지난 해, 폭풍처럼 가요계에 등장한 템페스트는 1년 동안 3장의 미니 앨범을 발매하며 글로벌 K-POP 팬들에게 깊은 인상을 남겼다. 또한 음악방송 1위는 물론 각종 시상식에서 신인상을 휩쓸고, 글로벌 대형 무대 라인업에도 이름을 올리는 등 괄목할 만한 성적을 거두었다. 하지만 그럼에도 불구하고 템페스트와 이들의 활약에 대한 걱정 어린 시선과 우려 가득한 목소리는 점점 커져갔다. 그래서 템페스트는 다짐했다. 우리를 향해 쉼 없이 몰아치는 폭풍우를 즐기며, 우리의 가치를 제대로 증명하기로.
있는 그대로의 템페스트를 고스란히 담은 네 번째 미니 앨범 〈폭풍전야〉는 ‘폭풍 시리즈’의 서막을 알리는 앨범으로, 이 앨범에서 템페스트는 ‘휘몰아치는 시련에도 굴하지 않고 꿋꿋이 나아가는 청춘의 모습’을 ‘폭풍’으로 설정했다. “우리만의 방식으로 우리 앞에 놓인 시련과 불안을 잠재우겠다”는 멤버들의 의지는 한 치의 망설임도 없이 폭풍우를 뚫고 나아가는 젊은 에너지와 더해져 폭풍전야의 적막을 깨부순다.
거센 폭풍이 휘몰아치기 전의 고요함을 ‘폭풍전야’에 빗댄 앨범 〈폭풍전야〉는 템페스트가 등장해 씬을 뒤집기 직전의 상황을 묘사한다. 소용돌이 치는 청춘의 에너지로 중무장한 템페스트는 주무기인 ‘청량 + 펑키’ 콘셉트와 파워풀하고 자유분방한 퍼포먼스를 앞세워 한층 짙어진 컬러를 선보인다. 이번 앨범 역시 멤버 LEW와 화랑이 작사에 참여했으며, 더욱 묵직하고 화려해진 랩핑으로 템페스트의 패기와 에너지에 힘을 보탰다.
펑크 댄스 장르의 타이틀곡 ‘난장(Dangerous)’은 고요한 씬을 휩쓸 폭풍이 되어 일순간에 무대를 뒤집는 위험한 존재가 되겠다는 템페스트의 포부를 담은 곡이다. 매 앨범 탄탄한 서사를 자랑하는 그룹답게 ‘난장(亂場)’이라는 우리 고유의 정서에 템페스트만의 이야기를 더해 가사로 표현했는데, “자꾸만 어쩌니 저쩌니 / 훈수 두는 Enemies”, “전부 뒤집어볼까 / Make a 난장판 / No one ever surrender” 등 템페스트의 방식 대로 직설적이고 유쾌하게 풀어낸 이야기는 리스너들의 이목을 집중시키기에 충분하다.
