Speaking for myself, one of the reasons I love this song so much is because for those of us wo have been through some troubles ourselves - including a fair bit of gaslighting in one form or another, we get a bit of vicarious catharsis ourselves. Not only is it musically masterful, it resonates on a personal level also - most of Ren's music is like that. Would love to hear you do re-takes on earlier reactions. You add so much by explaining the way the arrangement and music works to evoke certain feelings and emotions.

The more I watch this, the more I step away from the 'venting' focus and appreciate the expertly crafted compositional elements, set choice, and cinematography. Not to mention Ren's scripting, lyrics and overall performance. I particularly like how he incorporated the Choir, as also symbolically 'killed' by Kujo, who ripped off their work and sold it - illegally - to Ren. The genesis of all this angst. { Someone said Ren had independently contacted the Bulgarian Choir directly and made some arrangement with them to pay for their work. That does sound Very REN! } ❤

Yes, by far the angriest. He has some songs where he shows some kind of general anger about society (MG1-3), new beginnings (Masochist), but this whole Kujo story was "inspiring " on a different level. Before I'd call Sick Boi his angriest song, that shows his disappointment with the medical industry and greed not only in the medical but music industry and society as well.

This video is a little unusual as Ren was the sole director (he usually co-directs). He was also the music producer, songwriter, and mixed & mastered the track. He also released an instrumental version. Samuel Perry-Falvey was the D.P. Josh Stiles was Assistant Director. Samuel and Josh work with Ren often. Luke Flegg is another filmmaker that Ren works with. You might want to watch their video, "Murderer," which glimpses another musical style from Ren and a dope video. Actually, there are two equally awesome versions; while I'd recommend the official music video (w/studio audio) first, the acoustic video has a fun homage guitar riff in it. And, no, I don't think Ren has expressed himself this angry in music before.

Ren is such a nice guy, by most everybody’s account, so this kind of diss track is unique in his catalogue. He did one about King Dotta, in response to things Dotta had said about Ren, but finished it off with a very conciliatory tone, urging his fans to like and subscribe to Dotta, making Dotta a friend for life. That’s how Ren usually works. Kujo got what he deserved, and Ren has earned everybody’s respect, language notwithstanding. 😀

Not sure if you'd seen and I missed you mentioning it in the vid about the reason Ren made this song but this is I think the angriest we've ever seen Ren because Kujo and his girlfriend tried to basically steal Sick Boy from him. Other spots of Ren being angry were mostly either frustration like in Sick Boy or playing a part like he did in the Screech portion of that song. Cliff notes are that Ren bought the beat for Sick Boy from Kujo with an unlimited use license, Sick Boy proceeds to blow up and then Kujo decides he deserves more. Kujo then goes on to copyright claim the Sick Boy video and him and his girlfriend both make all kinds of trash talk posts about Ren. It's absolutely mind blowing to me that Ren gave an easy layup to Kujo and offered to do a full 50/50 collab on another song to remove the claim on Sick Boy and Kujo turned him down, hence the line "the killing you're committing is career suicide"

Renvenge! There was some anger in Sick Boi - he threw a chair & overturned a table. He did a mild diss of King Dotta - as much funny as angry - & then took pity on him. He acted out Screech's anger in Screech's Tale but this is true, pushed-to-his-limit, righteous anger. BTW I read elsewhere that Kujo posted that he listened to the music-only version. He said something like, the music is dope without your weak ass words on top of it. Does anyone think this absolute 5-watt has learned anything at all?!

Both reactions to the song and the background story have been excellent. Thanks! There are two things that struck me about the video--first that there are call outs to Ren's better nature, and his attempts to resolve things positively ("hate breeds hate" and "nothing to be gained when you sever the neck") showing that the anger is a last ditch response of frustration. Second, the rope analogy that is verbalized at the start is carried out in the "justifying instrumentation"--Ren pays out that rope several times, then uses the instrumentation to "pull the rope tight" in the contrasting sections when he specifically addresses Kujo.

He’s pretty angry when he plays Screech’s part (and Stevie’s) in The Tales, but that’s just a story and he’s obviously playing a fictional character. He’s also pretty angry in the song Masochist, which turned some of his fans off to him when it first released, but it felt more generalized and less personal. And there was less explicit language in it, though most of Ren’s songs use at least some explicit language, to varying degrees..

It's definitely the angriest I've ever seen and he doesn't usually use language like that. Any anger I've seen before is usually part of a fictional story, like in Violet's Tale. Usually, he educates, but doesn't seem angry. He did say that he thought about what someone could say about his girlfriend or a loved one would offend him, and chose to use that to get under Kujo's skin. It’s hard to ignore the word “kill” in the song which is said at least 50 times, not to mention variations of it like “killer” and “murderer” sprinkled in as well. Having said that the song itself doesn’t FEEL violent to me. Perhaps it’s the lack of the strings that are present in Beat Down that you mention that really get the blood flowing.
