Temi!!! Temi!! I'm your fan! And i think I have found a better method than you :D! I invented it myself and I think it's nice. I accidently made it when i was having difficulty with a sketch. So basically, you take the reference photo in your laptop or phone, you lower the opacity, and you trace the outline and then remove the reference photo. Then you can see clearly the lines you need to copy on paper. :D

I personally like to do the "hard" method. It feels so much freer and in the end, the proportions won't be exact, placement for placement, but that's what gives it character. But when I first stared out, I absolutely started with tracing. I just love the sketch portion in general.

I just combine the three depending on what I'm drawing. I know a lot of people are against tracing, but even the most famous artists throughout history used some sort of a tracing technique to get portraits accurate sometimes. It's important to have fun when creating art. Tracing does help the muscle memory as well. I'm really grateful that you included it in your video instead of bashing it.

Same, If you need to trace your reference than so be it. Who cares how you got the end result. Just as long as you don’t start tracing other peoples art and calling it your own. That’s a no-no everywhere.

I almost always freehand it although I find it helps to study basic anatomy and draw dimensions of the portrait as shapes that aren’t quite visible to help me out when it comes to shading. To be completely honest at least half of what I know about art is a combination of tips I’ve learnt from KZbin artists and that is what I find works for me.
@ohhmangos

Same here! A friend told me to look around the room and point out what shape(s) various things could have, and when I did she said "that's how you can start out sketching, you draw those shapes-- the rest comes together after that." Still the best tip I have ever received.

When I started portraits, I was taught freehanding the entire drawing, but I was never completely satisfied with my results. The proportions were a hit or miss and I always drew the eyes too big. The grid method has been a life saver and restored my confidence in rendering portraits that actually look like the reference lol. Love this video!

Everyone is going to hate my method but for portrait (I’ve been striving for hyper realism) - I literally go feature by feature. I will completely finish one feature before I move on to the next - complete shading and all. From eye to cheek bone etc. IMO it’s a really fun way to go about realism sketches.

I use the "hard" and "tracing" method for my digital art. I have a semi-realism art style,so i use references MOSTLY for general shapes and locations for features. But tracing references, especially for face shapes im not familiar with, really helps me learn how to draw them as accurately as possible while keeping my style. Tracing for learning purposes is great!! Ive learned more from tracing than any other method. i heavily suggest artists use it whenever you're having difficulties or trying something new :)

As a senior citizen, I now use the easy method with a window or my glass table with a gooseneck lamp underneath. During my middle age, I used a projector. When I was a teen and in my twenties, I did great freehand. So I started with the difficult and have now ended up with the easy method.
@kglistless

I started with free-hand. I think I was good at it. I didn't know what the grid method was until I was late into high school. Then I switched to grid because it was more accurate. Unfortunately the grid method gave me the most anxiety. I wasn't using separate paper to transfer later. I'd just do it in my sketchbook, and erase grid lines as I went. I started a portrait back in 2010 that I still can't bring myself to go back and finish, even though it looks fine. I think I overwhelmed myself because I mixed the detail phase in. Basically, I'd go box by box, sketching, then doing the details, before moving on to the next box. I've worked purely in grey scale for years. Now that I have access to digital art, I work in color. Since I'm learning how color works, I started tracing because I wanted to move on. But it also gave me a great case of imposter syndrome. I love making art. But it's pure anxiety for me. I need to fix that.

I've only used the "easy" method twice with charcoal and I used it for school projects with light. It's easy and fast but it doesn't help me learn to draw. Sometimes I do a drawing motion above the reference just so that I can see how my hand should move and then I try that motion on paper. I've never tried the grid method. I thought of trying it out but it just seem like it takes a lot of time. So, I've been using the "hard" method and it's helped me improve my drawing skill. It helps me understand shapes and dimension.

I usually draw over the reference picture but only with base shapes (triangle for the nose, oval for the eyes), and then I make the gridlines and draw the base shapes, then I refine the features free hand and sometimes trace them directly when I’m not able to get it right (rarely though). I’ve tried doing the whole sketch free hand with reference points as well, however the features often came out wonky and I’d almost always have to trace it at the end. Great video as always Temi!!

