Right on Brendon. I do agree with you about certain albums especially “Calling all Stations” that album is really great. One of my favorite tracks is “the dividing line” which has a Phil-ish drum sound. My favorite track on that album is “One Man’s Fool” but then again they all are great songs. Back in 1976 it was always the “Banks/Rutherford” songs. It’s just a shame they didn’t give Ray Wilson a fair shot by recording one more album. But that’s the past now. I was so looking forward to seeing this version of Genesis live but they canceled the US dates back in 1997-98 whenever it was due to lack of ticket sales. End of rant now. In closing Calling all stations is a very good album indeed. I can never thank you enough when I bought “Fly on the Wall” on your recommendation. My 2nd album I really enjoy is “Flick of the Switch”

I’m a bit older than you and heavily lean toward the PROG artists more than the metal bands but I am always interested in hearing all music and giving it a chance. But the Drama mention made me write. I think you’re point that if you enter listening to a band at a later date you are much more open to accepting all of the catalog because you are not biased. Brendon, If you love Jefferson Starship / Modern Times, you really need the "bookend" albums, Freedom At Point Zero from '79 and Winds of Change from '82. They all have a similar feel and the secret weapon that really ties them together is guitarist Craig Chaquico - they really let him cut loose over these. I agree with you completely on Calling All Stations and Drama! I’d also add Union by Yes and Music From The Elder by Kiss to my list. But my top two choices would be Van Halen 3 by Van Halen and Music From Another Dimension by Aerosmith. I think what you said about coming to these albums later is completely true. I know for many people, VH3 did not meet expectations, but I’m only 26, so since I discovered it alongside all the other albums, I didn’t have those same expectations that were then let down. MFAD for me, though, is sort of the opposite. Aerosmith is my absolute favorite band, and MFAD is the only studio album of theirs that I got to experience as a new release. The hype built up for it, the singles coming out prior to release, the promotional internet videos, Steven promoting it on American Idol, and the eventual release all happened while I was in high school, so I have a LOT of nostalgia for that album! I was so excited to experience a new album from the band that I had been in love with since middle school! So it’ll always hold a special place in my heart!

I also agree Turbo gets more hate than it deserves. I think it's a good album. Still, rocks and the amount of keyboards in it are overstated by the critics of it. I also recently listened to and then Bought Chinese Democracy after ignoring it for years. Much better than expected. Hard to compare to the earlier stuff as it's just too different but as a stand-alone album it's good.

If your first albums had been Highway to Hell and Back in Black you would understand. The level there was so incredibly high, it could only get worse, and it did. Well, For those about to Rock almost kept the level of Back in Black, but Flick of the Switch marked clearly the end of the best era. When that album was out, you were hoping for the next to bring back that Back in Black quality, but then came Fly on the Wall and it was a catastrophy. You had to realise, that they will never reach that great sound, phantastic riffs and genius songwriting again. They were like just copying themselves on the level of bad imitators or even a satire.

The album was shunned at the time and the tour didn’t go over well. The band would break up because of this. But in later years the album has grown a cult following and is definitely looked upon in better light than it was when first released.
@mikereiss4216 Жыл бұрын
@@BrendonSnyder I think that was more in the UK than in the US though. From what I read the crowd in the UK were hostile towards Trevor Horn and didn't accept him as Jon's replacement even shouting "we want Jon." The album didn't do as well in general and was their first album to not go gold in the US. However, I still never heard of any hostility towards the band in the US and I have heard at least one person say that the Drama tour was the best concert he ever saw. I think at this point most Yes fans definitely accept it though. It's too bad that iteration of the band didn't do one more album. I think it was similar with that other prog band Genesis who broke up after CAS which also wasn't received well but not as bad as people make it out to be.

Dude. The AC/DC, the Genesis and the Yes albums you mentioned are all fantastic records, especially ‘Calling all Stations’ in 5.1 surround sound. The rest of the stuff on your list doesn’t do a dang thing for me. That’s cool though. We all hear things differently. You rock Brendon. Please keep up the good work and thanks for all you do. Peace!

