Thanks, that information should be taught at schools and by teachers. It would have made my life much easier if I had known that when I first started playing. Good job! Even with its little problems, the guitar is the best!

I find young people like to share their vast knowledge immediately; you on the other hand have some years and wonderful wisdom that you share with such gentleness and open heart. I am much older than you, have a degree in music and studied equal temperament and the like at great length. Admire you for all you do.

During the renaissance, lute frets used to be spaced unequally to improve the intonation. That is also my solution in one of my guitars, the drawback is that some keys and notes are unplayable, but major tenths sound brilliantly pure. Every temperament has its drawbacks, including the universally applicable but somewhat mushy-sounding 'equal temperament'.

Thanks rabuzappa! Very interesting and useful info. Anyone who has played a fretted instrument for a while must come to understand the problems with intonation. You explain it very well. I just purchased a digital tuner (highly recommended Snark-1) which I will use to learn more about this problem. I must say, the digital tuner is quick and very accurate--a must have for guitar players, especially because it is visual, you don't have to tell everyone to be quiet while you tune up. I will be able to tune to true pitch each note in a given chord form--your suggestion about eliminating the third makes sense. I want to check/compare the digital exact tone method with correct "ear" tuning. Thanks again.

My solution is: always replace D with D9 and A with A9 or even A9/maj7 . Also at chord G i replace the B with a D (3rd fret) . So i made my way around it without ever knowing, why it sound better to me :) . Great explained btw!

by the way, on electric guitar, i seemed always to kinda bend out of tune... and then i realized i probably bend the notes to the "right" notes that are a few cents off the scale, but fits nice in the current harmony...

tune to "3rd-less" E and A, and deal with the rest. Short of a "true temperament" style fingerboard, I think this is the best advise out there. Thank you.

Thanks for this video. I am playing now for many years and always struggled with myself, since mainly G strings seems always to be out of tune. Open D-Cord vs. open C or G. I always tried to compensate by ear in the Cord, but never got satifyable results. Now I know why and can work with this information. I always thougt it is only caused by my guitar (cause it is a cheap one). Know I know it itsn't. Thanks so much.

Because guitars are made to be tuned in equal temperament that is what has to be done. Here is a tuning guide from *The Guild of American Luthiers* that i think everyone needs to read. Make sure you read the part under "PROCEDURE" . drkevguitar.com/2012/04/04/tuning-data-sheet-45/

Electronic tuners are okay, but they won't tune your guitar correctly. I have spent a fortune on tuners and eventually, I realised my ear is far more sensitive and better at hearing discrepancies. As Martin Taylor says; you have to be a bit out of tune to be in tune. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ep2WnpZ-nt10ga8 Don't despair, you aren't alone in this :)

@freezazoid I believe there was a misunderstanding here. I was simply agreeing that he is saying that one should not use harmonics to tune their guitar, and that he is saying many other things. I meant no offense whatsoever! I can help explain some music theory if you're curious.

Don't use 7th fret harmonics to tune. They give true 5ths. A guitar needs the slightly flattened 5ths of equal temperament

So the lesson is ..use 3rdless chords to tune so all major open forms are equally in tune ..? makes sense I found that through many years of trial and error but forget it sometimes..ach even with a guitar with Evertune and true temperament id probably find it out of tune with my super sensitive ears lol

I always struggled with things like A major on the guitar really hard, because the C# on B string sounds so out of tune all the time... Generally all the barre shaped major chords are kinda horrible there...

I knew it! Something was wrong with piano and guitar tunings, sometimes they sound so out of tune, but I learned to ignore my feelings and keep playing. Oh my. Are there any instruments, that don't distort intervals?

Well demonstrated sir! But careful you don't get into a tuning fuddle... And as a result, don't play any music 'cause it's all a compromise... I think we need to remember Hendrix at this point who was barely in tune - just/even/true or otherwise at the best of times... But none the less sounded great! PS your top cutaway reminds me of Pat Meth's Ibanez model...

I get the concept. Guitars aren't really ever in tune. But does it matter? If every guitar is a little out of tune, then they're all in tune😉
