On today's special episode of Battle Lines we speak to International Atomic Energy Agency Director General Rafael Grossi. As China rapidly expands its nuclear arsenal and Iran inches closer to a bomb than ever before, Raphael Grossi is possibly the individual most responsible for holding it together. We asked him how dangerous this moment really is, how scared we should be and what, if anything, we can do about it.

Why is all the concern about nuclear weapons ? - what about chemical and biological ? They are much more widely available, easier to use and maybe more devastating, as we have seen with COVID. If chemical and biological weapons are used on a large scale, then, we should be worried about nuclear weapons.

Because biological weapons will hit your side also. Chemical weapons do not have the same area of devastation.

A nuke will negate the biological deployment. It's catch 22, isn't it?

The Russian army has lost most of their conventional capabilities, people and equipment. The time for a nuclear weapon was the start of the war, not this many years in..

I pray for peace in Ukraine and Uk. Russia using weapons is the most dumbest thing they've ever done since the invasion of Ukraine. I pray that God will protect them. God is in control to prevent this.

If God is in control to prevent this, why would it let the world even get into this situation where this is even a potential risk? God's either a poor planner, not being able to foresee this circumstance, or not much of a God by not being able to prevent this situation occurring.

Cool story, bot. When was the last time a Western power threatened to use nuclear weapons let alone your boogeyman, the US? Not in your lifetime is the answer.

@@The_ZeroLine The US in fact. Twice. It wasn't a threat either, but an actual use of nukes in Japan. No other countries has used nukes to cause mass deaths otherwise. Of course, one can argue the justification for doing so given the context of WW2, but it can also be argued that the fission bombs were also intended to intimidate the Soviet Union at the time. Don't forget the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 either, or the stationing of US nuclear weapons in Taiwan during the 1950s.

That's true, but the problem is not everyone considers nuclear war as suicidal. Even at the height of the cold war there were those on both sides who believed that such a conflict could be fought, contained and ultimately won, even if this wasn't the consensus. These days, nuclear weapons technology has moved on, with smaller yield weapons, better first strike capability with hypersonic missiles etc, which has resulted in even more people on both sides considering nuclear war to be winnable. Additionally, many of the 'checks and balances' and treaties put in place by former administrations in Washington and Moscow, have been torn up, and the lines of communication between the US and Russia severed. The risk of nuclear war is far higher these days.