Greetings, Brendon. Here is my top 10 (in no particular order): The Final Cut (Pink Floyd) Technical Ecstasy (Black Sabbath) In Through the Out Door (Led Zeppelin) Turn Back (Toto) Music from The Elder (Kiss) Wings at the Speed of Sound (Wings) Unusual Heat (Foreigner) Vinyl Confessions (Kansas) Difficult to Cure (Rainbow) Astra (Asia) And finally, as 'bonus tracks', practically everything Grand Funk Railroad put out and was dismissed by snob rock critics.

I'm with you on Genesis' Calling All Stations. Genesis is my favorite group of all time. It was more a return to their proggy stuff. Ray Wilson's voice had a Gabriel like tone. Imo, it was their best overall album since Duke in 1980. Genesis fans who like And Then There Were Three and Duke I would think would enjoy CAS, because the album musically is heavily dominated by Banks and Rutherford. My fav tracks on CAS are The Dividing Line, There Must Be Some Other Way, and Uncertain Weather in addition to the title track. The last track One Man's Fool is also very good, a Banks tune in the vein of Burning Rope, Home by the Sea, Domino and Fading Lights. I had tickets to see that CAS tour in 1998 and I was crushed that they canceled the entire US tour. Thus, I never got to see and hear this music played live, which is a shame. The problem with CAS is that the more casual Genesis fans who came to the band via Phil Collins in the 80s literally hopped off the bandwagon when they heard Phil was not there. Combine that with the "Gabriel only" Genesis crowd who stubbornly turned in their Genesis credentials when Gabriel went solo after the 75 Lamb Tour also didn't bother exploring this album either. I am an "all eras" Genesis fan, so I never got that kind of narrowness. The 2nd album I'm with you on is the Yes Drama album, since Yes was probably my 2nd favorite group in the 70s. I was a huge fan of the classic 5 lineup with Wakeman, I had seen them live in 78 and 79. I loved Going for the One. I didn't know what to think when I heard Wakeman and Anderson had left. I didn't know anything about Horn and Downes at the time, or even heard of The Buggles. But I went to see them live again, 3rd year in a row. The concert was better than I expected and I liked the new Drama songs. The album had a punchier more edgy sound, and while I missed Anderson and Wakeman, I think Drama has held up better than the next one, the mega seller 90125. I was actually more disappointed with that one despite JA return. So I skipped the 90125 tour. Now, to be clear Drama is not up there with Going for the One and the preceding albums back thru The Yes Album, but it was a worthwhile and interesting step into the 80s.

My personal list of sneered at albums that I absolutely love, in no particular order: Motley Crue - Girls, Girls, Girls Queensryche - Promised Land Motorhead - Orgasmatron Heart - Heart (1985) AC/DC - Flick of the Switch Yes - Union Judas Priest - Jugulator Journey - Raised On Radio Rush - Presto Deep Purple - The House of Blue Light
@BrendonSnyder Жыл бұрын
Yes Union is an excellent album and I think would be thought of as a better album if the band didn’t hate it as much. I think they were forced into it and so it doesn’t sit well with them. But I love it all the same. For me the better Judas Priest Ripper era album is the Jugulator follow-up, Demolition. That one sounded like the band found it’s footing with Ripper and wasn’t just a clone of Painkiller.

Always liked Calling for Stations. It's quite dark! Love Chinese Democracy as well. Pretty much the only GNR album I listen to regularly since the rest is so overplayed at this point. Has some of Axl's best vocal performances too. Another dark horse pick for me, Rush's Test for Echo. First Rush album I ever heard in its entirety because I had the Neil Peart drum DVD, so holds a special place for me.
@BrendonSnyder Жыл бұрын
Test For Echo is a good album but for some reason sounds like the band was just going through the motions. It’s part of the 90’s era kicked off by the outstanding Roll The Bones, followed by the more than capable Counterparts, but Test For Echo seemed like Rush Lite. Still a good listen but not as good as others.

