They are mainly a reflection of "heights" , ie. pressure.

At 4.30pm 8miles north east of Barnstaple. Bratton Fleming. I cycle up to 1027ft then it was snowing tonight. Bit white on ground not much. When I cycled down. Freezing rain then rain. In a space of 8miles and 35mins cycle.

Today’s low was meant to hit the south and central England and not further north. The low on Wednesday could push further north and give decent snow accumulations in Kent , Essex etc

Confidence levels are very low long-term at the minute. The latest GFS trends say prolonged cold (anomalies a couple of degrees below average every day) and ECMWF predict either average or slightly above average temperatures beyond the 10th-11th Jan. Only KMA are saying persistent mild at periods, where temperatures could reach 13C-14C for a couple of days, but no global or regional models have any certified cold or mild snaps. All we know is that there’s a transient period of mild southwesterly in parts of England and Wales for 36 hours starting from tomorrow to the 6th Jan, and that everyday beyond that until the 10th Jan is going to be very cold.
