I don't think offensive stepping is bad per se. As long as you're not flowcharting it, it's fine. If you notice your opponent likes jab checking you after blocking a DF1, by all means, step and launch that shit.

Absolute gem of a video. PhiDX is really the best learning resource out there right now. I fear a bit that the prospect of labbing all kinds of situations of two consecutive moves will seem overwhelming to people. I think it is really important to get some quick wins! Maybe you could do a video on typical flowcharts to blow up by sidestepping. (Bryan b1 on block into df2 -> SSR to beat etc.)

The questions BoxBox is asking make me really happy because not only does it show that he’s very seriously trying to engage with the learning process, it’s causing him to learn a fundamental truth about Tekken and all fighting games: these games are built on edge cases and sometimes stuff just doesn’t make sense

This man is a goldmine for people like me. Been a Tekken player for like more than a decade but I feel like I learned so much about stand blocking, punishment, when to SS, etc in the past few days than I ever did for the last decade or so. Making my way through yellow ranks and it felt insurmountable to me before I checked this channel, but it's unbelievable how much 'comfortable' the yellow ranks became after watching his tips.

This is true. In VF sidestep and tracking moves are much more standardized and therefore far easier to understand. I think is one of the reasons VF has had an in depth tutorial in the past but Tekken never really has. It's too complicated to cover all this.

4:10 Not sure if it comes up later, but for anyone wondering how this move gets away being only -6, it doesn't launch crouchers, instead becoming +5 on hit. So low reward for calling out crouchers, but great for frame traps or punishes.

On the point at 21:40 , Different people play the same character in a different style. It's amazing because it shows how they all can come up with their own style and at the same time it's tough because you can't learn to memorize all of their styles. So yeah, 8 or 24 hour lab against a single character does not mean you can beat all the players in the world who use that character. It's impossible. Muscle memory improves over time with experience and by playing lots of people you're exposed to new techniques and setups, and your mind needs time to adapt to them in order for muscle memory to kick in.
