I liked that we went from essentially a grim silhouette of him, to his current design as we learned more about him. It never even registered until it was brought up how much his design changed, it just kinda fit for me with him going from just kinda a plot device, to being fleshed out and meeting people who personally knew him. Like early on we met the legend of Gol D. Roger, now we're seeing the actual man behind it.

Oda said that when he started the Alabasta Saga he knew he'd need a princess, but didn't decide on one yet. Then, he just looked at Miss Wednesday, and went "you look like a princess" - so she became Vivy. If he didn't do that, we would've had a different princess, and Vivy would've stayed Miss Wednesday - a one-time random gag antagonist.

Another thing wasn't mention, the Super Nova was not planned until the chapter they were introduced. Oda or his editor thought the Sabody arc might be too boring, so Oda instantly created them. So the relationship between Boney and Kuma was not planned at all before Sabody

Having done a bit of writing for friends, I've found that even when I plan out what I'm writing, sometimes different ideas come to you during the actual writing. This probably is something that Oda deals with since he can't go back and fix since he makes one chapter a week, so he has to continue on and hope that it all makes sense in the end.

@@jjjjjjaylon Vagabond, Vinland, HunterxHunter are on hiatus and berserk mangaka died without finishing (RIP miura). All this critically acclaim great mangas are always in hiatus because its that hard to maintain a good quality manga consistently on a weekly/monthly basis. I give Oda sensei credit because for almost 25 years, he consistently bring quality manga not only in the writing aspect but also in his drawings (love HxH but the drawing of that manga is just lazy). On average Oda is releasing about 42 chapters per year while togashi is releasing 16 chapters per year.

5:00 it's not as much as Vivi being a princess, it's Miss Wednesday's being Vivi. Oda was putting out Whisky Peak already, while writing Alabasta on the side, he needed a princess for Alabasta, and came up with Miss Wednesday being actually Vivi, undercover within Baroque Works. That's probably why he ended up going with that awesome but out of character Luffy vs Zoro fight, making it the catalyst for Vivi to open to them

I think about Vivi. Oda may have planned on having the strawhats meet the princess of Arabasta, but he wasnt planning on Vivi being the princess. maybe the princess was just being kidnapped by barroque works in wisky peak or something but it made her look weaker, instead we got a more proactive Vivi being a spy

He said it in an interview for the One Piece Magazine, IIRC, and GLR or Roger made a video about it. He just thought the character he had created for Miss Wednesday looked Royal when trying to come up with a princess for Alabasta, so instead of creating a new character he built that into Miss Wednesday

Maybe editors have more sway over the decisions for newer authors who are aware their series can be pulled at any moment if they don't sell, but I feel like Oda is so cemented in the magazine and the company overall that he has free reign to tell the story however he wants (unless it's something extremely drastic like killing off a straw hat)

Yeah, I’d imagine it is like that. One piece has been the best selling manga for decades. I am pretty sure if he says he wants to do something they fully trust him. Unless he said he wanted Luffy to die or something wild like that. Pretty sure after just a couple years they slowly just gave Oda their full trust and just give advice. They help him make the manga more marketable and bounce ideas with him story wise.

i can tell you as someone who has done some writing the thing with editors is that is a push and pull most of the time, they bounce off ideas to see what works and what doesnt works and how they can adapt the story and certain ideas, sometimes having a second or a third opinion can help you discover weaknesses on your story and polish the narrative even more it does depend on the writer, the editor and the story of course this is also not exclusive to editors, i have a bunch of friends who are also writers and we are bouncing ideas from one another all the time

I think that Oda planned on Haki to an extent but not to the extent that it's featured now because if Haki was planned then certain characters like Crocodile most likely would've had haki since he's a veteran pirate from the new world.

My guess for Oda's view on Haki during Crocodile's arc was that he had a plan on implementing something that could combat Logia users, and that it would show up later in the story, but he hadn't actually fleshed the idea out.

Devil Fruits are a great power system, but it could lead to serious roadblocks if that's all there is to it. Luffy vs Enel shows this better than anything else, some fruits will naturally work better against others, there needed to be something else. Also, fighters like Zoro and Sanji needed to be relevant in fights without the fruits. A secondary power system that accounts for that was necessary for the fights to keep making sense.

The only real roadblock with Devil Fruist is that Logia become virtually unbeatable without haki. The idea of some fruit working better against others isn't really a problem, that just means that when a character has an unfavourable matchup then they have to use more creativity to win fights Enel even showed that he could overcome the weakness by using his DF to create heat and bladed weapons to fight Luffy. More creative fights are a good thing. Keep in mind that I think haki is really cool and interesting but haki actually makes fights less creative because now most fights ultimately come down to who has the stronger haki.