Love Is For Suckers is great, so is Dynasty and Fly On the Wall! Some of mine would be Load/Reload - Metallica Revolutions Per Minute - Skid Row Just Push Play - Aerosmith Animalize - KISS Blow Up Your Video - AC/DC Point of Entry - Judas Priest Beatles For Sale - The Beatles In Through the Out Door - Led Zeppelin Euphoria - Def Leppard Ratt - Ratt

I don’t care for this album but the title track is terrific. I am not a big fan of Hooks In You (Iron Maiden almost doing glam metal which is why you like it Brendon 😂) but I do like Run Silent, Run Deep. In other places Tailgunner is an uninspired remake of Aces High. Bring Your Daughter was originally Bruce’s solo song and used when they ran out of songs.

Cool YES shirt. 'Fly On The Wall' was my introduction to AC/DC via 'Sink The Pink' videoclip. Love 'Fly On The Wall'. I also love TWISTED SISTER's 'Love Is For Suckers'. KISS's 'Dynasty' and 'Unmasked' are excellent studio albums; 'Crazy Nights' is my favourite studio album by KISS. Also huge fan of JUDAS PRIEST's 'Turbo'; however, 'Defenders Of The Faith' is my favourite studio album by the mighty JUDAS PRIEST. I'm also a big fan of VAN HALEN's 'Diver Down'. I'm also a fan of Jefferson Starship's Modern Times! Looks like the CD was only ever released in Japan in 1991, 1998 & 2008. Hopefully a reissue here some time soon. I still have my LP, but I also burned a disc and printed out artwork to have it in my CD collection.
@maxslamer Жыл бұрын
I'm not a fan of twofers but the only CD version of "Modern Times" I own is coupled with "Nuclear Furniture" (Friday Music, US 2009). That twofer is a bit odd, considering "Winds of Change" was released 1982, between the two albums mentioned (released 1981 and 1984 respectively). Even more odd is the twofer released by Edsel, UK in 2008 with "Modern Times" coupled with the 1976 album "Spitfire". So I agree, I would welcome good reissues of "Modern Times" (and the other albums).

"Dynasty" was my introduction into the world of Kiss and i love it from the beginning. That is how amazing journey with hard rock music started, at all. Then Judas came. After still my favorite "Defenders", two studio albums later they still kicked ass with "Turbo". And "Fly on the wall" is better if you chose this full long video featured flying bug and dancing waitress as a companion to the AC/DC songs from that album.

As a long time Queensryche fan I wish I could join you in liking "Dedicated to Chaos", but... no. It's just a horrible album. Opening track (and your favorite) Get Started is a listenable poprock song, but that's about it for me. 🙂 I do, however, absolutely adore Promised Land. I even rank it as my second favorite Queensryche album, only beaten by the majestic Op: Mindcrime. Not sure if Promised Land is actually "hated", but I sure haven't heard many fans speak fondly of it. It's always considered "too dark", "too slow" or "too depressing". I just love it. 😄

KZbin recommendations are working! Great video. My first ever gig, in December 1980, at the Rainbow in London, was Yes on the Drama tour. I was 15 at the time. I think I would have appreciated that type of gig better if I was a little older. Looking back, the setlist was great. Still, a very good album and the gig was good. AC/DC's Fly On The Wall is an album I like too, full of good songs but the mix of the album is just awful. The tour was great. "Playing with girls" is the standout track for me.

Great topic! I'll have to seriously think about this one. Love all of my 80's metal. First thing that comes to mind are Tommy Lee's first two solo albums. Music you need to be in a certain mood to listen to, but nice to have on in the background. Need to check the shelves again. Some great ones in the comments. Megadeth's Risk, Priest's Turbo, as well as Ripper's two Priest albums. Brendon, you could also do the opposite. Albums that people love but you can't stand lol.

Drama - is a top 3 Yes record for me and glad to see more people coming around to it. Dynasty- Top to bottom is as consistent as any Kiss album and it’s one of my favorites. The production I think is fantastic on it and much better than Love Gun and Rock and Roll Over. Turbo - Kind of like Dynasty in how I find it so consistently great and I love the sequencing of the album and the production. My dad had the VHS of Priest Live and I wore it out growing up so Turbo is a special Priest album to me. Fly on the Wall - I love the raw production of it and it just kicks ass start to finish.
