Temperance: Tarot Meaning Deep Dive

I also used to think of Temperance as a bit boring or restrictive until I saw the Temperance card of the Shadow Scapes Tarot. A woman is holding a sphere with the YinYang Symbol in it, but from each side a dragon is emerging and they are flying and spiralling around each other in a - what I call it - storm of Temperance. So having balance doesn’t mean you have to play it low all the times, you can go big in both ways and still achieve balance.

I think everyone has those cards we jump straight to when looking at a new deck - and for me, Temperance is one of my most important. I love this card and if I find I don’t connect with how it’s represented then the deck loses something for me.

That was terrific, thank you very much Kate. The older I get, the more I realise how important balance is. I'm sure you will have noticed this too (there was a lot to describe about this card), but the water between the cups seems perhaps to represent balancing the things within our control, while one food in the pond and one on the ground perhaps represents balancing the things we cannot control - the natural progression of the universe beyond our ken. Just something I notice while watching your excellent video - again, thank you!

I was reading Mircea Eliade's "The Forge and the Crucible" recently, which traces the history of alchemy back to ancient metallurgy. As a tarot nerd, the discussion of the "tempering" of metals brought this card to mind. It made me think this card might contain the idea of having been tested by extremes (perhaps in the previous Hanged Man and Death cards) and now coming out stronger than ever before, an interpretation which vibes well with the "healing" interpretation of this card, but adds an extra dimension for me. (PS I love this series!)

This is absolutely my favorite card in the deck. I once did an exercise found in Mary K. Greer's book, Tarot for Yourself, where she has you enter the card and speak with "the Healing Angel". It was a very beautiful experience. Also, I have read some sources that say Temperance represents AA Michael - "with the sun on his head and who stands on the sea and the land" - Rev. 10:1-2 Great video! Thank you!

Last thing, it's funny you mentioned the cups in the angels hands, giving and reciving. This morning on the 14th, I had a dream that I was able to move objects with my hands without touching them. When I seen the illustrations of this card just now, it reminded me of my dream. Maybe it was realigning my spiritual and practical energy. The energy being the magic and practical being the objects being as on to demonstrate action through energy manifesting movement through focused and balanced energy. Sorry I've typed so much. Marcus Aurelius said that "nothing earthly succeds without heaven and nothing heavenly succeds without Earth." Also, I've wondered what the gold crown in the background represents.

i’m enjoying binge watching this series so much, and this video actually helped me understand temperance in a possibly inadvertent way - i wonder if temperance actually does have a darker side than just being a bit boring. it’s good to rebalance and return to ourselves, but maybe taking the middle path can itself go to the extreme. for example, that word “moderation” makes me think of the role that “moderate” political beliefs can play in the rise of more tyrannical empires or regimes by standing for nothing or refusing to stand in the way.

It's so weird. Today is October 14th, 2022 at 11:53 p.m so somewhat allready proceeding into the tarot of the Devil, and I must say, the 14th energy is very mystical and spiritual. I felt very in tuned with my emotions today. Almost as if I was in existence between reality and a dream. I was very comfortable in my own skin, just a little overindulgent today with food. But I felt, very mellow and serene, yet grounded in a way. Like I wasn't afraid to step out of my comfort zone. As if I have a spiritual backbone or blanket of some sort of confidence and guidance.

This has been such a helpful explanation of this card. I love your comments about pleasure, which have some support from the current thinking neuroscience! In her book, Dopamine Nation, Dr. Anna Lembke describes the long-term problems created by our constant pleasure seeking and how we are eventually incapable of pleasure. It seems like one of those instances where we finally have some scientific understanding and evidence for the gut instincts, intuition, and wisdom of women. Your explanations always resonate with me. Practicing moderation in all things can be suicidal. Sometimes circumstances demand that you make an all-out effort to fight off threatening influences. Or when you are competing in a sports event, for example, you usually need to make a 100 percent effort to come out ahead. Practicing moderation in all things is extremely immoderate.

I pulled this card with the question in mind of whether I should ever have children. I'm a huge fence-sitter about that, although lately I'm more drawn to the childfree side. I have picked up and put down tarot throughout my life many times. This time though I think it is time. I've been trying to figure out where I fall in the fools journey. And I had it hit me today like a lighting bolt... Temperance. And I find that funny because temperance has been the card I've struggled with figuring out what's going on in the picture. And that makes sense now. It's hard to see the mess when you're in the middle of it.

Yeah but a lot of knowledge in those cars that you're very very good my question was I was going to go to the casino again and I've lost a couple times and then the temperance came out as my first card which would mean the present tarot card spread the hold 10 cards anyway so it was like an image your present so I still confused I don't know if it's telling me I should go if I shouldn't so I'm probably not going to go now I haven't been winning so I was just asking if I should go tomorrow have a chance to win the forever bus ride but you know I didn't know if it was going to be my lucky day and I still don't know I'm I'm still confused I'm trying really hard to learn these cars but they are confusing

9:58 At this moment, I was struck by an idea. Select the Temperance card and place face up in the center of the table. Ask or think the question: "What areas in my life need this?" While you shuffle, then select cards to place around the Temperance card. I suppose this may be 6 to 8 cards, but however many seem good to you. I'm just a beginner, though. There are probably already spreads for this.
