The AMX-10RC is very much a wheeled light tank, given its role being consistent with many other light tanks (reconnaissance and fire support) as well as the fact official French government documents classify it as one. As far as the French military is concerned, it's a wheeled light tank. Why not Leclerc? Probably because of availability. The AMX-10RC as well as other armored reconnaissance vehicles are slated to be replaced by the EBRC Jaguar armored car, and cost savings incurred by shipping them off to Ukraine and expediting their removal from service would free up funds to procure its replacements. The Leclerc is France's top line main battle tank, and they don't have enough even for the French Army. The unfortunate thing is that of all the countries which could offer modern Western tanks, it would be the United States. Now getting a lot of them shipped over to Europe would be an absolute adventure, but if they can ship over 40-ton Bradleys, what's a 70-ton Abrams?

@@chaindrive_blvd would be nice. I'm sure we don't know everything, but going through all the footage I can find, all I've seen are the 6 packs of the rockets. Decent, they'll get the job done. I know the US doesn't want to send anything with range, for fear of launching them into Russia, and giving them the excuse to escalate . But the ATACMS block 1 have about the same range as the rockets... But.. if they do have them, they're big time.

Scimitar was meant to be out of service this year but I think the Ajax delay might prevent that. Warrior is being replaced by boxer and we have a lot more of them, plus the first boxer are due for delivery this year. You’d imagine we could spare 40 warriors.

@@clarkeorchard2304 the ones that are scheduled to be upgraded to Chally 3 are needed for parts and replacement in case of future damage to the tanks in use, as it’s not in production anymore. That’s the benefit of Abrams and Leopard 2, they are still on the production line so can be easily replaced and fixed with new orders.

The AMX with a 105MM, Special French ammo, is a Light Tank. This is because it can kill almost all MBTs Russia has deployed. If Ukraine gets 100 AMX Light Tanks, this about 2 NATO Battalions capable of supporting 2 Combined Arms Brigades. Todays announcement the US will give Ukraine about 50 Bradleys, and Germany about 100 Marders, means Ukrainians will have a full NATO Combined Arms Brigade. This could be big if used as a Unit. However, the AMX is not designed to take a big hit. It could be used along the Belarus and Russian borders in dug in positions for added protection while Ukrainian T64s and T72s are moved east to Donbas. The Bradleys and Marders are ready for Donbas service.

The AMX10 RC is not classified a tank. A prerequisite for any tank is the use of tracks which offers certain mobility advantages over tires. Also, the role of the M2 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle is not the same as that of the AMX-10 RC.

AMX-10 RC is a good vehicle with a good range of ammunition best used as backup for infantry recon from overwatch positions with heavy artillery support on call. Reasonable mobility for a wheeled vehicle a bit lighter Maintenace load. It is good against lighter vehicles not so could versus a major armor force penetration of the front lines. Pre 9/11 I trained recon troops as a reservist for the US Army with Anti- tank training being my primary focus using the TOW system.

I conducted a personal letter writing campaign at President Obama starting in 2014, urging offensive weapons (Javelins and tanks back then). It was frustrating to be ignored. Biden, although overly cautious, is making steady progress. It was initially Republicans who voted for lethal aid, which Democrats supported, which Trump then infamously blocked in the Zelensky affair in 2019. Rifles and ammunition had been sent before the invasion, which was in no way adequate. When President Biden finally sent Javelins and Stingers in Feb/March, late as it was, this was a fundamental shift into offensive weaponry which recognized that a full scale war had come, which Putin had to lose. The problem in Western policy is that politicians took quite so long to grasp that Putin needs to be defeated. That requires Ukraine having the capacity to take the war to Russia with our most advanced offensive weapons. There is growing consensus about defeating Putin -- Boris Johnson saw it, Biden said it , others seem to be getting there-- but it lacks a full fledged policy and material commitment from all the allies. We need to get past it, it is all in our head.

Apparently Grippen jets would be a great help (more tolerant of avg runways. maintenance not sure)..which other 1-2 jets would be best? (F-16 way too advanced for example: runway tech, training time, maintenance reqmts etc)

Grippens are the only realistic option. They can land anywhere and can be maintained by an absolutely tiny crew that can be trained in just weeks. F16 requires an army of people, a huge logistics tail, smooth runways, etc.

The AMX-10RC is most definitely NOT a tank! It has a lot of firepower for what it is, but it is terribly vulnerable to even RPG-7 shoulder fired rockets. Its advantages are that it is very fast, good off road capability, and very reliable. It has a good record in Africa. The M-2 Bradly is an IFV, nothing like the AMX-10RC, which is a reconnaissance vehicle in both role and construction. The M-2 is a heavy Infantry Fighting Vehicle, with the ability to transport groups of infantry into combat and support them with auto cannon and anti tank guided missiles. I think the M-2 is more of an escalation than the AMX-10RC.

Fun Facts: 1. Infantry Fighting Vehicles are different than tanks. They are designed to deliver infantry into combat and to lend fire support. A tank's sole purpose is to destroy stuff. 2. Russian armored vehicles (IFVs and tanks) were destroyed at an alarming rate because they were not properly used. Infantry must disembark and support the tanks, the tanks and infantry assault and destroy the adversary, then everyone mounts up again and drives through the hole in the enemy's line. 3. From videos on the internet, the Ukraine army is making very good use of civilian vehicles to maneuver and execute limited attacks or raids. (Fans of history might research the British Desert Rats of WW2.) 4. The Ukraine army has consistently demonstrated military professionalism and understanding of modern warfare. Giving lots of mechanized vehicles to the Afghan army would not have made a bit of difference. Giving these same vehicles to the Ukraine army can be expected to result in the liberation of Crimea in relatively short order.
