Not sure one a year for five years with a sixth one thrown in is "ridiculous", but I know most artists/bands ended up doing a covers album (UB40 ended up doing nothing else) and/or a live album. Monty Python even did an album called "The Contractual Obligation Album". None of this excuses these albums though. When the artists themselves slag them off, you know they are bad. I'm just glad I hadn't heard of most of them.

I agree. Side 2 has some good songs. Even Dancer on Side 1 is not too bad for a funky rocky view. Production wise although few people like the synths, Brian guitars sounds pretty good and Freddie's voice is on good form. There was a record review website run by 'Capn Fantastic' many years ago and he rated albums with an A to F rating. He gave Hot Space a C minus, which I thought was accurate. Andy Edwards too did a video on albums not as bad as their reputation suggests , and he listed Hot Space as one of them.

They all have produced more than two albums where I loved every single song. You can drop the needle on the vinyl and forget about it until it is time to flip the record over. I could also add Joe Walsh to the fore mentioned mix if allowed to exclude all of the Eagles albums that don't include him. I am a Stephen Stills' fan and enjoy much of his catalog. I bought "Thoroughfare Gap" when it was released and thought the album was far from his best. Stills has a soulful voice that is not enhanced by the heavy production and background singers that this album includes. The standout track is "Thoroughfare Gap": among the best he has ever written.
@davebowman649713 күн бұрын
Haven't dived into the lyrics, but musically Thoroughfare Gap is a boring almost endless repetition of a bog standard three-chord verse. Don't get me wrong - there are excellent songs on that formula (exhibit A: Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues, exhibit B: WILCO's Kidsmoke), but Thoroughfare Gap isn't one. And the production has that sound of the late 70s and 1980s that makes my stomach rumble uncomfortably.

Frank Zappa is the biggest load of garbage I've ever heard. Frank Zappa can make an album of pure musical nonsense- radio jingles, slide whistles, 10 minute off key guitar solos and other assorted crap (often off key of course in case any average listener might actually find it catchy and make Zappa inadvertently commercially successful) with deep lyrical content like Don't Eat The Yellow Snow, Jewish Princess and Burnt Weenie Sandwich, or badly dated satire. And because he has the reputation of being an eccentric genius, people at least grudgingly say they at least respect his music because they feel it must be deep. But it's okay to slam Hot Space as garbage or an abomination because it sounds too funky for a 70s Queen fans taste. Whatever. No actually I tell a lie. Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart is much worse than any Zappa album.

If it makes you feel better, The 80s were cruel to virtually every previously great 70s band or artist. Black Sabbath, Genesis, Rush, Yes and others. Judas Priest to a degree as well. I'm a huge fan of 70s era Black Sabbath but after Dio left I don't think I've managed to sit through an 80s Sabbath album. the punk bands lost their way, or sold out like The Damned. Phil Collins and Peter Gabriel virtually abandoned their prog roots and went mainstream. Solo artists Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell, Mick Jagger. Probably worst of all was Bowie.

@@John-k6f9k Yeah, you're right. Even Joni Mitchell, of all people, started using nothing but synthesizers and samplers on her Dog Eat Dog album in 1985. Basically, the 80's took the heart and soul out of music, and, in many ways, rock'n'roll and popular music has never really recovered.

@@richalderson6069 In defense of the 80s it did produce some great new authentic gritty heavy metal, at least in the early 80s. Iron Maiden, Metallica, Saxon as well as more extreme stuff like Venom,. And there were new proggy bands like Marillion. It's not like I hate the 80s stuff of the 70s bands, it's just that they generally seem much less creative. I can understand their desire to move with the times. Just consider classical composers too. In the 1800s hardly anyone was using harpsichords, organs or choral works like JS Bach and Handel, they were using the more modern piano and such. Freddie definitely wanted to move with the times, thus we got Hot Space. And by the way The Game is likely my second favorite Queen album. I just like the sparse, rhythmic, heavy sound of it.

I don't own a lot of vinyl, but that John Fogerty "Eye of the Zombie" is one I got from my flatmate for 50p in around 1991 and still own - I still have not got around to playing it... perhaps now I never will!

Like with most of Metallica's albums, St Anger really needed a sub-editor. My own cut on my iTunes has 20 minutes lopped off it.

St Anger needed more work. Every guitarist with a KZbin channel has tried to improve it with better drums, better guitar effects, etc. Every one of them has succeeded.

