After countless searches I finally found a clear, simple, complete explanation of the IF alignment. For a newcomer to tube FM radio restoration this video provided me with the tools to successfully complete this task after so many failed attempts. I need only two clarifications, one on the alignment of the discriminator performed by looking for the "zero" with the voltmeter while in many articles it was performed with the oscilloscope trying to obtain the fateful "S" curve, and the other question concerns the setting of the oscilloscope in which I have always seen the use of X-Y mode. I have used that technique in a few of my videos, but can’t remember which. Just search the the channel and look for the FM alignment video of a couple of restorations.

Great repair and restoration videos. There are some great guys as yourself on here sharing your knowledge, the bad part is there is some absolute hacks giving horrible advice on how to do theses alignments. One gent in particular keeps making the same bad practices video after video, some of the viewers call him out and try to explain what he needs to do to make a good repair/alignment to the radio but it goes on deaf ears. It is starting to be a reality comedy show, like watching Benny Hill repair radios lol. While the comedy is worth the watch, those who maybe totally new to this hobby might get a junk radio or worse yet get hurt doing it. Once again thank you for your tips and tricks with thorough explanation on what you’re doing. I’m working on a 1950 AM/FM Zenith right now. All recapped and working but just need to do the FM alignment. Just got a a new Siglent SDG 1000X ARB generator for Christmas. Can’t wait to get into the alignment process. Have done many AM but my first FM.

Really enjoyed this Manuel, I’ve been peaking the IF on FM and ending up with not enough bandwidth so might try this. Just out of interest, this was 5 years ago and it seems in your later videos you seem to go back to the more traditional FM alignment. Is there a reason for this? Kevin

No reason, just have found that the simpler method suas produced good results and is less fussy to set up.

Yes, it’s coming from the “trigger out” at the back of the signal generator.

Hello Manuel, A question; I want to try my first (visual) alighnment on a Rheinperle 2054, but do not exactly know what the alighment instructions mean with: for the ZF-abgleich: "Ein mit ca. 15kHz Frequenzhub frequenzmodulierter Meßsender" ist an das Gitter 1 der EF85 an zu schließen. What kind of signal can I use? (I own the same Rigol functiongenerator as you have to create a signal). Hope you can help, thanks ahead! Henny Poort

+Henny Poort : my German is very limited, but I think there is nothing too dramatic called for: connect signal generator at if frequency (probably 460khz) modulated at an audio frequency, to the grid of ef89, etc.

That’s something that takes more than a “remote assistance” to achieve. It would be practically impossible for me to assist you from this end.

OK, I'm going to have to critique this - 1) there was way too much fiddling with the darned scope - it's not a good scope anyway - analog scopes are way better then these silly, slow-updating digital storage scopes for this kind of work. There's no delay - it's updating 30 or more times per second. Most of the time we couldn't see the scale and with all the timebase fiddling you lost us. 2. you talked about stagger-tuning the IF's at three frequencies and that would have been great but you never came back to it! 3. You could have just used markers and that would have eliminated all that messing about with the scope settings . A lot of time just got wasted in this video. If you'd just used a proper sweep generator then you'd have had all the markers and you could have actually imparted some useful info. As it is, we were all dragged along while you dithered about. Somebody said this was the best FM alignment demo yet but I'm afraid it still missed the mark. It's nowhere near precise enough of a demo. Here's what's missing: You didn't identify for us the type of FM detector. You didn't talk about whether you were going to use modulation or not and why. You never mentioned stereo and the FM IF bandwith that's required in order to accomodate that. I've watched so many people put out these videos and none of them have actually made the definitive FM alignment video. All have missed the mark. Sorry - but that's the sad truth. When you're doing this type of work it requires that you be precise and if you;re going to teach others how to do it then you need to be really thorough. It will pay off very well if you actually produce the holy grail of videos: an actual ace of a video on exactly how to do FM alignment, both mono and stereo, leaving no stone unturned. In other words the DEFINITIVE VIDEO.
