hey! Reina from the video here. Just wanted to comment that after this stream and trying to take this stuff to heart I shot up to red ranks almost immediately and a lot the matches I won to get there were against red rank players and in some matchups I wasn't familiar with - I wouldn't really say I was stuck in orange ranks, but the tips here being stuff that I can remind myself of mid match to not lose rounds to strings or simple tekken stuff helped a ton, especially going into the majority of the cast I just haven't had time to lab yet.

Congrats bro. I'm a reina main currently going up and down ruler ranks, one thing about Mishimas and I'm sure you've found this out too is that you can't just push buttons and hope people get clipped by them. You have to actively pay attention to your opponents flow charts. And to me that's where the fun starts.
@snizzle6174
@snizzle6174 Ай бұрын
@@meysamsamadi7587 For sure. I think that's the core of tekken in general, there's so many ways around moves that it forces you to be careful on offense and defense. Though tbh I've gotten very far just by being an anime FG veteran used to blocking cursed horrific mix so I win a lot off of like, just being able to block snake edge and punish the easy stuff. In red ranks we're like halfway there - people have a few options and they are paying attention to what hits and what doesn't, but like, it's easy to push us out of our comfort zone because we don't have a very deep bag of tools yet. It's why I've been really trying to get used to using F2,3 and DF3,2 (4,2? can't remember rn) for alternate stance pressure situations.

@@snizzle6174 f23 is good but people usually mash you out of sentai. But df42 into HR is very effective. And when you're in heaven's wrath, 1,4 is a proper frame trap. One thing I've noticed is that after Raiden, opponent expects you to go into sentai. But you can opt out of it by holding back button. It's an effective bait basically.

18:51 That’s me 🙋🏾‍♂️ I mentioned this in the Twitch stream, but I’m a VERY casual Tekken player. I decided to buy Tekken and follow you during RDC’s training arc against Afro. I play every few weeks when I have a block of downtime from adulting. Raven is the only character I’ve played with in this game so far and this is also my first fighting game in over a decade. I barely know any of the Tekken verbiage or game styles so I’m definitely a panic masher lol. I say all that to say that there’s a huge learning gap for me and a lot that I don’t know yet. I essentially just play for the vibes and to unwind right now. Nevertheless, I look forward to using this video to improve! I’ll send you a progress report after I’ve had a bit of time to lab and learn some of the things you’ve mentioned. Thanks for the review and feedback tho Phi ✊🏾❤️🖤💚

As a Raven main myself, I can see what some issues are, aside from what's been mentioned. Firstly, Raven isn't that great of a poke character, but he does have one solid poke: df1. It has a follow up by pressing 4, and tracks to both sides. You didn't use it at all. Instead, you're mostly fishing for launchers & counterhits with df23 while not having a good sense of his range or timing (Note: ff3 is much more effective as a mid-range whiff punish launcher than df2). You should be utilizing more df1, and utilizing more of his advancing pokes that give him stance opportunities. For instance, f23 can go into Soulzone by pressing 3+4 or holding d-pad down during the 3, as does the basic 1,2 combo, 41 goes into backturn, db2 goes into backturn, db21 can go into Soulzone, df2 goes into backturn, etc. And that leads into the next major thing: With Raven, his most important frame traps exist in backturn, especially when it comes to anything off of bt f3 on hit/counterhit. So if you play Raven, you have to get comfortable with his backturn stance. It opens up some frame trap options & counterhit opportunities by utilizing auto-backturn moves on hit, and you'll still be safe enough to turn back around & block if you have to. You can also throw out of backturn. You showed some small amount of backturn comfort & utility in the Hwo match, but you need more of it with Raven. As far as his lows go, SZN4 is a good option for these ranks, but you'll want to rely on point blank range SZN4 less as you rank up because it functions like a slide in that, at close range, it's launch punishable. It's still very useful in orange ranks because no one in those ranks are gonna know to launch it (or know the matchup in general), but it would be good to start experimenting with the range for more long-distance approaches, as it gets safer the further out you are (-9 at tip distance) and will still launch on counterhit. Other times, you were was using db3, which is probably his worse low, as you can be floated out of it since it starts with a jump. At average ranges, ddf3 is the best low Raven has, as it goes into backturn automatically and is safe on block at -9. There's also d4, which is about as punishable as db3 _on block,_ but doesn't get you floated on interruption. Keep db4 in your mind a well, as it can launch into a combo against some larger characters. And utilize his hellsweep with full crouch df3+4. It serves as a great mixup option, as you go into Soulzone automatically on hit. Lastly, if you want more counterhit opportunities from neutral, you should also utilize more quarter-circle-forwards (⬇️↘️➡️) and qcf cancels (⬇️↘️⭐). Raven's qcf options give you both a mid-range keep-out launcher in qcf4, a counterhit launcher in qcf1 (with a 2 follow up that will give you a tornado in combo chains), and a high-crushing low in qcf2 that will give you a +14 advantage on counterhit & guarantee any 14f follow-up like df1 or 1+2. The qcf cancels will allow access to your while rising/standing moves out of neutral like ws1, ws2 (which launches on counterhit) and ws32, which launches on hit, meaning you can duck highs & some mids while advancing forward, and have multiple options for punishing whiffs. EDIT: One last thing to remember: inputs that utilize a clone follow-up - like qcf12, ws32, db211, etc - the clones will be -14 on block outside of Heat. It won't matter a whole lot in these ranks, but keep in mind that his clones are much more effective in Heat, as they go from -14 to -3. Speaking of, don't be quick to burn your Heat right away. Welcome to Tekken! Hopefully, you'll stay a while.

