Paranoid Black Sabbath, Stand Up Jethro Tull, Court of the Crimson King, King Crimson, Disraeli Gears Cream, Emerson Lake and Palmer, self titled, Shhhh Ten Years After, Fire and Water Free, H to He Van Der Graaf, Fragile Yes saw them in 1971 before this LP actually came out..but Nursery Cryme is the absolute pinnacle for me

Led Zeppelin- Led Zeppelin (I) Deep Purple - Deep Purple in Rock Van Halen - Van Halen Jimy Hendrix - Are You Experienced (for a first Album it's a Masterpiece, all what made of Hendrix one of the best & most influential guitar player is already thete) Keith Jarrett - Live in Cologne Blue Oyster Cult - Some Enchanted Evening The Clash - London Calling + Sandinista Joy Division - Unknown Pleasures Young Gods - Envoyé (1986) [12" EP, 45 rpm] (1st record they released before their LP in 1987 which didn't include any of the 3 tracks of their EP. Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back And I can't end this short list without adding SRV for his whole work and playing Art. I still can't say if he was better than Hendrix, but he added his unique touch to all the Hendrix's he played on stage. Def. a 🎸God. I didn't include a lot of music styles (Funk, Blues, new or cold wave, electro, Turntablizm, Beatmakers, Pop, Country, etc, etc...), but don't forget that every style has/had its own game changers. #Peace

Great topic and great reflection about what each album meant to you. here are a few of mine: The Beatles - A Hard Day's Night (me at 7 years old, and 1st album that really established them as so much more than a pop band) 1964 The Moody Blues - Threshold of a Dream (my first glimpse of Prog) 1969 The Who - Tommy (Wow, a Rock Opera!) 1969 The Guess Who - Best of the Guess Who (Burton Cummings, Rock's greatest vocalist) 1971 ELP - ELP (my first 'real' prog album) 1971 America - America (Sensational acoustic guitars and vocals) 1972 Yes - Fragile (Exciting new excursions in rock music) 1972 Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells (A whole different world of music) 1973 Genesis - Selling England By the Pound (Genesis quickly became my favorite band) 1974 Supertramp - Crime of the Century 1974 (Eventually became my favorite album of all-time) That's 10, and I'm only up to 1974!

Your very lucky to have a Dad that was into the Classic Prog world and that it gave you insight and a head start on all this Classic music !! I grew up on it as you know Nathan so with every step my older Brother, friends and I got a new delight almost every few months for 10 yrs or so, it was the Best time ever in music and concert going especially in the Boston area where every band went to play with it's many venues and even the surrounding cities were close enough to drive to Providence, RI/ Cape Cod Coliseum/ Springfield, MA/ Hartford & New Haven, CT and of course NYC !! To many albums to list but like you The Beatles first Still going on as a Yout Lol, then Cream, Hendrix, Mountain, Grand Funk, all the Classic great Prog albums from King Crimson/ Yes/ Genesis/ Jethro Tull/ ELP/ Pink Floyd/ Gentle Giant/ Nektar/ Hawkwind/ Greenslade/ Kansas/ Focus/ Roxy Music and the great Classic Rock bands Zeppelin/ Sabbath/ Deep Purple/ Thin Lizzy/ Rush etc Oh and Classic latin & Fusion ... Santana/ Mahavishnu Orchestra/ Return To Forever . Well you get me Nathan Lol 👍🎼🎶

My entry into album music was Elton John "Don't Shoot Me". My entry into Prog album music was "Nursery Chryme ". Discovering "Blomljud " changed my life and opened a whole new adventure for me, with friends sharing a common love from all over the world.

