*Fact* : According to Shiro SAGISU's liner notes, he intentionally composed this music theme for dedicating to the italian film composer "Nino Rota" and other great music writers such as Enrico Nicola Mancini (1924 - 1994), Richard Charles Rodgers (1902-1979), Albert Victor Young (1899-1956), etc. Sagisu explained that the timeline where those music writers lived was *the golden age of melodies on the silver screen* and breifly expressed his grief that "those are now a distant memory". You can definitely tell it's an homage to mid 20th century music. It would fit right in with an epic like Ben Hur, Lawrence of Arabia, or a tragedy like The Godfather I and II. They literally just don't make em like they used to. Man, Sagisu rules.

The most beatifull thing on all Evangelion is the soundtracks. These songs tells a lot about the story, the character personality and more. And this song is just perfect. I love the genius of the Master Shiro Sagisu! Gorgeous!

I once showed this song to a woman. She responded - “emotional”. This song means the very world to me. Personally, it is the main theme of living through negative emotion after calamity. As reflected in the film, the world is forever changed by the actions of our hero - actions that, while performed by him, were not entirely his fault. But the guilt. This is what we are hearing. Pure, heavy, existential guilt. Massive weaving strings and distant brass weaves a brilliant, beautiful soundscape, sounding like a “sorry,” followed by turning one’s head and walking away forever, your actions forever imprinted upon reality and those inhabiting it. It is viscerally personal to me. A sacred masterpiece that I will treasure for the rest of my life.
