Time-lapse video showing the construction of a WSDOT-owned bailey-style bridge over a structurally-deficient bridge in Thurston County, south of Olympia. The bailey-style bridge provides temporary local access along Littlerock Road until a permanent replacement bridge is complete. Both WSDOT state and Thurston County crews worked as one to make this job a success. The time-lapse video was shot by WSDOT crews over three days.

Built several, no heavy equipment, just us combat engineers, at Fort Leonard Woodrow, Mo. fall of 1971. Amazing to be part of the crew. Tank drove over it after. 120' gap.

"When you refer to Bailey crap I take it you mean that glorious, precision-made, British-built bridge which is the envy of the civilized world?"

Also a 12B here, built 'em by hand and saw some in Iraq in 2004 that were permanently set up and had to have been there since WWII - still going strong after almost 70 years! 👍

We used to build these in Germany while in the Army assigned to the 249th Engineer Battalion.. We could put 100 ft of Bailey Bridge across an open deep creek with out the benefit of having an existing bridge to roll it across.. It's designed to slide across the expanse like a desk drawer to the other side, and if you have done the job correctly, it will not sage before it gets to the other side.. It takes about 50 guys to do this, and a little diesel power....

Built the Bailey Bridge, in Ft Campbell Ky. 27th Engineer Battalion (C) in 1958. Combat Engineer training. If needed it could be built by hand with no heavy equipment. There was another bridge bigger than the Bailey but I don't remember the name. A crane was needed.

A single troop of Royal Engineers in the 70s would have that done in a morning; built by hand. S/S: S/D: S/T: -- D/S: D/D: D/T: -- T/S: T/D: T/T: Fascinating bridge.

Right now we need a few dozen of these here in British Columbia as the road bridges have all be washed away by massive floods.

The bridge underneath did not mean a thing as the Bailey bridge was self supporting due to the raised nose on the first section and was counter balanced on the launching rollers. john 339 squadron RE

WWII Bailey bridges remain in use worldwide. If not replaced by new construction this one can serve a very long time. IMO it could have been wiser to spec a "permanent" version as produced by Mabey and others. They are also easily repaired should it be necessary.

It is unbelievable how much standing around those people did in that video. A waste of our tax dollars sadly. Nice bridge though.

Installation of these types of bridges requires muscle and not a lot of machine. Nearly all of the work is done by hand, which means more people are needed. In the video, you can also see crew members assisting in spotting those who are bolting and physically pushing the bridge. During installation, some work groups need to physically wait for others to be finished before they can do their portion of the project. This installation also served as a training opportunity for other members of WSDOT and crews from Thurston County so they can effectively install a bridge in their area of responsibility. In addition to those observing for training purposes, we had members of the media and other guests watch the installation. They're not assisting the actual installation work, but are present on the video.
