He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful... the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. It's ironic he could save others from death, but not himself.

The only thing that I liked out of "The Rise of Skywalker" was Ian McDiarmid as Darth Sidious/Palpatine. He nailed it always, proving that even in a shitty movie his quality as an actor reveals itself. And yeah, the robes were nice - kind of a blend between his "Revenge of the Sith" Sith robes. Still, RotS is better than RoS in every way - Sidious/Palpatine included.

Palpatine was the hero all along. He made sure his clone would escape and find a wife to give birth to Rey, purposefully didn't blow up the planet she was on, sent out a message so she would find him, and kept the force lightning going while it was killing him. All to bring balance to the force.
