In the Temne community in Sierra Leone when a Muslim dies after three, seven or forty days they have a wake where these singers who sing inspirational songs about life and death are hired. They both entertain and preach.

The name Temne means in the Temne language "to fight" Teem or teemne......No wonder the Koya and Konkay, Gbambali Temnes are ferocious fighters against the Manes or today Mende. That is why vast parts of Moyamba are dominated by Temne and dialects of Temne like Shaybra or today Sherbro or Bullom..... a language which is a tumble-up version of the Temne language and speakers scattered along the coastal fishing villages on the Atlantic Ocean of Sierra Leone north and south of the Freetown peninsula.....
