It is sad to know that in this day and age, Jamaica, which has one of the most advanced police force in CARICOM, doesn’t have any mechanism in place to deal with people who are mentally disturbed. What is the sense of having the police on site if they are not prepared to deal with anything that occurs? You mean to tell me that they didn’t have pepper spray or taser guns to try to tackle this gentleman and put him in handcuffs without having to resort to deadly force? What, if they can’t use deadly force they don’t know what to do? It is clear to see that the police didn’t know how to deal with the situation. They are not trained, so it takes a private citizen with his licensed gun to try and take care of something that is a police matter. But I guess the police are scared; they are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. They need to be better prepared. Policing is not only about deadly force; there are other tactics. It seems as if Jamaica doesn’t have a real policing tactic in place.
