Just as a heads-up the Arteza seem to have a protective coating that you need to sharpen out before use. They aren't prisma buttery, but they're a decent dupe for much less. (Outside of the US, I think Prismas are much cheaper in their homeland).

Prsima colors are cheap in the art world, polychromos are mor expensive but oil based and harder to layer and blend but everything else it better (especially for realism!) caran dache luminance are the most expansive and are waxed based like prisma color, but has a higher percentage of oil and it harder. I have all 3 brands (120 polychromos, 72 prismas, 12+20 luminance) i find prsimas are the worst quality (not on paper) and break super easily and are hard to sharpen and have ultra smooth finishes (sometimes too smooth in realism) and superior layering and blending, luminance it is easy to sharpen, they blend extremely well and is able to have fine details unlike polychromos. Polychromous are harder to blend (if not used right), has not the best white pencil but is superior for holding its point and fine details, and sharpens super easily, polychromos are very ideal for ultra realism In ranking i would put a close 1. Polychromos 2.luminance 3. Prisma

The Arteza cores are just a harder led. Not all wax colored pencils are the same. There is a range between softness and hardness. A harder core allows for more small details because it doesn't break or crumble. These two sets are good companions, Prismacolor for the base layers and Arteza for the details.

This is a great video - thanks for the information. I have both of these sets, and yes, I like them a lot. But, I'm always on the fence about them. I don't trust the lightfastness of Arteza (based on reviews and my own experience with them) ... To be honest, Prismacolor has never given any evidence of their lightfastness - or how they derived at this conclusion. For some people, this is not important at all; especially if you're just starting out. I'm a professional folk artist, and I sell my work, so it's key for me. But, on another note, the colors in both sets are glorious, and I think they're great for work that you plan to sell prints of (and save your originals). That being said, I'm sticking with my Polychromos, which I had to buy open stock to build up my set lol ... All in all, I've watched you make magic happen with the best and the worst of colored pencils. Thank You so much for sharing.

I think when it comes to selecting brands it's down to personal preference because i love Arteza pencils on smooth paper and i can achieve nice effects with it . i think it is a really good mid-range brand of pencil. if you are a person that dislikes wax blooms and tacky textures i would not recommend - however if you a hobbyist or a broke artist (like me) these pencils are leaps and bounds better than your crayolas, castle arts and marco raffines. you can see that they can achieve beautiful gradients and are pigmented and lightfast. They will always be near and dear to my heart as the first colouring pencil set of mine that the white pencil actually had an impact on my art !! 😂😂
