -Tekken 4 retcons the devil gene (I have this in my Part 3 documents, but I can't remember it off the top of my head, sorry). -Introduces an official arena for the Iron Fist Tournament (which led to me scratching my head at why everyone fights in random stages in earlier games. Because of that, I actually created a complete tournament ruleset, with character placements for every character in the early games. I later cut this, as it ate up a lot of time and was pretty speculative.) -Sets up Jinpachi for Tekken 5 (Hon-Maru, where he was imprisoned) Tekken 5: -Jinpachi is introduced (guy who founded the zaibatsu). -Asuka Kazama is introduced (an explanation for why Kazuya and Jun had a child together) -first time Paul apparently beats Kuma, although it's up for debate. Tekken 6: -Lars Alexandersson is introduced (Does not have the Devil Gene, explanation for why Heihachi can not be the originator of the Devil Gene) And so on... Every new Tekken game adds a little something to the past games; the lore, if you will. The issue is that every new Tekken game also introduces more questions than it answers. Jinpachi, the founder of the Mishima Zaibatsu, is introduced - which is great. He was foreshadowed in Tekken 2, with Wang visiting his grave. The problem is that Jinpachi seems to turn into his Devil form in Tekken 5, which causes a plothole. Why doesn't Heihachi have a devil form then? Does it skip generations? That can't be true, because Jin inherits the Devil Gene from Kazuya. This was later retconned, and it stated that Jinpachi was simply haunted by a ghost. Okay.Tekken 7 introduces Kazumi, and it turns out that she is actually the source of the Devil Gene, which gets most of the pieces to fit into place. There are also tons of small adjustments that I had to make while reading up and researching it. Originally I wrote that Jinpachi was the one who turned the Mishima Zaibatsu into the powerhouse it is today, but that is wrong. Heihachi was the one who grew the Mishima Zaibatsu, and this is actually referenced in Tekken Tag Tournament 2: in the opening intro, Jinpachi drives a taxi to the tournament, because he can't afford a car or a fancy limousine; he's broke. Sorry for the rant, but I hope this clears some stuff up.
