Icon package makes you feel like you bought a lifetime ratchet. The ratchet may not be the best for pro's but the semi pro or hobbyist or even the new tech I think they're great. Harbor Freight is starting to reminding me of the tool section in the Sears stores. You can get a lot of auto tools there that you can't get at Lowes or H.D. for the home guy or beginner plus now a tool line that should last a good amount of time before you start to think "I need to upgrade" just like the old Craftsman line.

Long gone are the days of a solid craftsman product . Makes me sad on that subject. I love that about harbor freight they do have awesome product lines such as Doyle Maddox Pittsburgh and possibly icon lol so far I am highly impressed and tempted to buy more icon products . I really want to hate this ratchet but I have a feeling it will hold up .

@@classiclinesautomotive That's the thing, everyone *wants* to hate on Quinn & ICON tools but they can't without being dishonest. Been using them for years daily & they're every bit as good as brands that cost 4x as much.. have not broken one tool or socket yet. Then again I'm not naive enough to take apart suspensions with a 3/8 drive like most young "mechanics" today. These young bucks are lazy and break their Snap-On ratchets monthly around me.. anything breaks when you misuse it

So I'm a bit of a gearwrench fanboy myself. I bought the set of 4 120xp ratchets quite a few years back back when they were on special for under 100 bucks. They have been absolutely fantastic. Haven't broken any of them yet. I did take them apart and use some permatex red engine assembly lube to lube them up. (Little goes a long way) But I've been using them non stop for over 5 years now and haven't had any issues. Now the yellow handle gear wrench is a 90T. But the 120xp's have the red handle (or polished) depending on which ones you get. I have both. But honestly. I've learned in the ratchet world. Just because it's more expensive or less expensive. Does NOT mean it's better. Design. Features. Availability. All are factors that are more important in my opinion. But hope you enjoy using the new ratchets!!

I absolutely am enjoying using the new ratchets. My hardest choice in the morning when I drink my coffee at my box is which ratchet am I gonna use for the day . So far I'm very impressed with the icon . As far as the most important quality a ratchet can have to me anyways is comfort . Being that I put the icon tekton and gearwrwnch video out I have not used a power tool to remove a fastener so it's been fun turning a ratchet all day lol

I have 2 toolboxes full of all 3 of these brands as a Porsche technician. I have that exact Icon ratchet, the newer version of that gearwrench ratchet, and that tekton ratchet in 18” (not the biggest fan of their flex head detent feeling). It’s hard to pick a favorite but I do go for the icon more often. For the money you can’t go wrong with any of them. I’ll say too it makes a big difference to take them apart and lube them with super lube. Makes all 3 of those feel super smooth, the icon especially. Here’s my take on all 3 brands: Tekton has taken quite a bit of my money lately. I still think they are the best bang for buck brand of the 3. Especially for those that don’t know, when you order through their website you get 10% back in store credit on every order. So I’ve gotten a few hundred dollars in free tools from that. Their wrenches are great quality for price (I bought 6-32mm after seeing your video as a “backup set” but now I use them all the time LOL) and I love that they don’t skip sizes on their kits. Their warranty is also amazing. Just take a picture of the broken product and submit it and they send out the same tool usually next day from what I’ve read. I’ve never had anything break from them though. Tekton ratchet handle also is very similar to Mac ratchet handles btw however Mac handles felt more sticky/grippy. Icon gets a lot of hate from snapon fanboys but fact of the matter is they do the same exact job for a fraction of the price. I have a majority of the lineup and have been happy with all of it. The convenience of stopping by by harbor freight any day if there are any issues is a lot better than waiting a week on a tool truck and then waiting another few weeks on something to be ordered. We also have the different tool trucks come and go with route changes so now I have to walk 2 dealerships down to go to the snapon truck and miss him half the time. So Icon/HF can take my money instead. They are great quality and I always buy something else in the lineup when 10-20% HF coupons come through. Gearwrench/Apex tools.. I have more tools from them than I would like. Seems like the only thing they are interested in is finding the cheapest route to manufacture tools. I do like that the mostly seem unique to only gearwrench instead of another copy paste Amazon brand. They were the only decent looking mid length sockets I could find and were not expensive at all, however the first set I got had terrible chrome finish so I ordered another and returned the first set. Cheap manufacturing also comes along with somewhat poor quality control too it seems. Their wrenches aren’t bad and their ratcheting mechanisms also feel pretty good with pretty decently low back drag. Their new locking flex head ratchet feels pretty good. The head is much smaller than that version that you have (new version model is #81297). But it is around $70-100 on Amazon when you can find it in stock. I’m extremely interested in the 24” 1/2” variation of this but haven’t found anyone with it in stock over the last month. The rubber finish on the soft grip does not feel like it will last as long as the other 2. Mine is already starting to flake a little without ever getting any harsh chemicals on them. (I clean my tools with glass cleaner to avoid that) I hope you really enjoy those ratchets! and look forward to you buying more icon and finding out they’re really not so bad 😂 I always watch the Icon vs Snapon videos so maybe we can get some of that from you 🔥

My 3 favorite ratchets are all Snap-on (1/2, 3/8, 1/4)... That said though, I have a couple of each size Icons for "garbage" work. Fluid spills, pipe extensions required etc... And I'll just say, those Icons have held up pretty well. I really like the new (Not recalled) 3/8ths non-comfort grip flex head. Good length for leverage. But my favorite Icons are the 1/4 and 3/8th swivel head ratchets with the comfort grip. Always find a need for those things and knock on wood, not a warranty issue yet.