Oda has a brilliant strategy for having both structure and organic development. He maps the main plot of the story then draws cool interesting characters that he later fills in the backstory to fit the main story.

I've said this before, but I'm almost certain that Oda is more of a discovery writer than anything else. Some things that surprise us could have surprised him as he wrote it like Ace being Roger's son. Would explain why his characters are usually so great, discovery writers are pretty good at writing characters.

I watched a time lapse of his colorspread with Tama with the Hat. He drew the scene with her on luffys back. She was looking at the statues. Then ,as if he saw what happened next, he drew her running to put the Hat on the statue. It's like he's looking in on the World. And showing us what's going on.

His characters write at least half of the story on their own, that's why their actions remain consistent. Yes, he places the character he needs where he needs them, yes, sometimes he will come with some ass-pull for plot convenience (Big Mom's amnesia, for instance), but for the most part how they react to what they have in front of them is up to the character. And that's only possible because of how deeply layered and developed those characters are. Even if it is not on the pages of the manga in some cases, I'm positive his tons of notebooks with notes are filled with personality traits and details for every character

Being an author, everything you say is true. Sometimes puzzle pieces fall together in your own mind in a way that not even you expect, other times they start to fall apart and you have to rush to correct them. For example, I once had to create four new characters in about a week to correct a problem I hadn’t realized in my draft. In the chapter I’m working on now, a conversation between two characters escalated into an argument, but that scene didn’t exist in my imagination prior to me sitting down and writing it. Writing, even nonfiction writing, is an exercise in revelation: slowly pulling back the border between the conscious and subconscious mind to reveal assumptions that you didn’t realize you were making, some good, others not. All to say: Tekking probably overestimates the role of the editor in these decisions, though that is what an editor is for: revealing the author’s assumptions to either correct or build around.

Y’all giving him props for writing as he goes . Which isn’t always bad but in one piece case it is very obvious that he’s writing as he goes with some characters literally coming from his ass with little to too late foreshadowing. For example characters like Oden who are very important to the overall story and important in the world of one piece . It is absurd that oden was not mentioned in marineford at the very least . A pirate that traveled with WB and Roger . That’s obviously something he didn’t plan . I won’t give oda as much props as some of y’all do as a writer . One piece is so popular people confuse popular with quality . Oda is a meta writer not a great author . Great authors do almost everything with intent . Also his character dialogue is dog shit . It’s a shame you have all these different personalities and characters and you can’t seem to make a compelling chapter with dialogue between these characters that hold weight . Screaming “Luffy will become the pirate king” is not powerful because we know he will become the Pirate king . This is a shonen of course. Even the fights are underwhelming and inconsistent in the power scaling . Look at the current arc no way Big mom should still be fighting Kid and Law and Luffy gapped Kaido and is going toe to toe with him . Absurd . I read one piece for the lore . Which is overrated as well however I am invested in what some of these anomalies like what is the one piece and what happened in the void century and characters backstories and what certain characters look like. I think this is the meta part of his writing he creates interest in that . However as a writer he is not very talented. Don’t confuse talent with popularity. Characters appearance change all the time . Kaido . Gol D Roger Nico Robin and even Oden is drawn very badly sometimes . I know everyone remembers Kaido original bounty poster . People just ignore the glaring problems in one piece . Haki blooming in fights is the most recent ass pull . Smh .