Had to laugh last year when Jagger praised Trudeau while touring in Canada which drew many boos from the crowd - so he quickly changed the subject to the soccer! 😂

I was about 15 when dirty work came out and it was the first rolling stones album i brought. I thought it was great but after exploring the bands catalogue a bit more i can see why some people didnt like it. It was my introduction to the band and i still have a fondness for it. Lets face it, the stones at their worst are still better than most bands best effort.

The Stones haven't put out a decent record since Tattoo You (1981).
@Thin_Mercury15 күн бұрын
i hesitate to call anything past tattoo you a true stones album. keith was creatively checked out after that album because he was fed up with jaggers obsession with trying to make the band sound contemporary. everything since then has been mick jagger solo albums marketed as the rolling stones, each one has gems, just not consistent as a whole. keiths solo work is much better than any stones album post tattoo you

I love Pilgrim. I love the sound consistent through the whole album. I hear it as an urbane pop version of smooth jazz. The only Clapton album I play more is Layla.

I love thing fish! I even have the triple vinyl. It’s so amazing. Are used to play the CD in my car to and from the golf court every single time I was there in 1988. The will always remind me of that year. I was singing along so much too especially one song that was so catchy.

I disagree with Thingfish. The Synclavier underscoring is fantastic and the broadway pastiche towards the end is beautiful. The Mammy Nuns is a great song!
@ahazybellcord14 күн бұрын
I love Thing-Fish. My biggest gripe is how loud the spoken vocals are mixed compared to the background music, some of which is really incredible like 'Clowns on Velvet'. The lyrical references are maybe easier to make sense of as an American. If you're not familiar with Amos 'n Andy, its significance, and its embroilment with the NAACP, the whole premise of the Thing-Fish character is totally lost. The Kingfish impression places the minstrel show acts of the American past back into the spotlight, making "Harry and Rhonda" very uncomfortable. I can't really argue that this makes it a good album, but it's at least creative and unique. To identify the Mammy Nuns simply as "the working class" is a bit... um, let's be generous and just say some glaring details have been overlooked. I don't necessarily agree with Zappa's subtextual arguments- the conspiratorial theories on AIDS, criticism of the women's liberation movement, etc., but the lyrics are pretty interesting to say the least and there's a lot of great music, albeit some of it buried under the narration. The early experimentation with vocal synthesis is also cool. Let's put it this way: I'd rather listen to The Crab-Grass Baby than anything on Radio K.A.O.S.

The only thing missing from the 80's is a Zappa/Waters collaboration with lyrics by Zappa and music by Waters.

Bought Hot space in the eighties as a teenager. I wondered why it was so cheap and there were so many in the remainder record shop where I found it. I got it home and discovered the answer to both questions. Only redeeming feature is, it has Under pressure on it

Thing-Fish's story is a bit over the top, but just because some songs are recycled, doesn't make great songs like "The Torture (oh wait, Torchem) Never Stops" and "You Are What You Is" suddenly turn into bad songs. I don't listen to Thing-Fish that often, but still like to listen to it more than to some of Zappa's albums made up of Synclavier noodling.

@@BennyTheBall8899 I've been in two minds about The Doors for 40 years. I've alternately liked them and disliked them. They're famously polarizing, or a 'Marmite band' as British say. Love them or hate them, they were extremely original.But yes, I was really shocked at Waiting For The Sun, I think it's awful, except for one or two songs.

@@John-k6f9k I think the mythology around Morrison is ridiculous but I do appreciate the music, especially Ray Manzarek.Funnily enough when I got into them in the early 80s quite a few people who grew up in Britain in the 60s had never heard of them, every now and then they would get a mention in the music press, all this way before that Oliver Stone movie.A marmite band that is spot on.Cheers John.

Thank you for calling out Frank Zappa. For as brilliant as Frank was, there were times throughout his career when he seemed to like the smell of his own farts a little too much, and he was more than willing to take advantage of a rabid fan base that would dish out any amount of money for an album full of him ripping said farts. I must admit that I have never listened to Thing Fish, but I've definitely heard more than one FZ album that was not worth the time.

Many such clunkers can be attributed to either or both of these factors: -The band/performer wants to upgrade themselves by using the latest producer or electronic instruments, etc. But if I put on a shiny white polyester suit, that doesn’t make me John Travolta, it just makes me me in a shiny white polyester suit -Cocaine
