I have been playing Tekken casually for years. I’m a 35 year old dad now and I finally have the $$ and (ironically) the time to take the game seriously. I picked up a Kitsune and a Quanba Obsidian 2 so I can see what is more comfortable. I just want to say how much I appreciate these videos. I recently hit orange ranks with Kazuya, in large part, thanks to your hard work.

Same here. Same age, same situation. Picked up a Hori fighting stick, still needs to get comfortable doing those qcf and qcb inputs. I'm always dropping my combos with qc inputs.

@@jpg0029 Yea, same here. I used a fight stick back in the day. The Obsidian feels more intuitive to me than the Kitsune. Instant while standing moves feel easier on the stick too. I do drop electrics more often but i feel like I can am improving my consistency whereas the leverless almost felt random. I miss more inputs generally with the stick but it just feels right. I also hate the amount of ring finger dexterity required for the leverless. Makes me so much worse on one side. I know I would get better eventually with any controller but the stick feels really good while also being less consistent for now at least .

Tekken is honestly 90% about your mental game. If you let it get to your head that your "good" at the game and then start making dumb mistakes, it is really really hard to win back your own mental in a match. A lot of fighting games can come down to that, but with the amount of ways you can suddenly die in Tekken, it's super important.
@christheophilus7154
@christheophilus7154 Ай бұрын
tekken is a game where you have to respect your opponent no matter what. if you think you're nice and start coasting, that's when you get blown up by the random string and the mental goes boom

True, I always have fun. I have a lot of losses and I like to compete. But the fights are very entertaining to me and it keeps me light hearted and optimistic. I think I am the only non toxic in the community despite how much I get harassed for mistakes I make. I got that "can do" attitude at all times. I love the game and I always have fun despite some of the issues the game has, nothing is meant to be perfect, ya just got get after it, thats life.
@ZaChousenWan
@ZaChousenWan Ай бұрын
@@christheophilus7154 Yes, you always have to respect your opponent. But in Tekken 8 specifically, don't forget to make your opponent respect you. Too much respect towards your opponent can lead to poor and predictable offense, because you're constantly worried about getting your low blocked or your moves stepped. You may subconciously limit your options and not take advantage of what your character has because you're afraid your opponent knows and will counter it every single time. This is something I learned from transitioning between Tekken 7 to Tekken 8. In 8 you gotta take risks and reads while being aware of defense.

Man this series is just what I need right now. I hit Tekken King with Yoshimitsu, then demoted a ton and realized I had terrible habits. I started playing Bryan a lot (he's my main now I've dropped Yoshi conpeltely lmao), and while I've reached a somewhat satisfying level of execution and decision making with him right now, I hit a wall that made me really reconsider why I was even playing T8. After giving it some thought and only playing Quick match/Tekken lounge, I reached a point where I realized I really want to become a better player, but I had to accept that I need to change my routine for playing. I've gone back to the basics and am doing my best to set small goals, go over replays and seriously lab, and I can already see it paying off a bit. This series has me really excited, so keep it up Phi!

One of the best fighting game tutorials I ever watched was ceelow's cammy to diamond video for SFV. He starts out just teaching you how to get up, how to do footsies, and how to anti air then just lets you do that until you hit silver or gold then starts incorporating basic oki, tick throws, etc. at each new rank.

I know it'd be a while yet, but I'm already excited for the god blue and onward ranks. I'm struggling a lot at Raijin just because of how much the game shifts from "how well do you know your character" to "how well do you know this matchup" and "how good are you at adapting", as well as unlearning bad habits to learn good ones. Your videos have already helped me improve exponentially at Tekken (specific reaction practice against Dragunov buttons and Law's Blackout Muggin helping me get better at low parries) and as a result helped me build the confidence to compete at tournaments in my local area. Hey, Phi, at 5:20 when pilot comfort is the only thing in the notes, you seem to completely gloss over the command history which says 1 frame 4 into d4 for 15 frames, indicating that Fifty Ten Hull was probably trying to do the stomp instead of the high 4, but weren't quite comfortable with it yet. The second d4, was probably an attempt at remedying that, doing the move again.

