Many of the rural township and village fire departments have a high percentage of volunteers. Line officers such as chief, deputy chief and captains in Pennsylvania are permitted to have red lights and sirens on their personal vehicles as they may be responding from home or their work place. When fighting brush fires and forest fires adjacent to occupied dwellings and industrial areas it is common practice to use the ladder trucks and snorkels to set up a water curtain to protect the roofs and a water screen down wind to protect against airborne embers spreading the fire.

As a Lt in A rural fire department when you have a large brush fire your going to need help , not only man power but water resources . A lot of people don’t realize rural areas don’t have fire hydrants , you have to pull water from rivers or streams or ponds . A lot of these fire trucks are coming to bring water. People don’t realize but brushfires can spread extremely rapidly and are extremely hard to put out. A few years ago in North Carolina we had a large brushfire involved nine different fire departments and I would guess around 30 to 40 different fire apparatus and probably around 3 to 400 firefighters. Most of them were volunteers. In rural areas you have to run water shuttles code 3 back and forth to water supply points . During this massive brush fire we even had a large fuel tanker truck brought out to the scene to keep the fire trucks running and to supply fuel to the trucks shuttling water . It took several days of constant fire suppression and then having to overhaul all the burned brush to find hot spots . We had firefighters so tired that groups of us literally laid down on a tarp to catch some sleep while others kept battling the blaze . People just doing realize how physically exhausting fighting brush fires are .
@davidcox30762 жыл бұрын
Living in the country we were very aware of this. No water lines = no hydrants. Once a field catches and the slightest breeze and fire is everywhere. The one time we did have to call the rural volunteers, they got there in time to kill it with one tanker and a couple of brush trucks. Really did a great job.
@soonerstatefirephotography2 жыл бұрын
My Dept. has Brush Trucks with platforms and cages, so a smallish grass fire in the field is pretty easy. Once it spreads to the trees, it's a real pain tho.

Here in Pennsylvania a brush fire is the worst thing anyone could want to appear because we have such dense vegetation and 99% of PA is full of thick wooded areas with a lot of wildlife that would get displaced or killed so it's best to not let fires get out of control like what happens in California constantly. A wildfire would be very disastrous because our state isn't equipped with aerial firefighting vehicles , the forestry department has a few helicopters but they're not all over PA.

I'm curious. I read the fire was at the Philadelphia Airport. How big was it (in estimated acreage)? I'm asking, because I find it odd that so many engines and aerials responded, but very few brush trucks and (if I'm not mistaken) zero tankers. Are there just no out-of-the-way places, up there, with inadequate public water supply?
@temjr091703 жыл бұрын
The fire was massive. No idea about acreage. That county does not have many brush trucks. They had one tanker, Squrt 67 is a tanker. I’m not exactly sure of the last question
@medicineman3603 жыл бұрын
@@temjr09170 lol. It took me a bit to figure out what I was trying to say with that last question, myself. I THINK I was asking, do they just not have any need for tankers up there? Are all/most areas adequately covered with good water supply?
@johnwick6088 Жыл бұрын
The area this was at was in Delaware County Pa directly next to the back end of the Philadelphia Airport. There wasn't any tankers aside from Squirt 67 for 2 reasons. One was because there was hydrants close by and a lot of engines to relay, and two because tankers are really uncommon around there because there is almost a hydrant on every block almost. As for brush trucks, the main reason why there were so many engines and not a lot of brush trucks is because large brush fires are rare in that area. Usually the biggest brush fire is some mulch in front of a store catching fire due to a cig or high heat. Also it's a really rough calculation but the area of the fire was roughly 90 Acres and was close to either shifting towards a residential area or jumping the road and spreading onto the Airport property. I know it's 2 years late but if you still use this account, I hope the answers clear your prior confusion. @@medicineman360

Engines can do so much more than what a brush truck can do , they're used mostly because of their onboard water tender and capability of high pressure attack lines and the deck gun on top which can spray out large amounts of water over a long distance and the engines can pump water from a drop tank from a tanker.