People using prowess as an excuse like using elo hell/their rank as an excuse as to why they're bad. The prowess means nothing other than how comfortable you are another character, but doesn't translate thst directly, just like rank. There isn't really a issue other than a skill issue.

it's pretty frustrating picking up a brand-new character and getting *zero* time to get comfortable with them you hop into a match, barely knowing your buttons, throw out some moves and surprise surprise, this person already knows your frame traps, which strings to duck, what you're gonna do after certain strings you can still win by playing solid and keeping your offence/defence tight, and I definitely do, but not getting literally any time to warm up to a new character is so agonising

@NyxDiscordia33 run matches against ai/bots first, it actually helps in this game. At least enough to get comfortable with your buttons and run it against GoD ranked AI that have good habits, that's enough to get you stable enough to practice. Battleruler to blue is mostly fundamentals and understanding the basics of your character. You can get to blue with frame traps, poking, and basic punishments. A lot of people will not respect frames because they don't know or they are mashing. Fast lows and throws will help you beat people who use armor attacks carelessly or are passive. For now, mostly keep things frame tight. Using advanced tactics at this rank won't do much for you and may even be detrimental.

As a beginner, I overthink unecessary things and I can’t see the main issues of my gameplay, for example I was obsessed with learning to kbd but I didn’t know the concept of simplier points like “frame traps”… theese guides are so informative and you are a great teacher, I can’t wait to see higher rank breakdowns! I really needed this guide. Since restarting back to Lidia I've been stuck in vanquisher. Got destroyer last night but have been losing to a fair amount of kings, mirror matches etc, as well as others but really trying to get past garyu which was my rank as Paul. Ive been death matching a shinryu as practice for the last 5 days but didn't seem to do much or i just felt more confident than i thought I was. After 5 days exploring my move set and adapting due to hundreds of matches i felt i had a good grasp of piloting my character for sure but still missing something. I'm enjoying Lidia immensely but need to figure out why I'm not progressing. I'll have to give this video a watch after work but tysm for your guides Phi.

Love your videos, personally using your low block video was really helpful to get into red ranks. I was already pretty good at not mashing and defending when it's "not my turn" My first roadblock so far was orange ranks, but with your wiff punish video I saw a lot more opportunity for combos and started hop kicking to punish more on jin. But in orange and red ranks EVERYBODY loves to hold down forward 3 so that low video was a god send to start punishing people. That video also really helped me with grabs which people love to spam, i'd say every 3 games i get somebody spamming their grabs.