Alright, alright, I think I got a bit carried away... :D A big thank you to Phi for your videos, I've learned so many interesting things from them. :) At the beginning of the year, I decided that this time I would finally achieve something in Tekken and improve my skills. The idea is simple - create a KZbin channel so everyone can follow my journey, come up with a challenge and complete it. :D So, I came up with three phases for my challenge. (I really learned a lot because of this challenge) 1 - Win 50 ranked matches with every character (totally basic gameplay just to get a feel for each character) 2 - Choose my main character and reach Tekken God rank or higher 3 - Reach Tekken God rank or higher with all characters. I'm stuck on point 2 at blue ranks, but I'm still fighting! :D Maybe in a few years I'll manage to reach Tekken God, but thanks to you and all those "little" tips you share, it's much easier for me! I've rambled on a lot and probably no one will read this, but thanks again, everyone, take care and have fun playing! :)

This video was amazingly rudimentary and helpful not only for Tekken, but in some parts, fighting games in general; I really loved it! The best part of this, in my opinion was the tip on learning how your character controls. Some characters do be playing an ENTIRELY different (and sometimes weird) game from other characters and learning that flow of that character does wonders for getting the hang of a game.

From google cause i didnt know how to word it The verb “swing” is an irregular verb. Unlike regular verbs, its past tense does not take on the typical “-ed” ending. Instead, the only correct past tense form is “swung.” There is sometimes confusion with the nonstandard and dialectal “swang,” but it's not recognized in standard English.

Coming from other fighters, learning the wake-up and OTG situation is really rough. There are many states that you or your opponent can be in, and the options differ. I know its really character and situation dependent, but maybe a longer video going over examples and how to deal with Oki/OTG situations would be awesome, nobody talks about it. From my experience, DVJ and Hwoarang leave me face down the most often, which means you can't tech roll, which means that if you press anything other than back, you get blown up.

Your videos help so much. I look forward to vol. 2. I'm a 115k prowess Lidia main (used to be Paul --max Garyu) and I've been really trying to not let rank get to me and know that I'll get there in time, but it's hard to see progress. I don't want to move like a jet but feels like sometimes you don't see it. I've been doing deathmatches with this Shinryu Jin I met online, and it's been nice, but I can't beat him consistently yet. I'm just afraid of staying in orange forever. I do have lots of fun with Lidia more than I ever did with Paul, so my matches are a bit more enjoyable, but it is still so frustrating. My defense is 48 and I try to block more, but yea...I know its one of my big problems along with sidestepping. I still end up not holding back at the right times or I eat a stupid snake edge and I'm in a combo or my opponent sees me turtling so they just go at me. Rough stuff...

It's good to get comfortable with your character and start to use more of their tools, but one thing that beginners are really, really bad at is adapting (in any fighting game) one thing that I really think you should start to drill early is hit confirming and reacting to counter hits some characters have kits that almost exclusively revolve around capitalising on your opponent's mistakes and landing counter hits, but so many low ranks (not even low ranks, I've seen Blues and even Tekken King's that don't react to counter hits) aren't ready for the CH situation and don't have a plan for when it happens conversely they'll also throw out a lot of full strings, even if it starts to get blocked. A really good example is flash punch (the Mishima 1,1,2). A lot of Reina's will do the full 1,1,2 in neutral because it's an easy panic button and they get blown up for it because flash punch is LAUNCH PUNISHABLE (-17). So if you're a beginner and you want to take things to the next level, hop in the lab and get used to reacting to whether or not your hits connect. Go into training mode and set the dummy to randomly block and get used to reacting and how it feels to react to whether or not your hits connect. Don't worry too much about like, quick jabs or faster strings. A really good example is Lidia's Political Storm (f1+2,3,1+2), which is a pretty long string. You can wait to see if the rest of it was blocked or not and finish the 1+2 if it connects or just block if the rest is blocked. The same goes for counter hits. Find some key tools in your character's kit that give you a lot of value of CH like Lili's f4, Bryan's 3+4, Jun's df4, Steve's b1 and set the counter state in training to be random. If the CH goes through, do the combo, if it doesn't you don't. (what you do if the CH doesn't happen depends on the character and the move so experiment) Anywho, I hope that helps. If you start to recognise situations like these consciously and unconsciously (which is more important in my opinion. I can get hit by the same move 4 times in a row and say out loud "I should've launched that", but what's really important is making that impulse second nature) I promise you'll start to win more and lose less. It also just feels awesome to finally get those two puzzle pieces to click like "oh! that landed on counter hit! It's combo time!"

