Tektronix TDS 420a adding extended options

I add FFT, Video trigger, and Extended Memory to a very cool TDS 420a Tektronix Oscilloscope. Using work by blogger Tom Verbeure, I connect to the device and enable the options. I also add additional memory to the system board. A fun look at this groovy piece of test equipment history.

ShOcK & AWE dream video... Excuse my gushing. But it was exactly what I was looking for (and like). A deep dive into REALLY INTERESTING Tek stuff. Not to mention high value infotainment and just plain COoL. I wasn't aware of this AmAziNg mod. I just pulled out the 420 I have (among others - brag, brag:) and after watching your video I am now just down right giddy. Can I say that on KZbin? Anyway, I set the bell and will sit tight. Will the FFT software trick work on regular TDS420 (without "A")?

For some reason my scope I got from eBay was in super shape but option 1F for the floppy was not enabled. But all the hardware is there. What is the command for the enabling of the floppy drive. I had searched all over and cannot find anything on enabled floppy options. Or am I overlooking that. Video and math enabled just fine.

Nice work! I wonder what those memory chips cost back in the 90's? Not too bad today.

At least no dallas chips in this one to worry about. Have the TDS754D myself ... one of these days I will have to bite the bullet and replace them. Or mod the existing ones with an external cell.

Could you provide a product number for the probes I can run on this unit. Which probe are you utilizing in this video?

I just used probes I bought on amazon, they're nothing fancy.

ok i just found out that if you add "startup.bat" to a floppy and put the commands in there they get executed. So no need to open up the scope and fiddle with the debug port.
