25 years ago I watched this with my neighbor, we started laughing right away and didn't stop laughing till two hours after the movie ended

The release of this movie was a really big deal. And the viewing audience loved it, as many do to this day. I recall seeing it at a drive-in movie theater, the place was packed. Back then, families came early before dark so the kiddos could play on the playground. It was mayhem! Amped-up kids running around everywhere. There was excitement in the air. Once the movie began you could hear laughter from all ages echoing through the place. Didn't matter if you were 6 or 60, it was a funny movie and the plot was engaging yet easy to understand. I usually fell asleep before the end of a drive-in movie but not that one. It held our attention to the end, which says a lot for a 3 hour movie. I'm glad to see it's memory is still alive on youtube, as new generations discover and enjoy it as we did.

Poor Spencer Tracy wasn't able to attend the grand showing. I loved his character in the film! Sadly Mr. Tracy really showed his illness in this film but pushed through it to give a great performance as always.

It doesn't matter what some of the critics and press say about the movie, it's us (the people) who'll have the last word. It's still a great comedy classic and there's a reason it was the 3rd highest-grossing film of 1963 and one of the top 100 highest-grossing films of all time.

To this day the funniest all around movie I have ever seen. The cast once in a lifetime collaboration i'll never forget its television premier the whole family gathered around our Big Screen TV 16 inches lol. We laughed til it hurt the slap stick scenes are priceless, the hidden metaphors ex. when Durante kicks the bucket. My favorites were Dick Shaun when he is crying driving down rode I'm coming mama, or when Berle & the British actor reck the car omg the British actor sorry I do not know his name he is a funny funny man. Phil Silvers a classic legendary comedian with that balding head lol. One last fav. Scene the flying expert who is brought in to assist Rooney & Hacket land the plane, he's a mess screaming yelling making no sense falling out of window what a neurotic. Till this day I'm amazed by all these comedians in one movie a collaboration of such magnitude could never be accomplished today. This picture is a testament to the greatness of the comedians who appeared in it all of them confident in there abilities confident in their comedic talent could anyone imagine the one hit wonders of today attempting to make such a picture. Who's ego cannot fit through the door, who wants there name on top, who wants a dollar more than the actor next to them. This picture could only have been made during a time in Hollywood where actor's came from humble beginnings and never lost site how blessed they are to make a living doing something they love. Before all the greedy fame at any cost envious players prevalent today in Hollywood. Several of the actors appeared in this picture with no promise of payment, some took a 50% pay cut because they loved the business, the movie or just wanted to work along side another artist they may never again have the opportunity to work with. Thank you to all who had a hand in the making of this picture it will forever be enjoyed by millions in reruns.

My Dad got me into this since I was young, and I remember it as one of the only wholesome films with no mention of sex or any violence. Another film that has none of that is "what about Bob", but surprisingly you'd be hard pressed to find others

I was 12 years old when this movie was released in 1963 .. For me this movie was confusing and not all that funny at the time A few months ago I decided to watch the movie again ( Internet) again I did not find it all that funny and did not watch the ending .. How you can call this ' a true comedy classic ' is beyond me ..

@@FreedomFighter-cr5xg, if you didn’t understand that the movie was about greed…past and present, then yes it would be confusing to you and you would dismiss it. What also made it funny was the actors were believable in their role, partly because it matches what the public’s perception of them in their known comedic style up to that time. If you never learned to appreciate what they brought to world of comedy, then no, it will never register as being funny later in life to you. It’s the same as music of each generation thinking they had the best music compared to that of another generation.

This very natural treatment of the film's opening in Los Angeles in 1963 is a virtual time capsule of that year. A time so remote today, one would have to be elderly just to remember it. What fascinates me is how UNstartling it all is. A few things stand out, but most of it is timeless. I especially liked the scene where the maintenance man is pulling up the duct tape from, I suppose, the red carpet. The two eras overlap in that scene. But what fascinates someone in 2020 was probably deadly boring in 1963. I can't imagine anyone watching this when it was first aired. Perhaps Canadians are a more patient people. It was also a nice touch to include titles in a font that mimics the opening of the film. The steady use of either lower or upper case letters and then the inappropriate inclusion of letter in a different case indicates mental instability. Which is the story here.

The critics that panned this movie are gone and forgotten. Their reviews are scattered to the wind and no one cares about them anymore or what they said. This film was popular with the audience and that’s who it was made for. It was a huge success and has more than held its own along other films of its time and still holds up today as one of the best comedy films ever produced.

It premiered in Los Angeles on Nov. 7, at the new Cinerama, 15 days before that horrible Friday. The title was just as funny, and to us young kids who saw it that winter, that terrible event the month earlier did not impact the fun, loads of laughs, and excitement with the others in the audience, in the wildest movie experience I ever had! Looking at it now, almost 57 years later, it therefore remains a great period piece in the Kennedy era, (filmed from April to Dec. 1962), so it captures that wonderful, classic California we remember that was growing so fast with its large economic growth, and with its great year-round climate, it topped New York for the #1 State in population before the 1970 Census officially confirmed it.

The humour is admittedly in your face, not subtle, so whilst I find it absolutely hilarious, it will not suit all tastes. Hollywood was largely created by Jews, so with such a large cast, hardly surprising a few or several are Jewish, including the producer/director, and a titan of cinema he was. Those who love and promote the movie to this day are by far from all Jewish, and for most, that is the last thing on their minds when gushing over this movie, so your critique is misplaced. To say the actors are terrible is just pure hate of the film in your view, that is so untrue. Spencer Tracy is known by any film connoisseur to be one of the greatest film actors of all time, and virtually all the actors in this comedy are on top form, particularly Ethel Merman, Jonathan Winters, Terry-Thomas, Buddy Hackett and Milton Berle!