@@xilverknight155 To be honest, I m still laking basic skills: Learning piloting the character just takes more time for me. Doing stuff out of block (while pressing back) especially in matches is not that easy in terms of timing and also execution (WGF e.g.). If you have any idea of advice I ll happily take it. Anyways I will just use Phis latest series as an encouragement to get back into playing tekken on a regluar basis

i saw the video was an hour and a half long and thought "oh no i aint watching this in full we skimming" but then as i watched the intro because that part is mandatory in my book i realized "oh i dont have to watch the whole thing just the parts for my rank" then i realized "shit its going to be a while before he gets to raijin. i hope im not hardstuck that long XD" great video tho very instructional io watched bits and pieces of each rank since you didnt have mine lol

i realized my comment might need some context. im an introvert id rather be at home than go out i play tekken after work and the weekends almost every day for minimum one hour up to 3 if im being extra "dont wanna move from my chair today" lol. for the record i do hangout with friends every now and then but yea you extroverts can go to hell with your hella invites(in-game of course) if im raijin by the time his raijin vid comes out im hardtsuck XD

I ranked up to red ranks (Shinryu) very easily. Then I stopped playing for a few weeks to focus on other games. What a mistake. Now I can't win any match 🤣 got to get myself used to the game's constant 50/50s again

I just brought the base game a few days ago (basically 1.07 patch) and at the lowest aggression and a bit of basics with looking though the full moveset to get a bit of an idea alone is enough to win some rounds occasionally but rarely win a set, I played jin for 40 matches, got 2 wins and then switch to yoshi, currently 0/37 I guess this is from entering tekken 8 months late, only experience I have before is 1 game of tag 2 in the arcade

Got a few characters at god rank and I’d say up until raijin you can get by with pure frame traps, kishin and mainly bushin, it’s 50/50’s and knowledge checks you don’t need to really know your frames exactly or your enemies or even how to punish correctly, or frames on hit being negative or plus, challenging frames, side step side walking, but when you hit tekken king + is when 50/50 matters significantly less it’s more pure knowledge checks and punishment side steps included that’s what I really seen as I climbed up with my characters to gold rank and above, you really don’t start learning tekken until tekken king and I’m not saying anyone below that isn’t good on the contrary your great, you can probably even push to almost god if you’re consistent enough but at some point you’re gonna hit a barrier and think I have absolutely no idea how to play this game, that quite literally happened to me when I hit king and I went to get into god ranks I realized that I have no idea how to play this game and my own type of tekken my own playstyle and when I did it felt like me and my opponent aren’t even playing the same game anymore, learning is a process and everybody should be proud and take your time as you need it to find your own way of playing tekken

I was stuck on Garyu with Asuka and this is my first fighting game at 120 hours. so I switched to Jun and Got to Garyu in like 3 days, but I lost like 8-10 straight games and went back to mid-orange. I have good side steps and I can block lows and break throws but my main issue is I just cannot do a solid combo in games. I pass the trials but In the practice game, I just can't find the time I feel too flustered and I forget what the next step is. I know I need combos but my win rate is honestly higher when I don't use them and just fight.

Practise combos and what you need to do after you accidently do a counter hit launcher, so you can rely on muscle memory to respond for you and wont have to think about what to do next while the opponent has already fallen to the ground
@TJBlack3.5

Also I reccomend using double jabs twice and try to do a quick mid that has a high extension as a string to get extra damage after catching them ducking

you can set the training bot to randomly block or randomly get counter hit so you can practice reacting to actually getting the launch. It takes time.

Yo thanks for this man. I just started on fighting games with Tekken 8. Never played them before and enjoying it so far 😅 (Playing Nina). Currently on Cavalry and my god I checked my inputs and boy do they look like that Second Xiayou player. Need to get myself to calm my nerves and look at the opposition character rather than my own 😂. (Always wanting to check whether the move happened or not.) I am starting to get a hang of things, just that it feels like my brain thinks and knows what I was supposed to do, but man does that not happen instantly on screen and I end up getting hit. It is fun though when I do get to get some in 😅

QUESTION 31:55 "He's tapping back a lot. I'd like to just hold back, right? tapping back introduces a neutral and that neutral can get hit" I thought neutral was standing block.
@brennansierra
@brennansierra Ай бұрын
when you hit back, theres a moment where you arent blocking, becuase youre in the animation of stepping back. so you can get hit. hes saying it wouldbe more ideal to just HOLD back , because then you arent gonna have those split seconds of being vulnerable.
@JonathonTheAsshole
@JonathonTheAsshole Ай бұрын
Not everything can be stand blocked. A lot of stuff you actually have to hold back in order to block it.
@Nako6009
@Nako6009 Ай бұрын
@brennansierra you can actually block during your backdash animation but neutral guard doesn't block all moves which is why you can get clipped when spamming back.

@eddiepeach3975 from what I understand it's kinda random what moves don't work which is why we don't recommend relying on neutral guard

Phi this is my first tekken and i have no idea who to main. I've used so many characters and I've dropped so many that i thought were cool because there were just some of the moves feel impossible to do like kings throws. I'm currently using Kayuza but I can't do his electrics in fights only in practice. I am going to try out your suggestions here about frame traps but should I play a more "beginner friendly" character?