It would be a good idea to talk about the Tekken Power system too, as it basically overrides ranks. A 70K Orange matchup is wastly different than a 170K one, as the latter is two more experienced players with secondary characters, where the main is Fujin or the player have multiple characters in purples. And the game is actually tries to pair people with same Power within ranks too. But mix-up is also possible, and the 70K doesn't understand why he is getting destroyed while being paired with someone with a same rank or lower. That's also a thing in higher ranks.
@pocketoniofficial
@pocketoniofficial Ай бұрын
It literally does not. You can't match someone outside of your rank, regardless of prowess, no matter how hard you try. You are right, a 170k prowess orange rank is vastly diff than a 70k one, but how many 170k orange ranks actually exist? Literally none because even a 100k prowess orange rank would spend about 5 games in orange before shooting right up to the next rank aside from the question of how they got there in the first place. Its near impossible to demote at these low of ranks. People are just using prowess as an excuse to cope about their skill issues the way they would otherwise cry about elo hell and "everyone else sucks but me" in something like league of legends.

I just started a new training method today. My plan is whenever I get badly defeated by a character, I'm going to go straight into practice mode and learn at least 10 of their moves. Then, I'm going to play that character through Story/Arcade using those moves, to help me familiarize with them better. If I run into that character again and lose badly again, I'll repeat the process with another 10 moves and go from there. I'm at the point where I know my character fairly well, but certain characters like Victor, Feng, and Lili keep beating me because I don't encounter them that often and tend to forget what they can do. I literally run into Jin and King multiple times a session though, so I've gotten way better at dealing with them.

@@BustaNAugustaYes, I know, but that's only scratching the surface. I would rather have an option that lets you capture a specific set of inputs from a replay round and practice against those instead of having to manually input them. Basically, a way to clip part of the fight and quickly transfer to practice mode. The way replay is set up right now is still very limited, but it helps. Playing as the characters and getting firsthand knowledge, though, is super valuable.

@@McJorneilI agree with playing the character as the best method. I play several characters which greatly helps my matchup knowledge. Most of the characters I play I’m not real deep with, enough to kno combos, key moves and some setups. The main thing I pull from other characters is getting comfortable using different moves with my main. For example I used to shy away from using slower moves, but other characters have the same frame moves but may have faster animations (limbs or body has more movement in them). Grab a character in practice and play against the CPU on ultra hard. Take the character to quick play or jump in a lobby so you can get more work volume-wise. Good luck homie ✊🏼.

If you are struggle below you really need to go back go fundamentals. You probably dont know when your turn is or when you stand. My recommendation for newbies: learn and use backdash cause sometimes even signle backdash can make them whiff. Spacing. Side stepping when you really understand spacing.

I promoted to garyu twice then demoted and I'm stuck in Orange now, it's like a mental block. When I remove rank restrictions on my settings I mostly beat purple rank players(I'm assuming it's the worst purple rank players). But nonetheless red opponents are quite challenging.

Watching higher level is such a great advice. I'm in the blue ranks, I can pilot my character well, I'm starting to lab character's common strings and punish and even implement different layers during combat. However; my neutral needs work and watching higher level play has helped.

so many players just say "just hellsweep untill purple ranks" and dont realize that orange ranks consiststently block lows. this is compounded when you are on the last orange rank and just get constantly matched with red rank kings alisas and other tiersexuals constantly

await video about how to escape from blue ranks i hit fujin month ago and like a hardstuck i know i am newbie and i need to learn matchups and train punishments and throw breaks and opressive flowcharts and learn to play more aggressive so this is very long path to git gut i think even if this videos dont will give me new information, but it guaranteed to see old things in completely other perspective Like guide-like videos from phidx

How do I go about submitting footage for this? I’d love to try and get some criticism for how I play my Lars and just in general on how to play Tekken as a whole. I’m mostly self taught too, but still don’t know much about the technical stuff like okizeme or which wake up options and things of that nature.

Am I the only one who feels like ranked has started to become " get into heat as fast as possible gain a ton of chip damage and a few pokes and win and don't rematch" Like I understand Im not really great at this game but lately it just feels like everyones strategy relies on Getting half a bar of health down with heat then maybe poke and 1 combo to victory
