"King of Dancehall" is a different kind of title than "King of Reggae". Bob Marley will always be that, while "King of Dancehall" is apparently a traveling trophy? 🏆 Many say that success in Jamaica is important for this, but nowadays international success is also important. In my opinion, there are many lyrics in the way that seem sexist & from the last century, somehow "out of time". With this you can be successful in Jamaica & some African countries, where things are still very chauvinistic & backward, but not in, f. e. 'more modern' European countries. That's a fact. Why are many Jamaican artists banned from the big festivals there (& therefore cannot present themselves internationally)? It's just because of some of their lyrics! Bob Marley's lyrics are timeless, addressing eternally current personal, political or religious issues that affect people in all cultures. He was ahead of his time (& btw loved/respected in Germany earlier than in Jamaica because of Rastafari), while the lyrics of many dancehall artists seem a bit "back in time". The "sexist ding-a-dong" is part of the genre & is certainly well received in Jamaica (messages have to be understood by the audience - I'm bad ;-)). But Kartel is a talented songwriter, can also be different, a poet, a rebel etc... he also has a lot of potential for other lyrics. 📚 Who knows what else will come?