@@jjjjjjaylon Err.. no?? Nobody is saying anyone writes as he goes, you are just purposely misreading to fit an agenda. As I said in a different comment, he was already writing Alabasta while publishing Whisky Peak, that's thinking ahead and shaping the story. Not to mention the countless piles of notebook he has on everything. But if you are a good writer, your characters have personality, and when you write those characters you do it from that personality, which sometimes leads to things you did not foresee (because it is not YOUR personality). So when you put a well written character in a setting, their actions will be dictated by what personality you gave them, and there's a limit to how much steering you can do. For example, the fight between Luffy and Zoro was an asspull, hard steering to make something happen, and it feels wrong. Why would someone mention Oden in Marineford? Oden is dead, Marineford was dealing with people that were very much alive and trying to kill each other. Except for Whitebeard's final words, not even Roger was mentioned, because they did not concern that arc AT ALL. And you are confusing "foreshadowing " with "namedropping", as foreshadowing for Oden started when Ace was offered the Second Division Commander position. What did you want? Sengoku casually telling Garp, in the middle of a massive war, "Do you remember that guy Oden from Wano? He was part of both Whitebeard's and Roger's crew. Weird, huh?" THAT would be bad writing. There was nothing happening that would call for Oden being referenced. And what does drawing have to do with writing?? So Oda is a bad writer because during 25 years character design changed? You remind me of the guy that said that OP was bad because merch bought in Japan took to long to arrive (I'm not kidding, there's a review in MAL that says that), and that the pacing in the ANIME was slow because Oda was too greedy in his world building, because good anime = short. Last but not least, the concept of haki blooming in fights was introduced in Ruskaina by Rayleigh, around chapter 600. That means that for the last 400 or so chapters, i.e. 10+ years, i.e. almost half of the series, there has not been one asspull, according to you. Sounds good to me! But putting aside the fact that you didn't even realize what your words meant, conflict being parent to development is factual. Why are there anti-seismic buildings, for example? Because there are quakes. Quakes led engineering to come up with a way to resist them. Conflict was parent to development. Why did sharks develop extra rows of teeth? Why did dogs develop facial muscles to capable of emulating human facial expressions? Conflict forces you to develop

I personally think, one Oda's strong points as a writer is that he leaves a lot of things unexplained and just open and can therefore just change the story on a whim. He might mention something but only goes into detail explaining it when he actually has a story in mind. For example, when first introducing Ace, he gives him a reason to be there, but doesn't go into detail what happened. Which means that he could have changed the story on a whim by deciding that Ace would just kill the person he was after and just use him as introduction to Luffy having a connection to Whitebeard, one of the strongest pirates. Only after Alabasta was actually over, he decided he wanted to go that way and therefore, introduced more information. Same for the Warlord meeting after beating Crocodile. He could have easily made it so that he introduces all 6 warlords there. But he chose to only give information about two and only one of them showed some kind of power. For a literal decades-spanning story, it's a small miracle that the worldbuilding in OP didn't collapse in on itself. IMO the secret is how Oda keeps JUST enough information hidden so as to elaborate further upon it later. Take bounties, for example. He could have revealed Roger's bounty to be, say, 200 million or something during early East Blue. It was way bigger than anything we had seen so far, so it made sense, right? But no, he realized he could stretch it out a little more, so he did.

How I see it is the first 5 years of one piece to the rest of the story are not connected as heavily as people think they are. I feel Oda changes or adds to his story by the year rather than have a full idea on everything and goes back to his early stuff to make things connect I think it was called something that made it seem like the writer had the idea all this time with one detail made many years back. Example like paradise being called paradise so ealry in the story I doubt Oda had the idea of the new world when paradise was already made out to be dangerous itself. Her story about finding the truth of the world and needing to travel around to find specific things to decipher really gave way to the theories about a hidden story within the story and how the world government has more shades than we thought before Skypia was a good start but when water 7 began is when a lot of things came together like the yonko and how dangerous the void century is to learn about and even the ancient weapon being shown to have existed once and a lot of tiny details had Oda change the story overall. Then it goes to how scary the new world is with moria despite being lazy was still powerful and Ace's capture for the story. This is the time when Oda probably saw his story was just getting started with lore

I think the anime has a lot to do with why we didn't get to see a lot of Kid in-story. His magnet fruit is a NIGHTMARE to animate, and the anime has always worked on a tight budget. I can imagine Oda wanting to show more of him and being vetted by his editor. On the note about Dragon ball, the editor in question who convinced Toriyama to go with cell instead of the androids was not actually his editor anymore at that point. That's why the arc seems to be changing so drastically compared to most manga since Toriyama's former editor was seeming the chapters as they were coming out so Toriyama had to think of how to change the arc twice after having the original direction of the arcs planned for like two to three chapters.

Right! But How Oda was able to add more ideas and make them work is really impressive. His original plan was for it to end after 5 yrs but look at what happened, it's still running after 2 decades

Law is my favorite character in all of one piece! here are my ideas.. 1- how would law seek his new dream, which is uncovering the secret of the D and it's past history, he obviously needs nico robin's help if it was related to the poneglyphs.. no one else can read them. 2- will law ever have to preform eternal life surgery on anyone? who could they be? 3- what if doflamingo escaped emple down? what might happen? 4- what if law turned out to be a marine agent? will he become an enemy in the future? 5-what will law do after retairing? after the story ends (if he's alive by then)

If you want a good look at how a mangaka and editor work together I would recommend a series called ‘Bakuman.’ It gives you a good look at the relationship between the writers and editors.
