Ten basic exercises of Muay Thai Chaiya. When training Muay Chaiya, we start training by doing a standard set of exercises that help us stay in condition and teach us the technique and balance required to execute an array of Muay Thai Chaiya techniques.

Thanks a bunch Nathan! I'm planning to come and train at Baan Chang Thai, unfortunately it'll be a year or so before I'll be able to make the trip. Your videos here will give me the basics to practice so I'll be a little more prepared for the real thing, and something to chew on to take the edge off the longing! Thanks so much!

watching this made me realize that when a Thai fighter is does their traditional dance before a match, its not just for show/tradition/focus but youre getting in an extra stretch and warm up, sneaky sneaky!

Thanks for the great responses everyone :) Remember, these exercises are the building blocks of a larger system. Apart from helping with balance, stamina and cardio, they also give you the chance to practice the fundamental movements of Muay Chaiya. In my opinion #9 is the most important to the style, even though it seems to be one of the least strenuous. awsome beggining for someone doing muay thai, or anyone advanced, will work all the basic physical requirements... all the haters are dumb... thanks for vid man, i will ad it to my pre-bag warmup.

nice, lots of help. but when i train ban mud, pan kaen and pan mud, i do them as deep squats and do 100 of each. makes ur legs so much stronger, helps balance and is much more rewarding workout than just bobing up and down. no critism intended :)

@PhillyPugilist It is not just to develop the calves but a great tool for warmning up the body before any formal instruction or training begins. The jumping on tyres is to also reduce the impact of the ankle , keen and toe joints upon contact with the earth. The tyres reduce and lowers the risk of damaging the knees and ankles.

Good question, I'll try and keep the answer short. Muay Chaiya is one of the many old styles of Muay Thai (similar to Kung Fu having many styles) Muay Boran is an umbrella term they made for the old styles to distinguish the new modern sport style from them. The key difference between Muay Chaiya (to use it as an example of one of the old styles) and ring style is that the ring style is design for the ring format (with rules, referee, points etc) where Muay Chaiya has no rules - a street style.

Hey, on all of the exercises, the arm that's moving up should pass on the inside. So, if you are in right guard (right arm on top) changing to left guard, the left arm will rise up on the inside (closer to your face) of you right arm (which should be dropping). Does that make sense?

Umm... sometimes my heel touches, but I don't actually put weight down on it. The main point to this is that a) you want to use the full movement of the ankle (strengthens and stabilises) b) you don't want full impact on the heel, causing trauma to your ankle and knee joints. Jumping from the heel looks very different, try it!

btw im a 14 yr old boy and im planning to learn muay thai this summer in this april and i was doing the exercises that is shown in ur video and im asking myself and want to ask this to u.. Wut is the benefits of doing this?is it like the benefit of waxing on and off,is it like putting ur jacket on and off and on the ground i jsut want to know wut the exercises teach the viewers the doing them, Im not insulting u im just asking :)

Hi is this style more flat footed style and not on the balls of the feet? I’ve heard a lot of people saying being more heavy on your feet for this stance(chaiya)

Low level is on the flat, high level is all on the ball. As you progress in skill, so does your application and execution of techniques. Those people saying that about Chaiya will probably have little or no real experience in it 😉

I’m talking about the side stance or regular fight stance. Is it on the ball of the feet?

The front stance you see in the exercises, is only done during exercises... The rest of the time, you're in fighting stance, which is meant to be on the balls of your feet. When learning (from basic to advanced) how you apply this varies, but the end goal is to always be on the balls of your feet. This can also be applied during the exercises, but you will find this very difficult on the Yok Khao techniques

Muay Thai Chaiya is different in Muay thai that you see in the ring if you watch Human Weapons Muay thai chaiya is the old art of muay thai so it's deadly to try this on streets

how long do i have to practice the exercises?

A basic set includes each exercise for 3 minutes. Once you can do that, work on doing things faster, kicking and jumping higher - you should continue to find them challenging for a while! Another addition is to hold onto small weights - you will notice the difference for sure. How long do you have to practice? It depends on what you want out of them. People who train Muay Chaiya continue to use these exercises throughout their learning because they help to condition the body (most importantly joints) so that you can exercise the full range of techniques in the style.

Muay thai a.k.a thaibox is sport and muay chaiya is martial art. Chaiya has different techniques, stance, fighting style, etc.

My kru (instructor) in muaythai, muay boran, muay chai once said " IF YOU ARE A MUAY CHAI CAN BOTH KNOW MUAYTHAI AND MUAY CHAI BUT A MUAYTHAI FIGHTER DOESNT KNOW THE MOVEZ OF MUAY CHAI". It is used by Thai army . Muay chai use also a double long sword and many more weapon

@MoonCross10 easy to master? erm really it isnt if you are training properly! mastering body weight transference, balance, conditioning (esp. the forearms) etc. all are quite difficult and take a long to get perfect.

You sound like a true bullshitter yourself. What I have learned (and teach) in my 10 years here is NOTHING LIKE muay thai. Kru Lek has actually made two VCDs, but only limited edition and hard to get outside of Thailand.
