Thank you, this is useful. With a four wire ringer, the electrical path through the phone is: Through the ringer's black wire coil, then through the capacitor, then through the ringer's slate wire coil.

I used to take apart the wall mounted version of these rotary phones along with a couple of trimline phones when I was 15 in order to clean and repair certain things. And I didn't know what that box with all the screws was called. I just referred to it as " the box ". And I had a small book that I would write down all the wire colors and names of the screw terminals that they went to. So that if I took the phone apart I would know how to put them back together and where to connect the wires from the line cord, handset cord, ringer, switch hook and the rotary dial. This was an interesting video.

I have the same 4 wire ringer and am powering it with a homemade power supply. Thanks for the video it is helping figure out how to make the circuit.

I wrote a message back was already to send and it was gone, here we go again thanks for the answers to my questions as what to try if the ringer is faint. I'll pull the cover today, I'll let you know if I had any luck. our old phone rang good and loud I could even hear it outside and in the garage. The trouble with the white unmarked wall kitchen phone that works great except it leaves my line like its off the hook all the time, and several days go by with out knowing. the brand name is a circle with curved lines in it. from 2005 I imagine everybody has the same problem as (with out) a normal had set(easy to hook, on hang up) and the new style with the buttons in the receiver. there was no good for the inventors of that style to make a decent hook and it was either leaving the phone busy or smashing into the floor. thks

What is the easiest way to make a telephone ringer work with an outside power source? I've attempted using a variac at 70-90 volts at 60hz and get no ring. I understand some ringers will work at 60hz, and some will not.

how do you make the bells ring without an outside line? ring just by themselves with a power supply? no phone line

on the ITT ringer, why don't you use the slate and red slate wires?

I have the 4 wire coil type. I am trying to make this phone ringer my door bell. I hooked up to A&K, then you said call it up. I'm assuming your applying voltage to the red and black wires? If so, AC-DC and how many volts. I was hoping to do this with a normal doorbell transformer which is AC.
@sxsphil3 жыл бұрын
You will need around 90 v AC to ring. DO NOT CONNECT TO 120 line power. telephone ringers ring at 20-30 HZ unless you have a special ringer.

HELLO, I HAVE NUMEROUS PHONES IN MY APT, SO MANY THAT THEY DONT RING. I HAVE A ELECTRONIC RINGER THAT I HAVE PLUGED INTO MY XFINITY MODEM. THE MODEM HAS TWO PORTS FOR TWO PHONE LINES. PORT 1 IS FOR MY PHONES AND PORT 2 HAS RINGER BOX PLUGED INTO IT. THE ELECTRONIC RINGER WORKS BUT I DONT LIKE THE RINGER SOUND. IS IT POSSIBLE FOR YOU TO BUILD ME A WESTERN ELECTRIC OR TRIMLINE BELL RINGER THAT I CAN PLUG INTO THE MODULAR PORT ON MY MODEM. I LIKE THE RINGING SOUNG OF OLD PHONES. THX FEARSRN

It would be easier for you to get a REN booster (or several depending on how many you have) and even easier to disconnect the ringers on some of the phones.

Thank you. Anyone khow I can connect a Western Electric 500? desk telephone two-bell ringer to a Crosley 1957 Public Telephone replica I just bought at a thrift store? Hate thelectronic bell. There is room inside the pay phone replica to install a two-bell ringer. Just one capacitor to allow passage of AC ring voltage but blocks DC talk current? What capacitance and voltage? Thank you.

One microfarad, rated for 150 volts. Wire it in series with the bell. The capacitor shown in this video is built into the "network" box, and he says that it is 0.47 microfarads. Either 1.0 or 0.47 ought to work fine. Yes, the idea is that the capacitor blocks DC. Without it, the DC would run through the coil of the bell and your phone would appear to be off the hook all the time.

@@erintyres3609 Thank you, 35psi. Shall try if I can find one. We moved. You may like my circuit which produced a click before the landline telephones rang! Suspecthat it detected when our landline was connected to the Ring Circuit. Hearing the subtle click, I often answered the telephone BEFORE it rang! (Before ring voltage wasent.) Unknown if it would work on today's telephone circuit which is likely not a relay with metal contacts.) In 1968 we would give our telephone number out, one-digit-at-a-time, between the Busy Signal tones! (Apparently Busy Signal came from a common Buss to which the caller's phone line was connected when the called line was busy.) We now have a *Custom Ring* telephone number which makes the telephones ring Short-Short-Looooooong! We Forward or emergency cell phone to that number. Ouresidence numberings normally.
