Telescope Tips- Episode 5. Using Binoculars for Observing. Memphis Astronomical Society

www.MemphisAstro.org. In this episode of Telescope Tips, Jeremy Veldman and Brian Hancock discuss binocular observing. One questions we're often asked at observing sessions is "what type of telescope should I buy to get started?" Actually, you don't need a telescope at all! A good set of binoculars is all you need to see much of what the night sky has to offer. Brian discusses some of the binoculars he uses and gives examples.

My Celestron 25x100 binoculars arrived about an hour ago and I can hardly wait to aim them at Jupiter later this evening. I have been using Celestron 20x80 binoculars for years and think they are absolutely wonderful. It will be very interesting to compare them. I prefer binoculars over telescopes because you can use both eyes with binoculars and that makes long term viewing much easier. You can also use them during the daytime, plus it is just a heck of a lot easier to carry around binoculars.

Easier to carry around, and easier to set up and pack up after observing. I have a 20" dob that I use for Dark Sky observing- the views are incredible, but it's a lot of work packing it up, setting it up, breaking it down after observing. Nothing like a good pair of binocs, and you'll probably use them more frequently!

Hello I'm thinking of buying some binoculars so were you able to see any planets with those and did you see them clear or just like a star

I use binoviewers with my telescope so that I can view with both eyes. Works a treat and there is little to no light loss across both eyes, as many ignorant non owners will try and tell you otherwise.

Been using a Athlon 12x50 and love it , just ordered a Skymaster 25x100 can't wait to get it out. I'll be out in some dark sky's in middle of Sept, but I think there will be a bright moon. Had the perfect location last week for the Perseids, the Full moon kinda killed it. Personally always liked Binoculars over telescopes for Gazing.

Have you guys ever heard of a parallelogram mount? They can be expensive but are much better than a standard tripod for binos.

Hi. I like sky observing. I dont have any tools yet. I wish i could witness sky with my own eyes through those two to find out wich i like more the celestron skymaster 25x100 or new celestron trailseeker ed 8x42 (especially i would like to mention my favourite feature: Very Wide Field of View: 426ft @ 1000yds). OR to look into deeper space with a more narrow angel with skymasters.. i dont know what i would like more.. both are same price level. Trailseekers are easyer to carry but thats not most important. Do both of them have crisp images. Clear image is more important than carrying convinience. Thank you!

Also I wanted to ask about edge vision and clear focus area. I have read a comment that complains that Trailseekers "edge vision is poor and the clear focus area is too small". Do you have option to answer this from direct inspection and not from theoretical ground? Or anybody else here? Thank You!

Great video guys. I grew up in Memphis (MUS grad 1976 oops!). Wish this group was around in the 70s. I did a lot of dark sky viewing in Germantown before it got so developed. Live in Detroit now and use a LX200 Meade 10”. Questions: I have a nice pair of Celestron binoculars but need a good tripod. Can you recommend where to find one? I’ve looked all over. I also recently purchased a telrad finder scope and I saw you video on that. Can you recommend where to place it on my scope for best performance?

Richard, I prefer parallelogram mounts if the binocular is 12# or less- they are much easier on the neck. Oberwerk.com is great to deal with for binocular products. For the telrad, I like to place mine as close to the eyepiece and as close to the front of the scope as I can without interference.

Would you recommend a smaller binocular first? I am currently looking at the vortex diamondback 10x50 which seems nice at the 200-300 range. There’s also a celestron sky master I could possibly get my hands on 25x100 for the same price through a deal. Would the celestron serve well? Or is that too much starting off in binocular astronomy?

I started using Gosky 20x80 binoculars, been using them for a year now and they have never disappointed me when looking up. Seeing jupiter and its moons, the Orion nebula, to terrestrial viewing. Currently did a small upgrade to Oberwerk 25x100 deluxe binoculars. Just waiting for them to arrive. Eventually I will upgrade again in the future to BT binoculars from either APM or Oberwerk.

I think the elephant is the giant set of binoculars in the middle of the shot that are essentially being described as useless by the presenter who is ironically endorsing those that are portable.

Game changer for me watching this video...I did a lot of astronomy years ago and accumulated a lot of gear but lost interest after a certain point when it got too much trouble to haul it out and set it up. Recently, I started at looking at binoculars as an easier alternative but heck I ordered one of the big astro binocs from Celestron and during the wait I watched this video and decided I was on the wrong track. What I need is something smaller with image stablization instead of more gear. I agree with their advice that you will use something more as long as its easy to cart around. I have now ordered one of the new Canon 18x50 and it will be here in a couple of days. I will send all of the other other stuff back . Good job guys you convinced me to spend abt 1500 bucks on something I can I can carry in a small equipment case and use a lot more often instead of filling another closet of gear for less then half I was going to spend....LOL.