I usually freehand any art I do, but I also enjoy the grid method from time to time, especially if I am bringing the picture I want to a bigger scale for the paper I am using. The grid method helps me with getting ratios correct for making a drawing bigger (or smaller) opposed to when I make it the same size as the reference. If it is the same size I just freehand what I can see and clean it up as I go.

Temi thank you so much for bringing up the topic of tracing certain references. I had a pretty ignorant debate w/ a few people earlier this year about this. & I’ll tell y’all now, I’ve only spoken w/ ONE professional artist who said they don’t ever trace. But that artist’s style was that super scratchy sketchy look. The whole point of that style is NOT to be perfect. But every other professional artist I’ve ever met/spoken to has admitted they trace things more often than not & how embarrassing it felt to admit it. But i don’t think it should be an embarrassing topic. & here’s why I think this: I use the tracing method just about every time I draw. B/c even if I don’t use a reference & the drawing is 100% my own unique picture, I still have to trace it in order to transfer it to my toned paper. (I NEVER sketch/draw an imperfect/incomplete drawing on my toned paper b/c every time you erase, you’re taking away all the layers of the paper that you need to layer the pencil ITSELF) So either way I’m more than likely tracing something. When it comes to tracing a reference photo of some sort, obviously don’t go tracing someone else’s ENTIRE drawing w/o their permission. Maybe if you’re just doing it for fun b/c you REALLY wanna draw the EXACT SAME picture someone else drew, just b/c it’s THAT good & you can’t imagine it looking any other way, & you just wanna color it & keep it for yourself to look at, that’s more than likely fine. I still always ask out of respect b/c that’s what I would want in return. But that 99% of artists that I spoke about in the first paragraph, will use 3, 5, 8 or more different references to shape an OUTLINE, & then turn it into their OWN. THAT’S what we mean when we talk about tracing. I’ll see a picture of a person, & man do I LOVE their face shape/shape of their jaw. It’s perfect. So I outline the head/face. But In this other picture I really like the hairstyle. So I’ll get the OUTLINE of that hairstyle. I have my own style of eyes i like to draw so I’ll go ahead & add that myself. But earlier I seen this picture w/ a super cute outfit that would go SO WELL w/ this drawing. I think the sweater & skirt are cute, but I think I’m going to make the skirt plaid instead of denim. & obviously at the end you color that drawing whatever you want the colors to be. So yes, tracing ISN’T “cheating,” it doesn’t mean you “aren’t a good artist.” It isn’t something to be ashamed of or embarrassed about. & you know what? Even if it was…WHO. FREAKING. CARES. Art is meant to be fun. A hobby. A passion. A calling. A form of meditation for some people. Something you just love to do & it’s for nobody else but YOU. ❤️ I apologize for this long comment, but I think a lot of people need to hear this.

Step two - trace! I have the student trace the drawing and then draw over their tracing to add detail and shading. Step three - draw it yourself a second time! This time the student draws just by looking again but this time they have the muscle memory of the tracing and they refer to the structure and placement. For this step I might even use a grid but only as a visual reference. I find grid work is difficult to teach because people focus on squares and lose vision of the entire image! I find that the ‘draw-trace-draw’ method can encourage first time artists because it gives them confidence to try again and keep trying. Then it’s just practice practice practice practice practice practice…. You get the idea 🎨💜

Great pic. I am mostly freehand with A LOT. of erasing. I sometimes erase half of it the next day to make corrections, sometimes I just start over

I am a big fan of the grid method. It helps a lot especially if you get too frustrated with free handing. Tracing never really helped me, it always looked weird….Great video btw!

I use freehand w/ reference points, sometimes tracing the most difficult parts. It sometimes does get annoying bc it shows how off everything else can be but at the same time I like the freedom that comes with it

Thank you so much, this video was very helpful! I agree about your idea on tracing. As a realism artist myself, tracing is very helpful to get the correct proportions and spacing of the sketch. I do not believe that it is cheating because you are still putting in technical skill into the drawing. Anyways, the video was great and very helpful! 😁
