telephone/data cable modular splicing

this is a demonstration on how I splice my copper cable pairs for your TV, internet, and phone service.

That was great. I've not used the hydraulic hand press type rig like you're using. We just used the standard 3M Rigs Qwest would give us that had a handle you pulled down center to one side. It really is a lost art. It's been 18-20 years since i was in a manhole splicing so I'm sure some of the tools have changed. Overall, i really enjoyed your video. Thank you for reminding me why i don't play in icky pick all day :) Too all those critiquing your work. There are always 6 ways to skin a cat. Ive seen more than 3 dozen very experienced Qwest technicians splice and almost every one of them had their own way in how they preferred doing it to make it all fit in the splice case. If you turn the head so its 90 degrees i find it more comfortable. I can get one hand on each side of the head and its more comfortable to lay the pairs down. Keep your unilength hook on it to bring the cable into the head properly. You can also use like 7 or 8 pluggable mods stacked together. We never used mini mods because they dont have pluggable pins on the bottom so the bottom of the stack always has to be the mini. I like that you.keep you binders all the way. The trainer here told everyone to cut them at the base of the cable and put zip ties on. Looks like youre doing the unilength method. Foldback is much neater imo. You take one group straight from one cable, and you take the other group youre gonna splice it to to the butt of the 1st cable and tie it off, then you take it straight out to the same spot you marked at 1st. Terminate 1st 25 of the 1st cable, instead of putting a cap on it, put a fresh pluggable mod on top. Itll cut and attach to the top of the stack. Then terminate 1dt 25 of the 2nd cable on it and now youre all done with that group and never have to look at it again. Do the whole 2/4 groups in the binder and zip tie the binder to the core. Now you never have to look at them again. I explained the process for one binder group but you should build up the whole core before starting splicing. Like binder group on the left cable comes out straight and will have its module on the right side, its matching group on the right folds back at the left butt then comes straight to the right hand bank. Then the next binder group comes straight out of the right hand cable andnwill lay on the left. The matching left hand cable folds back at the right cable. The groups passing straight across in the core build up and you can put.zipties on to hold them together. It used to be easy to get the manuals from 3m, i dunno about corning. 3m.would.tell you how to do it too

Speed was simple......I did 1200 pair for the boss and banked 6 to 800 for the next day. NEVER turn in 2000 pair in a day or they will want it everyday! I always used two heads if it was over 200 pair cable and tied the binder at the butt and used colored zip-ty at the module. In the end I could read the paper for 600 pair longer the next day............!

I do have the colored zip ties their nice. However they are hard to get here so I save them for when I really need them. Also, unfortunately I only have one splice head or I would use 2

Yea one of my friend quit his job when the cable/phone company went to hybrid.Now they going fiber.Guys had to be retrained,he weren't picking it up fast enough at all, so he gave up.The kind of splicing he did were into a little clear round thing

You're splicing the pairs into the 3M connectors incorrectly. Looks like you're working on a new splice, 24 gauge, 400pr, pic, aerial cable. It also looks like you're working from a bucket truck and building a 2 bank fold back splice using 3M MS2 connectors. Ok. Look at the 25pr wh/bl binder that you've already spliced. The cut corner of that finished 3M module, should be on the left. You're folding the wires back and splicing them, and now the cut corners of the 3M connectors will end up on the right. The way you did it won't affect service but it will probably annoy the heck out of the next guy that has to work in this splice. To him your 3M modules will appear to be backwards and upside down. And why such a large splice opening. 3M recommends making a 17" opening for a 2 bank splice. Are you building a 3 bank splice? And where did you get the pocket knife? Is that company issue? Probably not. Some telco companies will "ding" you for having non company issued tools on your truck." The problem with that knife is that if it breaks and/or you get injured while using it, your company can be liable. In my opinion you should use your snips, shears, or scissors? (They're all the same tool but called by different names in different cities). Using them, especially when making YT videos, will make you look more professional. Thanks for sharing.

It's a 900 pr cable. Also. My splice opening wasn't complete I did not even have the other side of the cable open yet because we didn't have any mini modules in stock... You can see the other half of unopened cable goes well past my splice. It does look like an opening but it's actually just the sheathing holding my binders together at the other end. Yes I know I can use zip ties. As far as the modules being backwards? I'm not sure what you mean I was taught from a guy with 40+ years expirence. And I'm the only full time copper splicer in our plant left. As far as I know our entire plant is that way. Are you saying I should put the cut end of the mod on the right side of the splice head? Or leave it on the left and have the cable fold back from the opposite side from where I brought it in? I've always been told to have the cut end on the left side of my splice head. I know your suppose to use two heads. However I only have one...

I was always taught to make blue/white the long pair in a mod. Is that what you mean when you say cut corner? Also getting into some of the old cases is a pain in general when they split the cable in half and put half of the modules on one side and half on the other but don't leave any slack. I run the feed side the length of the closure, then out to make an L shape so the mods folded back will lay in the case when folded back.