Thanks for sharing. I won't hit ten, but there are definitely a handful that made a big difference for me. 1. Sting - _The Soul Cages_ for helping me navigate a similarly-difficult relationship with my dad. I don't know if I have as much sympathy for my father as Sting does ("Why Should I Cry For You?" is far more sympathetic to Mr. Sumner than a title like that would lead you to believe) 2. Rush - _Farewell to Kings_ was the album that made me fall in love with music. Literally the earliest time I remember in my life that I listened to a song and the song stuck with me and I listened closely and wanted to relisten was hearing "Xanadu" on a family trip to Wisconsin for a reunion. It has shaped my musical tastes in a way no other single album has. 3. dredg - _The Pariah, the Parrot, the Delusion_ came out at a time when I was really going through a transition in terms of my spirituality and belief system and it served as an artistic catalyst for me to think about how I saw the world around me. dredg doesn't have the profile of many other groups (they MIGHT be prog, I guess? half their albums are concept albums), but this record really hit me at a formative time. 4. The Who - _Quadrophenia_ is another one that hit me at the right time in my youth, thinking about what it meant to be a "rebel," and what meaningful rebellion even meant, and as I aged different songs mean different things to me (For instance, now that I'm a teacher, "The Punk and the Godfather" hits SO much different) 5. Le Orme - _Il Fiume_ or "The River" is a mid-90's release from an old-school 70's Italian prog group with a short runtime and a very mellow vibe. I saw it in a record shop in Rome during college at a time when I was kind of falling out of love with music, and it felt spiritual and soulful in a way that music had sort of stopped at that time for me. 6. Genesis - _The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway_ is the one that hit me, too. I like a handful of Genesis albums more, but this baby got me to think and feel, and when life feels rough, I listen to everything Rael goes through, and am given at least some level of inspiration. Talk about a story that redefines perserverence. 7. Lupe Fiasco - _The Cool_ is not even close to my favorite Lupe album. _Food and Liquor, Tetsuo and Youth, Drogas Wave_ and _Drill Music in Zion_ are all superior, but this album is what first got me, a relatively closed-minded white boy who grew up in the 'burbs to treat hip-hop as an art form with respect. I've since really gone back and devoured the greats, from the Roots to the Coup to Jurassic Five, Nas, Immortal Technique, and so many more artists who have expanded my experience of the world and of music beyond what I was comfortable with. Lupe is absolutely an artist in the hip-hop space I'd recommend to prog-heads, by the way. Half of what I listed are hip-hop concept albums, to put things into perspective. 8. Diamond Rio - _Love a Little Stronger_ is a great country/bluegrass disc that reminded me that the country space also has excellent artists worthy of respect. What blew my young mind listening to this baby for the first time was "Appalachian Dream," an instrumental on an album from a mainstream country artist. That'll get my attention twenty years ago, for sure. 9. Mike Oldfield - _Return to Ommadawn_ is not the most well-loved of Oldfield's albums by most people, but it taught me the value of reviewing the places you've been, recontextualizing them, and seeing where you are. For my money, it's his most listenable whole album. Maybe it's the modern production, or the smooth compositional style, but this baby really blew me away, and I still listen to it, front to back, regularly. And I don't have a tenth, 'cause I'm not the one making the video, so I'm allowed to cheat and be lazy!

I love the story of the last selection. I wouldn't say the album had changed my life in a way Haken Aquarius or The Mountain changed my life because I have really had the time to absorb it. However, I would say to go along the lines of your feelings. Sharing new stuff with friends is an amazing feeling and that alone allows our lives to be changed. Oh and The Dear Hunter is very underrated. With Antimai being more accessible to people, I hope people go back and take the time to absorb the Acts. Can't go wrong with the rest of your selections. Classics. I will add that while the Haken and Nospun albums scratch the musical itch, Riverside's new album is hitting the hardest with changing how I see the world. I have a feeling it's going to be one of those generational albums I tell the kids and grandkids how it was in the "good" ole days.

The addition of Nospun's album on my list is probably a bit premature since it is so new, but I was trying to pick an album that represents my current experience since starting my KZbin channel and discovering music through it and in turn getting to recommend that music to others has been life-changing for me. But, there are plenty of choices that I could use that would also represent this well! Haken's The Mountain would probably be on my list if I could pick a few more. It is great to hear the love for The Dear Hunter and Riverside's latest! Can't go wrong with those!

Yes you are right, it is from The Acts Boxed Set! I'm not sure why my dad isn't a Pink Floyd fan! I just remember that I was picking up DSOTM, WYWH, Animals and The Wall on my own while he was showing me Yes and Genesis....I had a friend in high school who would exchange burned cds with me of mostly classic rock, and I think he handed me 'The Wall' at one point, so that was my first exposure to anything Pink Floyd.

I might have bought the Acts Boxed Set, but given I already owned all the albums on Vinyl other than The Fox and the Hunt, so it didn't seem worth it. Cool you got it though. Another question for you, you talked about Incubus. I'm not highly into them, but used to hang out on their fans forum for various reasons (a lot of Kaddisfly fans were there for 1). Anyway, I once brought up Prog to the fans there and 1 or 2 of the people chimed in with a list of like 5 or 6 tracks by Incubus they sort of considered Prog. There is "The Odyssey" from the Halo 2 Soundtrack which to me sounds rather King Crimson-like. But I cannot recall the other tracks they included other than "Sick Sad Little World." Would you know? 1 of them was like a 2-part suite, and another was like "Quicksand" or something. I'd love to know again. Also, there's a weird Kevin Gilbert/Incubus thing with his tune "Miss Broadway." and "Drive." They're basically the same song, same chord progression, etc. Didn't know if you knew.