Tekton is overhyped. Not saying they’re bad tools, they’re average quality. I can buy average quality anywhere. I’ve used icon ratchets since they came out. I did have to warranty the 1/4 but it was my fault. And the warranty was simple, no shipping, no wait. And I’m not saying icon is the best ratchet, but it’s solid and if it breaks I can have a replacement the same day.

I don't have much faith in the comfort grip handles. I prefer the plastic handled ratchets or the hard handles. I picked up a Snap On comfort grip ratchet and the handle felt like mush in my hand. I noticed that the Pittsburgh comfort grip ratchets had a hard feel that felt positive. Sounds like the Icon comfort grip is the same type of handle. Tony The Technician took a Tekton flex head hard handle ratchet and grafted on one of their screwdriver handles. When Tekton announced that they were releasing a comfort grip I was hoping they would take Tony's que and use the screwdriver handle. They are similar to Snap On's screwdriver handles. I just can't justify spending $200 on a Snap On as I no longer wrench professionally. I have a Craftsman Professional 3/8 flex head ratchet with a plastic handle that has held up over the years. It reminds me of my stolen Mac ratchet with the plastic handle. 36 teeth and a 3 position ball detent flex head. That's a old design gearwrench you need to compare to the new version which has screws instead of snap ring in head after all you are comparing to the best icon and tekton

Completely off topic. What’s the story on the big auger bit in the corner?
@classiclinesautomotive
@classiclinesautomotive Жыл бұрын
So the Auger bit that you are see8ng attaches to a hydraulic motor , the Auger sits in a reservoir and it's purpose is to push a gypsum mixture into essentially a rubber tube with spiral grooves with a spiral shaped piece of metal that pushes material out into hoses I think it will push material up to 50 feet up and whatever length hose is on the ground

i hate when the flex head gets all limp and it seems tekton has the most solid out of the three. once you put a 1/2 deep socket on the end my bet is the tekton is gonna operate the best. lookin forward to seeing your thoughts.

I'm looking forward to seeing how that works out myself with how they wear. I used the tekton yesterday and absolutely thought I was going to break it . Ended up snapping a snap on extension . Never had that happen before . At least with a snap on extension. I used the gearwrench wrench today and I just feel disappointed with it as far as the flex head . The swing is great on it and the high tooth count is awesome but that's about it .

Lol i heard the heart ache as you slowly had to force yourself to realize Icon has a decent ratchet. I was the same way. The wrenches i sat there like no please no. They are really making those B+ to A- grades man. After losing all my US made tools in a fire I am slowly buying morre Icon. I love tekton sockets and until Icon makes the big sets like tekton i have to stay with tekton. FYI Icon sockets have the same broach as snappy and are cery nice as well.

It's honestly funny how Icon is copying Snap-On so much. Even with the pliers, they're still trying to copy them. They just released their own 3-Position Slip Joint pliers. Kind of want a pair, lol I do wish they would go with their own design though. I am curious how that Icon holds up

Tekton ratchets are pretty good. But for reason I don't like the feel or the looks. I'm also not a fan of their fixed head or their flex heads. My go too are my icons, matco and my old snap ons. All very good
@classiclinesautomotive
@classiclinesautomotive Жыл бұрын
I love my Snap on ratchets, and I like the matco chrome handles over their comfort grip. I really want to hate the icon and love the tekton, but I don't know if that will be the case. I'm impressed with the icon. I'm hoping that the tekton is awesome. I'm not a fan of the handle, though.

Out of the 3, I'll always go with Icon. I refuse to buy Apex tools (Gearwrench) unless I can help it. Tekton, I like their US stuff, but the rest just doesn't do it for me. Icon only coppies Snap On on a few things, mainly just the font on sockets and some of their more recent pliers. The ratchets are 100% different, but still really really good, and I've been using their impacts for years with no complaints.

I love Tekton products but they missed the mark on their comfort grip handles, I can't stand it. As far as Icon goes, there's nothing wrong with them. My only complaint is it's time for Harbor Freight to stop copying and comparing them to Snap On. They just need to design their own style ratchet and go with it. Nothing comes close to my two hard handle Snap On ratchets, but Icon would be a fine ratchet if it wasn't a damn near replica of the Snap On.
@classiclinesautomotive
@classiclinesautomotive Жыл бұрын
I agree with tekton dropping the ball on thier soft grip handle .also the icon was a big turn off for the longest time til everyone wanted me to use it which the month follow up video will be out some time this week. Getting back to the icon I hated that it was so close to the snap on using it , it feels like something I'm used to but something different kind of odd but it works .
