Singapore state investor Temasek's net portfolio value went up by S$7 billion, bringing the total to S$389 billion in its latest financial year. That's mainly due to investment returns from the US and India. One-year shareholder return rose to 1.6%, from -5% last year. Singapore remains the single largest market in Temasek's portfolio, followed by the Americas and China. Looking ahead, Temasek sees risks in geopolitical tensions between US-China, and the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. Nadirah Zaidi reports.

So they underperform the s&p500 again. If CNA was truly a journalistic organization, they should compare temasek’s returns with other peer sovereign wealth fund performance as well as market indexes. For example, Norway has a return of 16.1% last year according to cnbc.

Checking with Google .... The estimated total pay range for a CEO at Temasek is $83.1M-$89.0M per year, which includes base salary and additional pay. Seems reasonable to me. /s

One-year shareholder return of 1.6% when there was no recession? What will the return be if there was one? UST yield curve is uninverting ... tick tock tick tock ...

Making 7B from 389B is poor performance. That is only 1.8%.

Cut & Paste - The Monetary Authority of Singapore added 76.5 metric tons (MT) of gold to Singapore's gold holdings. According to World Gold Council data, Singapore had 153.74 metric tons of gold at the end of 2022. Thus, the 76.5 metric tons of gold added in 2023 represented a significant 49.8% rise in Singapore's gold reserves. If don't know how to invest, just buy and hold gold like MAS lah. FYI, Gold price rose 20% from a year ago.

Ever since HC stepped down from Temasek, its net portfolio value keeps rising.

So, where do we go from here? Singaporeans seem powerless to hold Temasek, and for that matter, the GISC as well, to account. Our MPs too are either inept in questioning the government or are just as helpless.

Up 2% in 2023 is actually quite pathetic, frankly. US equity market roared around 30% last year...

Re-make the GIC/Temasek model. Our reserves are, effectively, kept with the government through two conglomerates: GIC and Temasek Holdings

It is dangerous because, in a time where financial scandals can bring down giants in the industry, and with no political accountability in the system, those who are responsible for such losses remain at the helm, and indeed seem to enjoy the support of those in government.

If put all the money in a fixed USD FD, and hire only one man and a dog, I think the return would have been better. Not to mention saving millions of high paying salaries …!

Temasek Holdings seems to be caught in a cycle of bad and inept decision making. In a country which brooks no failure, it is a wonder that despite the failings of the past few years, no one - at all - in the sovereign wealth fund has been held responsible.

Singaporeans must realize that it is dangerous for an organizations such as Temasek and the GISC to be in charge of half a trillion dollars of their money, make huge losses and remain secretive.