They were remastered in 2009 on CD along with the rest of the main Beatles catalogue. I have these and the blue and red vinyl versions from 1978

Hey, thanks for checking out my channel! I'm excited for your journey, there is so much great stuff to discover! You are making me want to make a new video where I give a list of tracks to start with for somebody new to the modern Prog scene (in fact, I'm pretty sure I will do this in the future). I've done a lot of different videos on Modern Prog...I've ranked the albums of several of my favorite bands (Spock's Beard, Flower Kings, Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Haken, etc.). I've done several 'top five' countdowns which feature some newer stuff (epics of the 90s, 2000s and 2010s; modern Prog Concept albums, Prog Metal songs). I also do a review every week (on Tuesday) spotlighting what I think are the greatest current releases that are coming out now in Prog...so there are a lot of potential things to look at there. With so many albums across numerous genres in my collection (over 9,000 entries in my database), it would be impossible for me to narrow it down to 10 and cover everything but here are 10 which are important to me. Wings - Band on the Run (my first purchase of an album in 1973), Pink Floyd - A Nice Pair (my first introduction to prog), Genesis - Nursery Cryme (from a recommendation from someone at school to check them out), Steeleye Span - Below the Salt (first folk rock album I bought), XTC - White Music (fell in love with this group from hearing a BBC session on the John Peel show and bought all their albums on release), Tori Amos - Little Eartquakes (one of the best singer songwriters there is), Iron Maiden - Iron Maiden (I started getting into metal as a genre seperate to rock around the time of this release), Madonna - Like a Virgin (nothing wrong with liking pop too, and this one is a classic), Nightwish - Once (I first heard Nightwish in May 2005 and within two months had all their back catalogue, my introduction to symphonic metal and dozens of artists in various branches of metal), Spocks Beard - The Light (whilst I had heard the name I had never listened to them and I saw this in a second hand shop cheap so thought I would give them a try - resulting in me getting the rest of their back catalogue as quick as I could). I could easily add another 20 to this list - I have been collecting for 50 years now and am still discovering new music.

The 1st album i bought was Elvis Presley;s greatest hits, then i got into synth pop and DARE by the human league, then in the mid 80's i got into rock, so Hysteria by def leppard was next, then the biggest one was next, heard PULL ME UNDER on the radio, so IMAGES AND WORDS was next and after SCENES FROM A MEMORY they became not only my favourite band but to this day, the ONLY band in the history of music that FOR ME are UNBELIEVABLY GREAT.

I think it's sometimes hard to realise how much of a bottom of the bill niche band that Genesis were back in 1971, when I first saw them, there were no special effects or costumes, they literally played in the clothes that they travelled in, Trespass was released but Nursery Cryme yet to come out, which only sold 10,000 WORLDWIDE and I think UK , Italy and Belgium made up 95% of those sales.They toured on the bottom of the bill with 2 others (Lindisfarne and Van Der Graaf) on the 6 bob tour or 30 pence, around 1 dollar. But you only had to hear Musical Box and that Clapped Out ex-King Crimson Mellotron for the very first time to be hooked...still am

Kansas: Song For America Supertramp: Crime Of The Century These two led me to the prog rock highway, still my two favorite artists ELO: A New World Record Al Stewart: Time Passages Al Stewart's songs about historical events was refreshing(he has a few prog adjacent songs), ELO is just, well, gorgeous music Jethro Tull: Aqualung. Hard rock with a flute?! Mercy. Led me to the rest of the catalog Billy Joel: The Stranger. Billy is simply a genius songwriter, and Prelude/The Angry Young Man(from the Turnstiles album) is prog Boston: Debut. Masterpice is an understatement Paul McCartney/Wings: Wings Over America. Still enjoy Sir Paul's work with Wings Genesis: Duke. continued on to the catalog Styx: The Grand Illusion. I enjoy Paradise Theater more, but, this brought me to Styx, who has some prog in the catalog King Crimson: Red. Came to appreciate KC later in life(about 20 years ago). Should have done so sooner. These artists led me away from the top 40/simple hard rock I was listening to in my early teens,thank goodness
